Yahoo: The NBA All-Star Game arrives in less than a month, and picking the East and West teams this season should be difficult for coaches and fans alike. The league has its own way of choosing the starting players via fan vote and then has the coaches pick the reserves.
My way? I take the 12 best players from each conference, regardless of position. (Players are listed alphabetically).
EASTERN CONFERENCE
Ray Allen: If you're going to take one of Boston's Big Three, you need to take them all.
Chauncey Billups: He's probably the most underrated point guard in basketball. Everybody knows how valuable he is to Detroit, but his name seems to fall when people rank the top point guards.
Chris Bosh: His "Vote for Chris Bosh" YouTube campaign was great, but he didn't really have to sell me.
Caron Butler: He and Antwan Jamison have kept the Wizards afloat with Gilbert Arenas out. His leadership and defense give him a slight edge over his teammate.
Kevin Garnett: He's been the best player on the team with the best record.
Richard Hamilton: Talk about underappreciated. He forms the other half of the best starting backcourt in basketball.
Dwight Howard: He's Shaq for the new millennium. His combination of size and athleticism can carry a team.
LeBron James: He's having his best season as a pro – good enough, in fact, for him to possibly win the MVP award.
Richard Jefferson: His breakthrough season should also result in his first All-Star appearance.
Joe Johnson: He may finally lead the lowly Hawks into the playoffs. That's reason enough to make him an All-Star.
Jason Kidd: He single-handedly gave Team USA credibility again and he did the same for the Nets.
Paul Pierce: The luckiest player in the league after Garnett and Allen fell in his lap. He easily could have been playing on another rebuilding team.
WESTERN CONFERENCE
Carmelo Anthony: If he improves his rebounding, the Nuggets might contend.
Carlos Boozer: He was injured last year but will actually touch the court at this season's game.
Kobe Bryant: The best player in basketball.
Tim Duncan: The most consistent star in the last decade.
Manu Ginobili: I have to go with three Spurs rather than three Suns. He is the catalyst for the defending champs. This leaves Shawn Marion off my list.
Allen Iverson: When his career is over, the question will be, Who was the best small guard ever: AI, Isiah Thomas or Tiny Archibald?
Yao Ming: The best center in the West.
Steve Nash: The best point guard in basketball.
Dirk Nowitzki: Might be this season's forgotten star, but that suits him fine.
Tony Parker: Marriage hasn't slowed him down.
Chris Paul: The Hornets are on fire and the game is in New Orleans. Paul is primed for a big All-Star night.
Amare Stoudemire: His play will be the difference if the Suns win the championship. |
