HA HA!
Well, Im most likely the only Tigers fan on this board, but Im going to update a thread anyway. Maybe general baseball fans will be interested and read it. Maybe casual fans will browse it and learn a little bit about another team. Maybe you west coast NL fans will get some info about a lesser known AL team.
Maybe Detroit will make a wild card run, or be part of a divisional race. Either way, the Tigers keep me occupied in the summer. They are a love of mine, and updating them and following them should be fun for me. Maybe others will join in eventually! _________________ I Offered My Honor

So the Tigers are in the news a bit for once.
1. 5-0 start. Impressive and exciting, but its only 5 games. Im just glad to seet eh club get some recognition and come out hot after a great spring. They are crushing the ball (17 HR's) and its been fun to watch!
2. Chris Shelton.
This guy has came out on FIRE!!! I mean, his start is unprecedented. No one has ever started this hot in the history of the majors. I mean guys go on hot streaks, but we are talking 5 games now and the kid is hitting over .700!!!!
14-20 (.700), 5 HR (leads majors), 9 RBI (leads majors), 2 doubles and 2 triples.
The man is getting it done. Great to see! What a performance over 5 games. True baseball enthusiasts will certainly appreciate what kind of showing this is. _________________ I Offered My Honor

It occurs to me that most of you wont even be familair with most Tigers players, but with a little introduction you might see that they do have some talent.
Lets meet the pitching staff:
Kenny Rogers
Everybody remembers him from the imfamous cameraman attack last season. A hot head no doubt. I was a little upset the Tigers paid him so much ($8 million) at his age (41), but hes looked good so far. His first start was a success. A solid veteran lefty with good control. Not going to bowl anyone over, likes to keep his pitches arounf 80-85 mph and grind them out with methodical location and situational education. He should be good for 15 wins and a decent ERA.
1-0 with a 1.5 ERA - 6 IP - 3 hits
Jeremy Bonderman
Most people became familiar with him last season as he was right near the top of the AL in wins going into the All-Star break. Unfortunately innuries prevented him from reaching 20 wins.
Great fast ball around 98, Ive seen it hit 100 on the gun before, though he doesnt throw that kind of heat often, he has more control in the 95mph range. Hes only 24 and he's got loads of potential. Decent slider. Although Kenny Rogers is pitchign in the 1 slot, Bondo is the real ace of the staff. If healthy I expect at least 20 wins.
1-0 with a 1.35 ERA - 6.2 IP - 3 hits
Mike Maroth
A decent relatively young (27) left hander. The key for Maroth is that he is a lefty with 4 pitches and hes improved every year in a Tigers uniform. Great middle of the line-up starter. Not many lefties out there with 4 pitches (4 seamer, 2 seamer, curve, change) that they can throw well. Maroth is a nice change from some of the Tigers overpowering hard throwing studs. Id love 12-15 wins out of him.
Nate Robertson
Another lefty with a fastball. Nate is a hothead with a fastball in the 90's. The FB is decent but his real bread and butter is the slider. This guy sits down righties with regularity. If only he was more consistent. Nate really is a streaky pitcher. He can give you 5 good innings but completely fall apart in the 6th. Its not really breaking down, he just loses control. If he could reamin calm, he could probably move up in the rotation. A decent starter however based on his killer slider alone being lefthanded.
And now for the young studs...
Justin Verlander
Now this kid has potential. If you havent heard his name before...you'll soon know it. This kid throws with heat, High 90's and is a K machine. Another youngin (24) and hopefully the future stud of the pitching rotation for years to come. I havent seen the Tigers this high on a prospect in quite some time.
Joel Zumaya
Another young gunner (25) with an arm out of hell. He can throw 101 mph and locate it. Has improved over the past 2 seasons with Triple A and was finally given a chance to play last season. Made the opening day roster this season and came in and gave a great performance under pressure in the opener. I expect great thins out of him. DAYAM this kid can sling it. _________________ I Offered My Honor

I predict he won't be updating this thread in about a month. But not here to spread hate, so enjoy it while it lasts. Wish my team was 5 - 0. _________________

Im been excited all summer. And a 5-0 start only adds to that. Like Ive said 1000 times, I have the first week in perspective. I know no division titles are won in April.
However Ive said all season that I expect the Tigers to compete for the division. Had they started 3-2 Id be just as confident.
I like this team, I respect the Sox (although I despise their announcers "You can put it on the Booooooarrdddd") and skipper. Cleveland has a great team as well. But I think the tigers have the best offensive line-up in the Central and a solid pitching staff. I really think that they play over .500 baseball, and if they remain healthy, they could be in the division race. _________________ I Offered My Honor

Ill update this thread is they lose 100 games, if nothing else for my pure enjoyment. Like I said, i love baseball and I love the tigers.
The Tigs lost 119 games 3 years ago. But I watched about 90% of their games, and went to about 20 games in person. I support this team through anything, and its good to finally have a shred of hope.
Things are finally looking up in Tigernation, and Im glad. Not all the hate in the world is going to affect that.

Well it couldt go on forever.
Im still excited that they started out this well on the road. 5-1 is beyond what any realistic fan could have hoped for.
So the key to having a winning season is to keep winning series. They swept KC in a mini series and took the Texas series 3-1.
Now they go home. Heading into the home opener with a 5-1 cushion is damn sweet. We got the Whits Sox and the Indians coming to town. Should be fun. Id love to take 2 of 3 against a struggling White Sox club. Just take things one series at a time..... _________________ I Offered My Honor

Can someone learn to pitch around SHelton? The dude is scorching.
On another note...go Magz. Got him on all 3 of my fantasy teams. Comeback player of the year candidate. |

Shelton became the first player in Comerica Park's 491-game history to homer in a 1-0 game. Detroit hadn't been involved in a game like that since Aug. 30, 1999, when Gabe Kapler homered in a 1-0 win over the Rangers at Tiger Stadium _________________

I decided to abandon this thread because of all the initial negativity it received.
I will say that Ive enjoyed watching (or listening, Thanks FSN who never shows a damn game) to every game so far.
Swept by the White Sox sucked. But now weve taken 2 of 3 from the tribe and were back in first for the time being.
Shelton is a friggin animal!!!!! Fastest to 8 homers in the history of the MLB. Fastest to 50 bases in the history of the MLB. Hitting .480 through 50 at bats is just plain sick. 8 homers and 16 RBI's is incredible for April, and its only half over.
Tigers still have the best defense in the AL only comitting 1 error (thanks Inge) so far. Great start for 12 games. Keep it going!!!! _________________ I Offered My Honor

Shelton's on the juice. But in all seriousness the Indians look too strong and I think the best chance for the Tigers is the AL wild card. Its unfortunate b/c they are probably in one of the strongest divions in the AL. |

With the Yankee thread. I'm just going to post on a monday about the previous week.
Simple and effective...you could do the same. It will be nice to look back on it in the summer/fall. _________________

Yeah, the division is no doubt a tough one. I still dont believe in the WhiteSox over 162 games. I think they will break down like last year, but without a huge lead they'll be in trouble. If the Tigers woulda pitched around Thome, they probably would have split that series.
Cleveland is damn good. They are my pick to win the division.
I do think they can compete for the division however. It will take staying healthy. I think they have the most potent offense in the division. I really dont think they can compete for the Wild Card though as I expect NY and BOS are both going to have great seasons. _________________ I Offered My Honor

Its been a while, but its time to update this thread.
Besides a setback last night against Anaheim, the Tigers have been playing great. The unamious surprise out of the AL.
Sitting at 19-10, they are 1.5 games back of the WhiteSox in the Central, and leading the AL WildCard by 3 games (Boston).
They really have been playing great. Great pitching, great defense, and the offense continues to roll. The Tigers lead the majors in HR's(44), ERA, and opponents batting average.
Since I last updated....
@ OAK - L 3-4
@ OAK - W 11-4
@ OAK - W 4-3
@ SEA - W 2-1
@ SEA - W 2-0
@ SEA - W 6-4
@ LAA - L 0-3
@ LAA - W 5-2
@ LAA - L 0-4
vs MIN - W 9-0
vs MIN - W 18-1
vs MIN - W 6-0
vs KC - W 3-2
vs KC - W 4-1
vs LAA - W 2-1
vs LAA - L 2-7

24-13
*** Most wins in the Majors!!!!! ***
The Tigers continue to surprise everyone, except me.
@ MIN - W 9-6
@ MIN - L 6-7 (blew lead in 9th)
@ MIN - L 2-4 (blew lead in 8th)
@ BAL - L 6-7
@ BAL - W 6-3
@ BAL - PPD
@ CLE - W 5-4
@ CLE - W 3-0
@ CLE - W 3-2
They sweep the Indians at Jacobs field for the first time ever, and they are red hot. Continued excellent pitching (Best ERA and opponents batting average in the MLB) as well as leading the majors in HR's (59). No major injuries yet!
Hopefully they keep it rolling with 16 of the next 20 at home. _________________ I Offered My Honor

Thanks Realm. Do you have any idea how long its been since Ive been able to say 1/4 of the way through the season that the Tigers have the best record (or most wins at least) in all of baseball!?!?!?!?
For once, heading into June, the Tigers are actually looking like a contender.
All hail Jim Leyland and the pitching staff.
Kenny Rogers - The Gambler
Jeremy Bonderman - The real Ace
Mike Maroth - Maybe the best lefty in the majors so far this season
Nate Robertson - The lefty firecracker
Justin Verlander - the young protege
Zumaya - he throws 100
Todd Jones - shuts them down
Rodney - gets people out, period _________________ I Offered My Honor
