WHAT IF Kobe would have scored 101

I donīt want to even think about it because I canīt think about it. Its flat out insane.

BTW Kobeīs dunk was "a little disappointing". I hoped he goes for a windmill. Not that I want to find something negative but at that point (the energy of the crowd was really high) he would have send Staples to heaven with a windmill. damn

if he scored 101, I'm 100% sure that it would take clublakers.com forever to load in 2 weeks. man1

Spontanious human combustion releated deaths would occur all over the world... especially in LA,and miami man10

Wow, I'm watching the replay and just realized something.

In the 4th quarter, Kobe scored 20 points in a span of under 6 minutes (that's half a quarter, y'all).

At 6:01 to go he had 61 points ... finished with 81 at around 43 seconds remaining. man4

I'm not gonna front...I'm gonna woMAN up for my fellow Lakers fans...I was SO CLOSE to turning the game off at the third quarter. LIke, mintutes away from turning it off. Looking back, I can't believe I was so close to losing my Lakers Fan Card.

I was paying attention to something else, listening to Stu & Bill in the background, hearing Stu say tha they were down more than when the went into the half, and I just got fed up (I had watched the first half).

I said to my man "You can go ahead and change the channel if you'd like, cause I don't want to watch the Lakers play crummy while playing an already crummy team".

To which he replied, like he's talking to a 10 year old..."There's still plenty of time, Kobe will go off soon...geez what kind of a fan are you, just bailing out on them when they aren't playing well?"

(He asks this knowing full well I'm a die hard fan who watches almost every game, even when they're getting routed, and I routinely talk smack on fair weathered Lakers fans, so it was in jest)

And it was just a few mintues after that when Kobe really started taking off. Thank goodness my man snapped me out of it just in time.

So, we both are watching history, just amazed that he's reaching 70, and throughout the 4th he keeps saying "And you wanted to turn the game off..."

I could only hear one thing in my head...Cooper from the movie EuroTrip...

FOR SHAME!!!

So yeah, much like the Kobe Haters having to agree with Kobe's brilliant performance last night, I must recognize my near fatal error in judgement last night...never underestimate what Kobe Bryant is capable of achieving single handedly in 1 game...historical greatness.

Other things I really liked about last night...

1) Kobe giving Phil (and just about every teammate) a hug as he takes the bench. Kobe and Phil hug on the court!! At the 62 point game, it was a big high five handshake, but this one with the hug was even more special.

2) Then later, Kobe says in his Press Conf. that he plays to please Phil. I'm not buying into that 100%, but for 50% it got a big "AWWW" outta me. I've really enjoyed seeing their relationship develop into an entirely different level than before.

3)The majority of the crowd (including the lower bowl with all the upper crusts people) staying long after the game's ended to hear Kobe's interview and keep up the celebration. I haven't seen this since the Lakers won a championship! If you've been to a game at Staples, you appreciate the need for leaving a few minutes early to beat the traffic. I know Lakers fans get ragged on quite a bit and the dedication is questioned, and to see how much Staples Center was rockin last night, and to see how many fans stuck around long after the game was done, shows you how much Kobe's performance has impacted our Lakers fans.

4) Kobe wrapping up the press conference as soon as Natalia said she wanted to go home for her bath. It was just too adorable, I had to throw that little moment in as well.

Don't tell me! You're a Raptor's fan who came on this board to pretend to be a Laker fan just so you could put Kobe down, right? Well get lost.

In the desperately-need-to-buy-a-clue land you live in, I suppose it would have been better for the team to lose by 30 so long as everyone got to take more shots (seeing as we were down by 18 in the 3rd quarter doing just that), versus our having to suffer through the single most amazing dominant performance in a game we've ever been privileged to see, huh?

What ignorance your post demonstrates - and sad that you can't even fathom what we all just witnessed. Honestly, you have no business be a fan of basketball, let alone a Laker fan, if you can't appreciate something you may never see again. In the modern era of basketball, that was worthy of a legend.

I hope everyone realized what they witnessed, saw highlights of, heard about, or read about last night through today and are still seeing/hearing/reading about the buzz. The history text books are being updated as we speak, because one man did the unthinkable. By swishing a ball through a net more times than anyone imagined, Kobe Bryant has done something that no other living soul can boast about...and that is scoring 80+ points in a NBA game.

The only other person that has achieved such a feat was the late, great Wilt "The Stilt." People thought that no one would ever come close to that record, well Kobe was only 19 away. The majority of the population did not think any player in today's game could break MJ's career high of 69, boy were they wrong. Kobe broke it and did so in fashioin, by shooting a high percentage from the field and making the game look easy...too easy.

If you have not gotten the chance to see this fine piece of history, like myself, then do yourself a favor, one that you will not regret. Buy the game. Order it off the internet. This is something that you will cherish for the rest of your life. This is something that you will take pride in sharing with your kids and watching with them. Watching the look on their face as they watch one of the greatest of all time tear apart the Raptors by himself.

Not naming names....but I've noticed alot of our resident closet anti-snitch-devilers are awfully quiet tonight.... man12 man12

theyve been quiet for weeks. Kobe is averaging 50 for the month and were winning. Its not much fun to eb on this forum when their number 1 priority is to hate on a player, not be a fan of this team.

Here is to hoping they stay away for a long time.

You guys know who you are.
When we're not averaging 40 posts a board on 3 sites I guess that is staying away. I'm not going to turn into a Kobe lover, hell why should I? I'm not a bandwagon Kobe hater. I'm a consistent hater, nothing he does phases my hate. Thats what I like it, and clearly you miss us enough to acknowledge us and our "staying away".

Its had a little more time to settle in......

81 points. All by one player in a competitive game. 81 points. Kobe has done 1000 things that have left my mouth agape, but never anything like this. 81 points. We were down 20 at one point, and Kobe singlehandedly won the game for us, no question. 81 points.

You could take every player to every lace 'em up in the history of the NBA. Jerry West, Magic, Michael, Elgin, Dr. J, Larry Bird, Kareem, Chucky Atkins....take the whole lot of 'em, living and dead. Take them all to a basketball court and have them all take a seat on the hardwood.

Youve now got every player to play professional basketball sitting on a court in front of you. You ask all the players who have won a championship ring to stand up.

Youll get quite a few.

Everyone sitting again....then you ask every player who has ever hit game winning shot in the playoffs to stand up.

Youll get some guys, but the numbers will be smaller.

Then ask the guys who have ever won a scoring title to get on their feet.

The group is smaller

Players who have won an NBA MVP award?

Elite

Anyone who ever scored 60?

A handful

Then ask all the players who have ever scored 80 in a single game to stand up.

Two men rise to their feet. Wilt, then Kobe...

wow

Just watching the game and experiencing that was amazing. As Kobe scored more and more in the 2nd half you started to wonder just how high he could go. The announcer was calling out names after each bucket...

Kobe with a turnound J..............bye bye career high

Kobe with another free throw.........cya Shaq

Kobe with a 3!!...............eat my dust Jordan

Kobe with another jumoer..............peace out D-Rob

And another..........see you later Elgin Baylor

Its as if Kobe was just running through an NBA house of legends and knocking over pillar after pillar.

What a game, what a player!

Here's what George Eddy (Commentator, Canal + France) said about Kobe's performance in his NBA.com blog

Quote:
Bravo, Kobe, Bravo!

We love high-scoring, high-performance hoops
TOTAL RESPECT!

I just finished watching Kobe's colossal 81-point performance: Wow! It was the "perfect storm," in a game where L.A. trailed by 18 in the first quarter and 14 at the half, so Kobe's points were meaningful and the situation perfect for a Sunday night, Jan. 22 that will live in history!

Kobe was a "rubber band man," an aerial and un-real contortionist! As someone who has often criticized Kobe's poor shot selection in the past, I feel very at ease in saying that this time it's impossible to nit-pick! That's 81p oints on 46 shots in 42 minutes shooting 61 percent (52 percent on threes!) and 90 percent from the free throw line for the most intense competitor since Michael?

This was beyond "Jordanesque!"

Since his suspension, Bryant has been "Chamberlainesque," averaging 45.5 in his last 10 games with a better than Wilt -- like 62 free throws in a row!

Remember it took Wilt three overtimes vs. the Lakers in '61 to score 78! Thank goodness Phil didn't take him out when he had 77!

Behold once again the power of the Blog Squad!

(OK maybe Bill Russell did have more to do with Shaq and Kobe patching things up than us...)

This time, as we suggested, Kobe stayed in the game to the end, even after the victory was assured and his teammates rightfully fed him the ball so he could make history! All those who saw the game live feel like they've witnessed something unique. And it was definitely not a case of disrespecting the opponent!

Toronto was in the game four-fifths of the way and tried multiple defences and defenders on the "uncatchable one!"

What a night for the NBA where two run-first defensive teams qualify for the Super Bowl and have to take a back seat to Kobe! And Seattle and Phoenix combined for the first 300 point game since 1995 while breaking the record for combined threes with 32!

Nothing but fireworks and it's three weeks after New Years Day! The new "hands-off rules" on defence are proving their value, (sorry to repeat myself but that was another thing on the Blog Squad lobbying list!), even if Larry Brown and Pat Riley disagree.

Long live high-scoring, high-percentage, spectacular basketball games like Kobe's "perfect storm!"

Here's what another NBA.com blogger had to say, Victor Williams (Actor, King of Queens).

Quote:
If I Could Be Like Wilt

Sunday January 22nd, was such a great day of basketball. Ray Allen had 42 points and a buzzer beatin', game winnin' shot in Seattle's 152-149 (you heard me!) double overtime win against Phoenix. Allen Iverson had 39 and 9(assists) as Philly topped the Minnesota Timberwolves in yet another buzzer-beater game, courtesy of Andre Iguodala. What else? Mike Miller went for 30 as the Grizzlies beat the Wizards. Tracy McGrady's 43 points wasn't nearly enough to upset Detroit as the Houston Rockets lost 99 to 97. Dallas narrowly escaped Portland in overtime and older Shaq looked a lot like "Throwback Shaq" with 27 points and 6 rebounds against the Sacramento Kings. Oh, and Kobe scored 81 points today. What!!!!!!??????

Kobe Bryant has been compared to Michael Jordan ever since he took Brandy to his high school prom. But perhaps we've been making the wrong comparisons all along. This season, some of Kobe's point totals have been more reminiscent of Wilt Chamberlain. The "wow" factor surrounding Kobe, harks back to Pistol Pete Maravich. And now, the big question surrounding Laker nation is whether or not Kobe Bryant can catch Elgin Baylor's club record 19 games of scoring 50 points or more. He's almost halfway there. All of a sudden, the legend of Kobe has expanded beyond Michael. Kobe just scored the second most points in a game, in NBA history. Folks, Kobe just scored the most points in forty-four years!

Without question, every basketball fan will be keeping an eye on the Laker box scores for the rest of the season to see how many points Kobe drops on any given night. Heaven forbid he score a paltry 31 points against the Golden State Warriors this week! All of a sudden, it doesn't matter if the Lakers are going up against the Hawks or the Pistons. With all due respect to Phoenix, Detroit and San Antonio, the greatest basketball show on earth is once again in Los Angeles.

What I find most intriguing is how instantaneously Kobe raised the stakes for the rest of his career. The question of whether or not Kobe could win an NBA title without Shaquille O'Neal had already been posed. The question is now even greater than that. It is clear that Kobe believes he can shoot his way to another championship. Basketball gospel says that is not likely. We'll see which philosophy wins out in the end. Let another act in this Kobe drama begin!

Kobe has also committed to playing for USA Basketball in the 2008 Olympics. If he'd just stuck to being in the same stratosphere as Tracy McGrady, LeBron James and Dwayne Wade, then the burden to succeed in Beijing wouldn't necessarily fall entirely on Mister Bryant. But when when you decide to go out and score 81 of your team's 122 points in a game, less than a week after your announcement to play in the Olympics and a month after scoring 62 points in three quarters of a game, then the message is clear: KOBE MUST WIN GOLD!

Kobe Bryant's "to do" list just got bigger:

2006 Scoring Title.
Another NBA championship.
At least one MVP award.
Olympic Gold in 2008.
One of the greatest players ever.

No pressure Kobe. No pressure.

Too sit and watch Kobe's press conference and hear him talk about him turning it on and doing that lets me know that Kobe can do whatever the hell he wants. I don't mean trade Shaq or Lamar. I mean he can entirely take a whole team out by himself. Honestly. You put five guys on the court with one of them being Kobe Bryant, give him the green light and you wil get a show. I believe if the NBA shortened the season to about 40-50 games and I have heard suggested by many coaches that aren't professional, I think Kobe could do this EVERY SINGLE night. Now, I have Kobe as the second best player in NBA history. If he gets another championship, he might surpass the GOAT and everyone knows who I'm talking about. It depends on all of the circumstances though. But, I think that before Kobe Bryant retires he will be considered the greatest player in NBA history without a doubt. Jordan demands respect from everyone. Not many people hate Jordan, only die-hard fans of the teams he destroyed. I believe Kobe Bryant will be just the same once he retires. Not now of course because he scores fourty points a game and not everyone can like the same team, but Kobe Bean Bryant will be the greatest player to have ever played the game of basketball.

oh man, that was amazing. but what impressed me was the efficiency, his relentlessness and his humbleness afterwards.
this shows that he's getting closer and closer to mj. whether kobe likes it or not.

and i wasted three minutes during the 3rd quarter to do dishes. DISHES! DISHES ARE NOT AS IMPORTANT AS WITNESSING SOMEONE GO OFF COMPLETELY! man2

that's why i wana get paper plates and burn all my dishes.

Shavlik Randolph (76ers rookie) comments on Kobe's performance during a chat on NBA.com

Quote:
Chat Transcript

Chuckster: Given that in your debut against the Raptors you scored two points in just a single minute of playing time, setting a Chamberlainesque 96 point per 48 minute pace, do you think you can challenge Kobe for the NBA's game high this season?

Shavlik Randolph: Ha-ha (Laughing) Not right now. I just need to get on the court and stay on the court. I never thought anyone could get 81 points in the modern era. But, hey, you never know, all things are possible with God (Laughing).

Rose and Mitchell made further comments after tonight's game against the Nuggets. Mitchell didn't seem all that happy.
Quote:
Yahoo: Toronto faded midway in the fourth quarter even though Anthony was on the bench for much of it -- the kind of break some of the Raptors wished Bryant had taken the night before -- before trimming the lead in the final minutes.

Before tip-off, Rose said he hoped people will eventually forget it was the Raptors who were on the wrong side of history the night before.

"Don't get me wrong, it's nothing to celebrate, it's nothing you want to be on the butt end of the jokes about," Rose said. "But it's kind of like losing the Super Bowl or the championship. In 30, 40 years, when somebody breaks his record, you know, nobody's going to remember who it was against."

Toronto coach Sam Mitchell was in no mood to talk about Kobe.

"Are you asking me about tonight's game or yesterday's game?" he snapped.

About Kobe's 81, second only to Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point feat nearly 44 years ago.

"Talked about it early in the day and put it behind us," Mitchell said. "We talked about it. Some of the guys wanted to see it, so we watched it and put it behind us."

You know what I think is bad from a team standpoint, Dirk? Choking in the playoffs every year.
You're attacking like he said Kobe is too selfish and should have never shot that much. He said from a team (everyone contributes) standpoint its not good. He didn't say Kobe isn't a team player, they asked him about Kobes history DAY. Sheesh, cut the crap with the Dirk hate already.

I really have no idea what you were trying to say there. From a team standpoint its not good? Isn't that basically trying to minimize the accomplishment that just happened? Yes, they asked about Kobes history DAY, and he answered with an answer giving no respect to something he's never come even close to doing. That in my book is hate. If you disagree with that, fine. But don't tell me to "cut the crap" for voicing MY opinion please.

On the SCSR, Ralph Lawler and Mike Smith (Clippers' commentators) both agreed that Kobe's performance was more impressive than Wilt Chamberlain's 100 points.

Kobe's a bum!

He had to miss his free throws....didn't he!

So he decides to try and break another NBA record that wouldn't take as much time as the FT record....

And the bum falls short by 20 points! He ONLY scores 81. I'm disappointed in Kobe. freak2

BTW, nice avy Chief and even if I think Kobe's a bum, I still think that on his "good nights" he is a basketball god!

Kobe beats Kobe's record of 62 points in one game to 81 points in one game...becoming the second highest player to score that many points in one game...just 19 points from Wilt's record of 100 points...

Watch this...sometime in like February or March...he will beat Wilt's record and MVP will be his!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
