I presume you're correct, L4L.
Snoots, this link is somewhat helpful when it comes to NBA roster regulations. _________________

he better get some mins on Wed. Surely thats enough time with team to get 5 mins PT
Knowing Phil, he probibly already told Ira he needs to spent 2 years on the pine to earn his dues before thinking about getting some meaningful mins _________________ "I wasn't sure I could get up for that dunk...I felt like Luke Walton" - Kobe

So it's for the rest of the season?

| Defense-minded forward Ira Newble was signed for the rest of the season for about $110,000. Newble, 33, who has two points in four minutes of game action with the Lakers, is eligible for the playoffs. The Lakers picked Newble up after Seattle waived him in February. |

I have a bad feeling Newble will be seeing Garbage minutes unless a SF gets injured. I'd like to see Phil use him but I unfortunately don't see it happening. _________________ "I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot. he hit that reverse layup during one of the blowout games, believe it was against the Sonics, and believe it was off a pass from Luke. If he was more explosive he probably coulda dunked the oop pass, but instead caught it, came down and collected himself, then hit the reverse layup on the other side of the rim. _________________

There is as much confusion surrounding his 2nd 10 day contract as there was with his first. No one seems to know whether it's a 10 day or a remainder of the season signing, same as with the 1st contract. I guess we'll find out in 10 days.
Either way I'm glad he's back and that Phil likes what he's seeing out of him in practice. Maybe he'll finally get some playing time soon. We can only hope. _________________

| What's the latest on Ariza? I can't resist but to connect this signing with his health. I'll take a wild guess and assume if Trevor is ready to go for the playoffs, this will be Newble's last contract. Hopefully Phil can still play him because there were a couple of moments in which we could've used him - and it's not as if he can't contribute. |
There's an Ariza Update thread around here somewhere. He's roughly 2 weeks away from running, so my guess is we won't see him until the end of the first round if it goes 7 (which shouldn't happen) or in the 2nd round at the earliest. _________________

ESPN Bottom Line thingy is also reporting that he's signed for the rest of the season. Don't know if they got it from the LA Times or what, but if they both say it I believe it. _________________ Weezy's Weemens

Anyone else think it is possible that they were surprised by how good Newble was in practices and wanted to keep him under wraps until the 10 Day was up and they could sign him for the rest of the year (not wanting anyone else to see how good he was and steal him away from us)?
I have been the most vocal one here bashing Phil for not playing Newble these past 10 days (even have a thread on him not using Mbenga and Newble). But it just occurred to me this might be a possibility as to why they wouldn't play someone that Phil said was the best on the floor in Saturday's practice....and then didn't play him at all on Sunday!
I guess we will know if he suddenly starts using him on Wednesday....after signing him. I sure hope so...since I was very impressed with his play in those measly 3 minutes that one game (and the practice report from Saturday that he was the best on the floor shows it wasn't just a one time fluke for those 3 minutes)!! _________________

| no conspiracy theories. phil just doesn't like using guys who don't understand the triangle. i think they like the defense he brings, but want to wait till he understands the spacing on the other side of the court. |

I think Phil likes to have confidence in his guys to run the offense and that's all there is to it. It's not a question of not valuing the defense.
Same thing happened to Ariza - took a while to go from no minutes to garbage time to valuable contributor and then eventually starter.
I don't see Newble starting but he can certainly provide valuable minutes if he can work out how not to be a liability on offense. _________________ ..with the sharpness.. |

Might be a few reasons why they signed him for the rest of the season...
1. So teams lacking in defense (Suns, Denver) don't pick him up since he's being doing well on Kobe during practice.
2. Ariza's injury might take a bit longer. _________________ BYNUM BRIGAAADDEEEEE!!!

| From what I have heard Newble had a lot of initial problems running the triangle and getting the defensive rotations in his head. Seems he is not as cerebral as some think. |
Translation: Newble was puzzled by the defensive strategy and it's taken him quite a while to break his defensive instincts.
For instance, Ira could'nt adopt the "sag off of Kobe in order to help on Luke," strategy no matter how hard he tried. Said Newble: "man, it's tough. They stuck me on Kobe and I was trying to stick to him as tight as possible and play him tough... especially off he ball. But, everytime he'd throw an entry pass into Luke in the post, Phil would start yelling help, help, damnit Ira, help on Luke. I mean, it's Luke freekin' Walton we're talking 'bout here... Luke freekin' Walton. You want me to leave Kobe Bryant to help on Luke freekin' Walton? Seriously?"
Asked of his impressions of Ira, Kobe commented: "the guy's young... he just needs to execute... we just need to execute as a team." _________________ B. Diddy on Drew: "That boy's gonna be a beast.'' |

| It's a good thing Phil is our coach because HE KNOWS when Newble will be ready to contribute. Just wanting to throw a guy out there to put him out there because you think you know better than the coaching staff who sees him in practice everyday is humorous. I assume that Newble will begin to see some time soon, but if not I trust our staff's judgment on him and that they'll put him out there when the time is right. |

I don't think anyone is saying they know more than Phil. I have said repeatedly I think Phil is best coach in NBA. However no one is perfect. Anyone who thinks Phil didn't make a mistake taking DJ out against Charlotte when he did watched a different game than I did.
When these forwards are going nuts on Lakers I simply don't understand why Phil doesn't put Ira in and see what he can do. He wasn't playing Trevor and the Lakers were against Denver and Iverson was going nuts so he put Trevor in and bang Lakers won and Iverson went cold.
For instance, the other night late against Washington why not put Ira in to guard Caron instead of asking Derek to do it? In Memphis game I have to think Ira could have helped on some of those players.
I think most of us just want to see Ira given a chance to play some D when it seems nothing else is working.
Yes Phil has forgotten more than me or others will know about basketball and I wouldn't want anyone else to coach this team, but it doesn't mean he doesn't make mistakes. |
