This the part I'm interested in. Does the person have to manually distort the shadow to the car? Or does Adobe figure out the topography automatically? Or is it a bit of both? I'm talking about Kobe's shadow, not the light post. |
no adobe doesn't do anything, you have to do it all on your own. when you arrange it and place it on top, it looks decent, but doesn't give you the characters of what a shadow would do if something goes over it....so yes you have to manually adjust it as it fights.....
in this case, they planned it out so they don't have to do much because barely any shadows intersect with each other.
Basically, this commercial is ridiculously easy to have made. I have come to the conclusion that they were both shot on the same day within maybe 5 mins of each other. Then both clips had the same lighting angle and exposure adn everything, while the camera was on one spot and one spot only....
if tripods or stands didn't exist, then this commercial would have been impossible to do.
They needed to film very close to each other time wise to get the same angle shadows and lighting and everything. This whole thing is a mask of where kobe jumps, but it is in the same exact spot in the background, so all you see moving is kobe...therefore the mask around kobe does not have to be THAT tight.

Its fake, and meant to be ..
either they use special effects , or he and the car were not in front of each other, but rather side by side , but the angle made it look like he jumped over it.
and im as much of a homer as the next guy, but those thinking this is real is making us Laker fans look really bad to those non-Laker fans coming in here.
but...
can he do this ? Yes he can
did he do it? hell no that would have been stupid.

no it is not.....
i have been taking video classes for a good year and a half
i have been trying to explain to revgen
basically, it is the same shot...the camera is the key. the tripod or stand is the key.
The timing of the shot is the most important thing so the shadows do not move or change or the exposure does not shift. END OF STORY.
Lets say for example this was shot at 5.......At 5 Kobe jumps and acts with Ronny....at 5:05 the car drives by with nothing in front of him.
No green screen needed here at all. All it is is a simple mask of Kobe jumping. The only movement is Kobe and the car, so it is unbelievably easy to manipulate.......basically....the car was the real clip...and on top layer was Kobe jumping with a mask around him.....
The mask did not have to be tight whatsoever because the background is exactly the same with timing and lighting.
PERIOD.
(for those who do not know what a MASK is....look at the left where you see the player with his name on Clublakes.com There is a mask around the player so only the player shows, nothing else. Basically it is an outline to block out everything else around a person or object or subject so only that person or object or subject shows. Clear enough?)

two videos layered together...kobe jumping and the car were shot seperatley...they cut everything else around kobe or the car out and so it looks like kobe is jumping on the car.

An illusion. Well done.
Just look at where Kobe is standing in relation to the shadow. He's basically on the shadow.
Now watch as the car passes by. It's not centrally driving over the shadow. It's basically passing just behind Kobe. Its passenger wheels are passing over the shadow.
If they had shot it without the shadow of the light standard, it would have been more convincing. Still, pretty fun.

To me, it seems as though Kobe started his jump next to the car, but landed behind it, meaning the car turned slightly to the right while passing under Kobe.
That is, of course, if it's real .

Well, in that case, than it looks like it could be fake. That is if 1 person could do it in Adobe.

side/above the car (focus on his shadow) .. car is also lower in the field of view than in the first shot, perhaps because it is turning to the right ever so slightly..

I hope you all dont think that is real. Its not cgi or green screen or any of that. They used the illusion of angles to fool the audience. All Kobe had to do was jump as high as he could while the car drove on the side of him.

| If you pause it when Kobe is in the air and the car is under him you can see the shadow of the poll or light poll (whatever it is) on the car, so I guess that does give it a real look to it. But is there anyway they can put that there to make it seem real? I don't doubt Kobe could do it, but why would he do it? Like other people have pointed out... Imagine something went wrong and he was done for the season, I mean he could have probably had a real bad accident and who knows what could have happend! Never say never, let's just thank god everything went smooth and hope Kobe doesn't try anything like this again from here on out, assuming IT WAS REAL! |
