Recap:
Round 1:
Round 1
1. Kobe Bryant Michlake(LG)
2. Kevin Garnett CL Porklips
3. Shawn Marion Caron1 LG
4. LeBron James PhilofLG
5. Dirk Nowitzki CritterofCL
6. Gilbert Arenas CL Mojo
7. Steve Nash Critical Bea...
8. Pau Gasol Luke LG
9. Amare Stoudemire crank dat ra...
10. Chris Bosh Slimjim@CL
First 6 picks are pretty much interchangeable with no big suprises here.
Personally, I like KG or Marion with the top 2 picks, especially since this is a TO league, but being that this is CL vs. LG Kobe at #1 shouldn't surprise anyone.
Lebron is a stud, but you have to think about teaming him with high %, high volume FT shooters to make up his big weakness. Same thing with Arenas and his FG%.
No big surprises this round. Bosh went a little higher than his ADP, but in a 2 center league, he's still a solid pick. Slimjim was probably worried about Yao's health when taking Bosh over Yao. |

I was going to mention that the best value of the round was your pick with Arenas (even though you hadn't even showed up at that point). That can be said for every draft in this format at pick 6 (insert name here). _________________

Round 2:
1. Yao Ming Slimjim@CL

3. Josh Smith Luke LG
4. Jason Kidd Critical Bea...
5. Tim Duncan CL Mojo
6. Chris Paul CritterofCL
7. Dwight Howard PhilofLG
8. Rashard Lewis Caron1 LG
9. Andre Iguodala CL Porklips
10. Carlos Boozer Michlake(LG)
I take back what I said about Slim and Yao Ming... Since Slim took him with the next pick.
2 of the 4 top centers in a 2 center league is nice.
Again, 2nd round didn't have any BIG surprises, but...
Wade going 12 overall is a big risk in a Roto league. You can get away with him missing a month or so in H2H, where you only need to make the playoffs to have a chance to win.
Critical Beatdown got Jason Kidd 2 picks later. Kidd is a roto monster and was a much better pick IMO.
My pick - Duncan. He is the last of the top tier centers and I felt lucky to be able to pair him with my #1 pick, Hibachi. Their strengths and weaknesses (FG/FT %) balance out and I think I have a well balanced start with all categories covered.
Worse pick - Dwight Howard. Don't get me wrong, Howard is a STUD. But his high TO's from the center spot (especially while giving you no assists) and horrible FT% will kill your team. He is the modern day fantasy Shaq. This wouldn't necessarily have been that bad of a pick, but paired with Phil's first round pick of Lebron, Phil has guaranteed that he will finish near the bottom in FT% and TO's. Never a good idea to punt categories in Roto.
I also really like the Rashard and AI2 picks late in the round. Rashard is a stud in Roto and AI2 is a multi cat monster who's actually still improving. |

I love having the 6th pick. Best value pick this year, since the top 6 are pretty much equal, and you get the best pick on the backward swing in the 2nd round. |

Round 3
1. Gerald Wallace Michlake(LG)
2. Tracy McGrady CL Porklips
3. Ray Allen Caron1 LG
4. Kevin Martin PhilofLG
5. Caron Butler CritterofCL
6. Deron Williams CL Mojo
7. Al Jefferson Critical Bea...
8. Vince Carter Luke LG
9. Marcus Camby crank dat ra...
10. Chauncey Billups Slimjim@CL
First surpise of the night in this round.
Kevin Martin was taken by Phil with the 4th pick of this round. This was surprising considering other bigger names like VC, Redd, Paul Pierce, Joe Johnson were still on the board. KMart2 is a nice roto player with great percentages, but IMO, he was taken a little early, especially with all the other 2 guards still available.
My pick - Deron Williams. I love me the point guards, and he was one of the remaining top tier PG's left. I have a serious man crush on this guy's fantasy game. He should be at the top of the league in assists this year. If only he shot a couple more 3's and grabbed a couple more steals, but I'm just nitpicking...
Best pick - Slim's pick of Chauncey Billups. He was the remaining top tier PG and to be able to get him this late is a steal. Billups can usually be expected to go in the 2nd round of most drafts, so Slim did a good job of getting him to pair up with his 2-headed center combo of Bosh and Yao. |

Round 4
1. Paul Pierce Slimjim@CL
2. Michael Redd crank dat ra...
3. Jermaine O'Neal Luke LG
4. Carmelo Anthony Critical Bea...
5. Emeka Okafor CL Mojo
6. Lamar Odom CritterofCL
7. Leandro Barbosa PhilofLG
8. Baron Davis Caron1 LG
9. Joe Johnson CL Porklips
10. LaMarcus Aldridge Michlake(LG)
Surprise pick: A couple of eyebrows were raised when LaMarcus Aldridge was taken by MichLake with the last pick in the round. IMO, it was a solid pick. Aldridge was the last of the 2-way bigs avaible, with a post all-star break stat line of 15 pts, 8 reb, 1 stl, 1.6 blks per game last year. Can you say STUD??? The only reason he wasn't taken earlier is that he hasn't shown that he can put up those types of numbers over an entire season. Medium risk, HUGE reward pick by Michlake.
Leandro Barbosa was also somewhat surprising, especially considering that Joe Johnson was still available. Barbosa's a great roto player, but I think Grant Hill's presence will bring down his numbers... slightly....
My pick: Emeka Okafor. When my turn came up, I had Emeka, Joe Johnson and Aldridge in my que. Since I already went small with 2 of my 3 first picks, I thought it necessary to go big with this pick, especially since blocks are always at a premium. I decided to go with proven production over huge upside and took the safer pick in Okafor. I'm pretty satisfied with my first 4 picks netting me a Duncan/Okafor and Arenas/Deron combo at C and PG, the 2 hardest positions to fill in real life as well as fantasy.
Best pick: Paul Pierce in the 4th round? Are you kidding me? Enough said. |

Round 5
1. Allen Iverson Michlake(LG)
2. Ron Artest CL Porklips
3. Jason Richardson Caron1 LG
4. Brandon Roy PhilofLG
5. Luol Deng CritterofCL
6. Antawn Jamison CL Mojo
7. Tyson Chandler Critical Bea...
8. Corey Maggette Luke LG
9. Josh Howard crank dat ra...
10. Kirk Hinrich Slimjim@CL
Again... standard stuff. The Corey Maggette pick is a little surprising. We all know Brand is out and Maggette should pick up the scoring slack, but this still seems a little high for him. He's really not that great of a roto player, since he doesn't provide any defensive stats or 3 pointers, especially from a wing player. His greatest asset is his ridiculous FTA and FT%, but he doesn't do enough in the other categories, especially since guys like Howard, Hinrich, Miller, etc. were available.
My pick - Antawn Jamison. As long as you know his limitations, Jamison is a roto stud. You have to draft him as a SF, not a PF, since he gives you a ton of 3's and no blocks and average %'s. I love having him on my team because of his dominant points, rebounds and 3's and very low TO's. The TO's are key, since I love having a lot of TO producing PG's on my team.
Best pick - I really like the AI pick here. Michlake got a steal here, and it's even better since it fills his need at PG. Double Bonus!!! AI has a bad reputation for being a category killer. He was to FG% as Shaq was to FT%. But in the last 2 years, he's actually shot a very acceptable 45% from the field. Add in 25 pts, 7 ast, and almost 2 steals and you have yourself a steal in the 5th round. The 4 TO's are a big turnoff, but nobody's perfect. |

Round 6

2. Mike Miller crank dat ra...
3. Mike Bibby Luke LG
4. Andrei Kirilenko Critical Bea...
5. Jason Terry CL Mojo
6. Andre Miller CritterofCL
7. Zach Randolph PhilofLG
8. Kevin Durant Caron1 LG
9. Raymond Felton CL Porklips
10. T.J. Ford Michlake(LG)
Round 6 - anyone notice the run on PG's???
In every draft I've been in this year, I've been very interested in when Durant would be taken. The consensus ROY was finally snagged by Caron1 in the 6th, which is where he should be expected to go. He has a 20 pts, 8 reb, 1 stl/blk/3 pointer per game upside. Sounds nice huh? But I have a gut feeling that he's going to hurt you in FG%, and being the number 1 option on his team, that will be a big impact on your teams FG%. Still pretty good upside though.
My pick - Jason Terry. I was hoping and praying that Terry would drop to me and WOOOOHOOOO, he's on my team. If you've read the recaps up to now, you'll know that I love having a lot of PG's on my team. With Terry's SG position eligibility, I can run a PG/SG/G combo of Arenas/Terry/Deron out there... I likey. Terry's a very underrated roto player as long as you don't expect too much from him. As a PG, he doesn't give you enough assists to be a #1. But slide him over to the SG spot and those 5 assists a game start to look really good, especially combined with the two 3-pointers, low TO's and great %'s. I am VERY happy with this pick.
Notables - The AK47 pick Critical Beatdown was very interesting. Even in a down year, I don't see any way he doesn't outperform his draft position. Even if he and Sloan still hate each other. Now if AK47 actually gets traded to another team? Critical Beatdown just stole a 2nd rounder in the 6th. Great pick.
I didn't like the TJ Ford pick here. With more reliable PG's still available (I stole Mo Williams 2 rounds later ... more details on that later...) and with TJ's injury history, I personally would've gone another route. |

Rounds 1-6 are usually pretty standard stuff. Even if you screw up a pick (all opinions, of course), you will still end up with decent players.
Assuming nobody has a complete brainfart in the first few rounds, the later rounds (7 and on) are what seperates the winners from the runner ups.
The winning teams will have a pretty well balance roster at this point, with no glaring weaknesses.
Taking a look through the league, the following seem to have the early advantage:
Michlake
Porklips
Critical Beatdown
Slimjim
and me... MOJO....
hmmmmm... 4 of those 5 rep. Clublakers! Like I said during the draft....
IT'S OVER!!!
Critter - you need to shore up 3's and blocks. If Peja comes back healthy, that helps one category. You will be winning steals by so much, you can probably trade away steals for blocks.
Note: Critical Beatdown with a Nash/Kidd combo? Are you kidding me? That's NICE!
Slimjim with a Yao/Bosh combo? I love it!!!
recaps on the other rounds to follow.... |

hey guys... just got back from the night out.
didn't drink much... was a really mellow night.
im glad i put my friends on hold to finish the draft. I really like my team.
hands down CL as a team is gonna take the W. i don't think it's even close.
no CLer made any eye raising picks/reaches. while the LGers made a few. _________________

Ok guys, I'll give my two cents on rounds 7 on. Round 7:
Best pick: Rudy Gay (Luke LG). This is probably a guy we were all hoping to fall to us. Unfortunately, he was snatched here. Gay should put up fantastic numbers across the board, and might even turn into the steal of the whole draft (ala Butler or Igoudala last year).
Sleeper Pick: Al Horford (PhilofLG). Quite a reach at this point, but he certainly grabbed him before anyone else could. I think Horford could turn out to be quite a player, especially because he is C eligible. Nice pick. A little early for my taste, but could pay off nicely.
Worst Pick: Monta Ellis (Crank dat....) Certainly a nice risk to reward factor based on last year's performance, however, the Warrior backcourt might hurt his productivity. It's too early to predict his productivity with Belinelli, Jackson, and Co. competing for the sg position. _________________

Round 8:
Best Pick:: I hate to say this, but Ricky Davis. I cannot stand the guy, but his value at round 8 is untouched by any other player in this round. Biggest issue is the fact he may be traded which would be detrimental to his owner. Also, Mo Williams in consideration.
Best Sleeper: To me Richard Jefferson had slept throughout the draft. He shouldn't have been available this long, but I think he'll surprise people by the end of the season.
Worst Pick: Andrea Bargnani. I'm not sold on his potential production. Plus, second year players have a struggling period. I think there were safer options. _________________

Round 9:
Best Pick: Josh Childress. Not a very sexy pick, but a very efficient player. The biggest problem might be playing time, but even with a little, he will benefit the team.
Sleeper: Andrew Bynum. Sorry guys, but our own could turn out to be a block machine this year. Starters minutes are up in the air, but if AB gets them, he is a steal.
Worst Pick: Andris Biedrins. He really fell off the second half of last year. Can you trust a guy the coach has doubts in. Centers are important, but he might be a one hit wonder imo. _________________

Round 10:
Best Pick: Randy Foye. The clear cut starting pg on an average team is a guy to target. Ricky Davis and Al Jefferson will certainly take away some fantasy points, but Foye should have the ball in his hands enough to be a solid contributor.
Sleeper Pick: Nenad Kristic. After tearing up his knee, Kristic might be ready to make his way back to the upper echelon centers. I like this pick.
Worst pick: Cory Brewer. I could be wrong, but what has he proven to be picked so darn early in the tenth round. He could have been gotten a couple rounds later imo. _________________

I like Horford and Gay too, but those guys have POTENTIAL to put up numbers, while there were still solid producers left on board.
Gay has the better upside, but even if Horford lives up to his potential, I don't see him outperforming Okur or David West, both taken after (see my round 7 recap),,, |

Round 7
1. Tony Parker Michlake(LG)
2. Andrew Bogut CL Porklips
3. Rasheed Wallace Caron1 LG
4. Al Horford PhilofLG
5. Rajon Rondo CritterofCL
6. Mehmet Okur CL Mojo
7. David West Critical Bea...
8. Rudy Gay Luke LG
9. Monta Ellis crank dat ra...
10. Shane Battier Slimjim@CL
ROund 7 is typically where the bigger suprises start showing up, and this league was no different.
First shocker was Al Horford taken with the 4th pick. Al Horford is a nice player with the potential to start and put up double double numbers. However, the ATL frontcourt is stacked. If you haven't noticed, their GM has a thing for ignoring guards and drafting forward after forward in the draft. Even if Horford lives up to expectations, I don't see how he can give you better value than Okur or West, taken 2 and 3 picks later.
My pick - Mehmet Okur. I love this pick and I can't believe he fell to me here. I usually expect him to be gone by the time the 5th round rolls around. He a great roto player. Good %'s from a big, solid points and reb, low TO's and as a bonus, he gives you 3's from a big man slot. Similar to Jamison, he complements a PG heavy team well. And since I'm counting on Duncan/Okafor to carry me in blocks, the lack of swats from this PF/C doesn't hurt me as much.
Notable - I like the Sheed pick here. His stats have been dropping every year since coming to Detroit, but he's still a member of the elite trey/stl/blk club. Also, CWebb's out, McDyess has 80 year old knees and he's the only dependable low post threat that Detroit has. Add in (or take away) the 25 pounds that he lost over the summer and Sheed looks like a great pick here. Oh well, you have to give some credit to LG once in awhile.... |
