A request ... or at least something to think about

I had mentioned this in one of the "new rules" threads in Open Court, but wanted to present an official request here.

Can a "Religion/Politics" forum please be created?

These two topics can inspire some very passionate responses. With the presidential election still 10 months away, the amount of political threads is bound to increase. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it does have the potential of overtaking Open Court and driving away traffic. Myself included.

When I'm in Open Court, I want to chat with my fellow CLers. New movies, what kind of TV to buy, Britney Spears' latest idiocy, that kind of thing. Sorry, but I don't want to be bombarded with propaganda that America is a terrorist country, our soldiers are women / baby killers, our president is evil, my religion is a cult and I'm stupid because I'm a Christian.

Many other forums do this and have success with it. A separate Religion/Politics forum with a couple of brave mods would help allow those who want to participate in those discussions more freedom to do so and allow those who don't to stay out of it.

I always thought the OC was a place for all non sports related topics. I like the wide variety.

My opinion doesn't matter much since I hardly participate in those threads since I'm not knowledgeable enough, but either way, I'm NOT for change when everything seems fine by most to begin with.

I think Open Court is fine the way it is, there are some (or maybe just one) member(s) complaing about the more light hearted topics but you can't please everyone.

I understand your concern 100%.

However, after discussing it with the staff, it's probably best to not create a separate forum ...

a) It would be a headache to moderate ... and I'd rather focus on LD right now.
b) The personal attacks / baiting that go on in these threads would just migrate to the other forum, resolving little to nothing.

However, we're still looking into creative ways to resolve this, as it seems personal attacks are far too common in these threads.

Last thing we want to do is ban all politics/religion discussions, but it's not out of the question.

I personally think there should be a single topic, stickied, where people can discuss this stuff ALL they want WITHOUT the fear of it being lock, them being banned, and so forth.
