Bengals cut Henry, say they'll no longer tolerate his conduct
ESPN.com news services

Updated: April 3, 2008, 12:24 PM ET

The Cincinnati Bengals, deciding they have had enough of wide receiver Chris Henry's run-ins with the law, released him on Thursday, hours after he surrendered to police to face assault and criminal damaging charges.

Henry, 24, was being held in the Hamilton County jail, pending a court appearance Thursday, after being charged with misdemeanor assault and criminal damaging. He is accused of punching an 18-year-old man in the face and breaking a window in the man's car. A warrant for Henry's arrest was issued Wednesday and he surrendered, a police spokesman said.

"Chris Henry has forfeited his opportunity to pursue a career with the Bengals. His conduct can no longer be tolerated," Bengals president Mike Brown said in a statement.

Henry, arrested five times since December 2005, was suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the first half of last season for repeatedly violating the league's conduct policy.

"The Bengals tried for an extended period of time to support Chris and his potentially bright career. We had hoped to guide him toward an appropriate standard of personal responsibility that this community would support and that would allow him to play in the NFL," Brown said. "We acknowledge those fans who had concerns about Chris; at the same time we tried to help a young man.

"But those efforts end today, as we move on with what is best for our team."

Court records do not indicate if Henry has hired an attorney in the new case.

The player's agent, Marvin Frazier, said Henry gave him a different version of events but declined to elaborate.

"I was told it didn't happen that way," Frazier said.

According to an affidavit filed in Hamilton County, Henry was identified by Gregory Meyer, whose hometown was not listed, and an eyewitness. The eyewitness claimed Henry punched Meyer on Monday, causing "visible injury." Henry then threw a beer bottle at Meyer's car, breaking the rear passenger window, according to the affidavit.

Henry has had a string of problems with police. He most recently was in court last week after being ticketed for driving with expired Kentucky license plates. He paid $149, according to the Hamilton County Municipal Court records.

Henry also pleaded guilty to letting minors drink alcohol in a hotel room he had rented. He served two days in a northern Kentucky jail.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Thats a shame. There are teams that need a reciever like him. The Titans, Eagles, and Bills come to mind. But they have all had their issues with troubled players. What a waste of talent.

WR Chris Henry rejoins Bengals

AP - Aug 19, 3:37 pm EDT NFL Gallery CINCINNATI (AP)—With their two Pro Bowl receivers hurt, the Cincinnati Bengals brought back troubled receiver Chris Henry on Tuesday, a move that their coach had emphatically ruled out only a month earlier as inappropriate.

The signing helps the team but raises questions about its commitment to holding players accountable for their actions. Henry must serve a four-game suspension from the NFL—his third such punishment—before he can fully rejoin the team.

The move was stunning in light of coach Marvin Lewis’ statement shortly before training camp opened that the team had permanently parted ways with the receiver, who has been arrested five times since he joined the Bengals. Henry had indicated he was interested in rejoining Cincinnati.

“I’m not interested,” Lewis said at the team’s annual preseason luncheon on July 22. “I don’t think it would be productive for our football team. You have to be a productive part to be an NFL player, and there’s responsibilities to being an NFL player. It’s a privilege, it’s not a right. There’s a lot that comes with being an NFL football player.”

The Bengals evidently feel differently after Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson sprained his left shoulder during a 27-10 preseason loss to Detroit on Sunday night, leaving his status uncertain. Pro Bowl receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has missed both preseason games with a hamstring injury as well.

The Bengals released Henry after he was accused of punching a college student and breaking his car window with a beer bottle in March. Bengals president Mike Brown also cut ties with Henry, saying he could no longer be with the team.

“His conduct can no longer be tolerated,” Brown said at the time. “The Bengals tried for an extended period of time to support Chris and his potentially bright career. We had hoped to guide him toward an appropriate standard of personal responsibility that this community would support and that would allow him to play in the NFL. … But those efforts end today, as we move on with what is best for our team.”

Brown declined to be interviewed Tuesday about the signing. Henry did not participate in an evening practice. Johnson and Houshmandzadeh also missed practice to tend to their injuries.

Henry was suspended by the league for two games in 2006 and for the first eight games of last season for repeatedly violating its conduct policies. He received the this season’s suspension for the latest court case, which ended in a mistrial with the charges later dropped.

Henry took a physical Tuesday morning in Cincinnati and agreed to the contract.

“I’m just glad they’re willing to let the past be the past and give him a chance,” agent Marvin Frazier said. “I just hope that the Cincinnati fans will give him the same type of chance.”

The Bengals had 10 players arrested over a 14-month span, one of the factors that prompted commissioner Roger Goodell to toughen the league’s conduct policy. The Bengals then toughened their own stance, getting rid of troubled linebacker Odell Thurman and Henry in the offseason.

As a Steeler fan I can say that Chris Henry probably has more talent than Ocho Dinko and TJ Housyourmomma. His combination of size and speed is downright scary. However, he is pissing his gift away. It's fine by me cuz I hate the Bungles. But if Henry ever gets his head on straight look out.

I agree he's not nearly as predictable as the other two. From a business standpoint I understand why they brought him back but they shouldn't have said how they wanted high character guys on the team when they cut him a few months ago...

At least Jerry Jones is upfront of wanting guys with rap sheets on his team.

Jerry Jones and Al Davis are honest. They care about talent bottom line. Lots of teams including my Steelers fall under that moral/high character team. However, it's all BS. Bottomline is, if your good you'll be kept. If your a scrub and you make off the field "news" then you'll be made an example of to show how the franchise only wants high character players.
For example, my own Steelers had two guys that made off the field domestic abuse news. One a pro-bowl linebacker (James Harrison) the other a 3rd string wide-reciever (Cedric Wilson). Guess who's looking for a job?
Same goes for Chris Henry, if he sucked the Bungles wouldn't have brought him back cuz, they want high character players (yeah right). He's got tremendous talent but, no brain. As long as your not a scrub you'll have a job.
