The only reason why the Lakers are signing him is because of his defense. Hes not a good shooter, so we're basically signing him because of his defensive ability. |
How does he compare to Ariza on defense? |
Hmm, Ira Newble sprained Kobes ankle in 2004-2005.
Kobe went for a rebound, and came down on Newbles foot. _________________

| I guess that's another way of saying we can forget about Ariza coming back for the playoffs? Seems to me this move would be the necessary insurance to cover for that. |

This is insurance for the playoffs in case Ariza is not ready by the start of them.
Walton is not playing well and the Lakers need better defense at the forward position. Odom is doing well, Walton/Rad are struggling immensely on the defensive side of things. With Vlad, at least on most nights you get good offense that makes up for bad defense. With Walton? It's really a big negative for LA to play him right now on a consistent basis because he is not bringing much to the offense.
Now Phil has more options to work with and it's pretty clear that they want a perimeter defender along with some toughness defensively. Newble can bring that. He can defend either forward position, particularly solid at defending the elite wings of the NBA.
At worst, he is going to bring toughness and hard fouls when they are needed in playoff games (and no team wins rings without them) |

| Let's see what Ira has to offer to the team. Better "D" than Luke. With Rad, I think his "D" is ok but needs to improve on it. Get rid of Luke over the summer or sometime next season. |

I have not seen this guy play but from what i've read on the board he sounds legit. So if his energy and defense are on par or close to it as Ariza than I'd say (in my Marv Albert impressanation voice): YES!!! |

I hope this deal is finalized quick so we can see Newble in a Lakers uni. He plays solid defense and that's all we can really ask for at this point. Good pick up, if this follows through. _________________ "The thing that made push pops good is that you had to work for them. IF YOU WERE WEAK YOU DIDN'T GET ANY." |

Great signing
We have plenty of scorers. Newble is just the defender we needed off the bench. _________________ Sweet Daddy Barnstable's Bad A** Broads:

What a good signing! Finally, we add another strong perimeter defender. THat's a real refreshment and a change in philosphy. He is younger than Fish, but still a veteran player obviously. GJ Mitch!
Now, I don't expect Phil to start using him right away like he's a savior of some sort, but if we need a defensive stop(s), they can simply tell him: "Forget the triangle. See that guy there? Go on the court for the next 3-4 possessions and make his life miserable."
And he'll do it, no problem.

| Good signing he's a well liked player around the league. He's very underrated defender. Btw can we please glue Walton to the bench and keep him there the rest of the season. The dude is absolutely useless. |

truer words could have never sounded better.
wait until newble does something stupid. the calvary will be on him faster than the dissappearance of luke walton's ability to shoot.
he's a no risk pickup. leave it at that. don't expect him to be bruce bowen. |

This is a good sign.
Newbie won't give you any scoring. The only scoring he'll do is a putback on an offensive rebound, which is all we need from him on offense.
But we sure can use his tenacity on defense and especially rebounding. Lakers without Bynum is getting pushed around under the basket. Our current best rebounder is Odom and this alone isn't going to cut it for the playoffss.
Good sign. _________________

Newble is a good rebounder also, so it only adds more strength to that department.

Not a bad pickup. Good to see we went for a defensive minded player. _________________ "If I was Kobe," AI continues, "I'd have begged Shaq to come back, and if I was Shaq, I would've begged Kobe to come back. Ego ain't going to get you nothin' except an early exit." |

I like the signing, gives a defensive minded player to the bench. This makes me think that Ariza is done for the season. Hopefully not, that would be nice to have Ariza and Newble, two defensive specialist on the bench come playoff time.
Hopefully Newble can just come in and pester certain players, force them into shots. Any points will be just a bonus for us. _________________

Depends on the shots he's taking. If he starts trying to take players off the dribble and pulls up for a 18-foot fadeaway jumper I will be pissed off.
If he takes 3-4 shots max in the flow of the offense and he's left wide open, I won't be too pissed.
He should be able to to shoot about 45%-50% for this team anyway. He's a career 45% from the field and almost every single player to come play for LA has had a career high FG% in the post-Shaq era. |
