6/1:
5/3: Two new videos up. One exclusively with Mr. Kobe MVP Bryant that is 6:24 minutes long. Kobe goes into a myriad of emotions, but its good to see that he got some hardware for a season well done. Unlike year's past, he truly earned it this year and it directly reflected on the success of our team.
The other video features Phil, Fish, Pau and LO with a running time of 9:36 minutes. Looks like our guys are ready to go.

Practice report:
Players will gather to all watch the Hou/Utah game together tonight.
| Quote: |
While the Rockets and the Jazz are still embroiled in their First Round series, the Lakers continue to prepare for battle against whichever rival emerges.
With four days off already since sweeping the Denver Nuggets, Lamar Odom described the overall mood of the team as “Energetic, upbeat, outgoing. Everybody’s in a good mood,” said Lamar. “We’re in the playoffs, it’s the best time of year.”
The forward added, “This is a good time for us to practice. It’ll be a tough game tonight…I’m looking forward to watching it, seeing who comes out victorious.”
“It’d be fun to play on Sunday, but if not, we’ll wait,” said Odom in regards to a possible Game 1 this weekend against Utah should they defeat Houston tonight. Kobe echoed his teammate’s statement, revealing that “If we play on Sunday, we’ll be ready on Sunday. If it’s Tuesday, we’ll be ready on Tuesday.” Bryant also mused that he hopes the Jazz win so he can stop answering hypothetical questions and start talking about matchup specifics.
In addition to going through practice today, the entire team plans on meeting up tonight to watch the Jazz vs. Rockets game together–providing a chance for team bonding while helping them study up on their next opponent.
“We just kind of get loose, relax, enjoy each others company,” said Odom. “Camaraderie is the most important thing as far as a team goes. Of course, we’re fans of the game as well so we like to be entertained. This time of year, you want to pick up some tendencies of some other players.”
Coach Jackson said that this is not the first time that this year’s team has met to watch games together, revealing that although he believes his team has managed to maintain their sharpness during the prolonged break, it is always difficult to come into Game 1 of a new round against an opponent who is coming off an extended series. According to Jackson, his 2000-2001 Lakers championship team suffered from a 10 day break prior to playing Game 1 against Philadelphia in the finals.

5/1: Practice vid up that runs about 5:35 and it features Fish, Phil and Kobe.
Lakers.com Basketblog breaks it down the best:
The benefits of extended rest
| Quote: |
Despite some experts’ assertion that too much rest between opponents can do more harm than good in the playoffs, Kobe said that the Lakers are taking full advantage of the time off.
“It’s always good,” said Bryant. “You get a chance to recover and get your mind right for the next series.”
“I think for us, we look at it as an opportunity to sharpen our edge,” said Kobe, when asked whether or not the break hurts the team more on the offensive end or the defensive end. “We were playing well in the first series, but we’ll be able to play much better. This time here, we just take it to sharpen our minds a little bit, our mental game and how we want to approach it and try to be better the next series.”
Regardless of whether or not the Lakers face off in the Second Round against the Jazz or the Rockets, Bryant said that the team’s preparation will not change.
“I don’t think there’s anything specific that I look for…obviously, they have different styles of play,” said Bryant. “Ultimately for us, it’ll be about stopping penetration.”
“I’ve played against those guys a lot of times so there’s nothing that really threatens me that I haven’t seen in 12 years.”
Although the Lakers are still 12 wins away from their coveted fifteenth NBA championship, Derek Fisher says that the team’s future is bright beyond just this season.
“To think of how good our future can be if we just believe in each other and trust each other and get better every year…That’s exciting as well, but right now, we’re just waiting on who we’ll see to kind of take that next step,” said Fisher. |
Kobe advises Luke to "shake off" his regular season woes
| Quote: |
While fans may be surprised by Luke Walton’s breakthrough performance in the Lakers’ First Round sweep against the Nuggets, Kobe said he saw signs of improvement long before the forward averaged 14 points in the four games–third best on the team–in the series.
“He had a stretch last year where he was playing extremely well,” said Bryant, reminding everyone of Walton’s emergence as an all-around threat when Lamar Odom was injured at the beginning of last season.
Although he struggled with injuries and inconsistency during the 2007-2008 season, averaging only seven points and four assists, Kobe said that it wasn’t due to a lack of ability.
“I think for him, it’s a matter of confidence with him,” said Bryant. “Sometimes, he’ll get down on himself and be a little hard on himself…more than he should be. There’s been some times this year when after a game, after a tough loss where he went one for six or zero for six and I’ll tell him, ‘Look, Luke—I went five for thirty. Shake it off.’ You’ve just got to stay in his ear a little bit, keep him confident because he has all the tools, he has all the gifts.” |
Fish believes Kobe has earned a MVP nod (IMHO, an announcement to make it official is not too far away. Kobe WILL be the NBA's MVP)
| Quote: |
After practice today, Lakers veteran and three-time NBA Champion Derek Fisher reflected on NBA players’ differing values as they go through various stages of their careers.
“I think if you ask most guys, it’d be winning a championship,” said Fisher, when asked what is most important to players. “I think it would vary depending on the guy; there are some guys who have been in the game for a long time who never got that opportunity to get that big contract so if they’ve got a big contract, I’m sure they would take advantage of it.”
“But, a lot of guys in our league have made a great living and made more money than they have to make to have a good life. I think winning a title would be the thing most guys would say, above any and all things in professional sports, that’s what I want to experience.”
As a teammate to a player that has experienced both individual and team success in Kobe Bryant, Fisher says that sometimes, it takes players a while to realize which is more important to them.
“I think you start to kind of see that natural evolution take place as guys move through their career,” said Fisher. “You think about all of the individual awards that so many great players have won in the past. They get to a place in their career where championship trophies and championship rings–that’s the trophy, that’s the holy grail that everyone wants to have and continue to win as they move through their careers.”
As fans and the organization await word on this season’s MVP recipient, Derek said, “I think that Kobe’s in that place in his career where 12 years in, there isn’t anything else he needs to do to separate himself from anybody else individually. How he will separate himself from in terms of being one of the greatest players to ever play the game will be in how many championships his teams win. I know he wants to keep that clock going up to four, five, six, seven, however high he can hit it.”
Although each season raises questions about what criteria a player must meet to win the MVP award, Fisher says that Kobe not only had a tremendous statistical season, but also excelled as a teammate.
“If you saw what Andrew Bynum was doing before he got injured…If you saw Jordan Farmar, Sasha Vujacic, Ronny Turiaf and myself and Lamar Odom…I think everybody can reasonable say that they were better this year because of what he was able to do and has been able to do,” said Fisher. “I think all the so-called criteria have been met and he’s deserving of it.” |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4/30: 2 videos up; 1 being a 5:03 vid with Phil and the other being a 7:54 practice vid with LO, Fish, Pau and Kob.
So you're wondering what was said, right? Well, "thanks for asking" and its posted below by the Lakers.com Basketblog
Utah or Houston?
| Quote: |
Nothing but politically correct answers from everyone when posed with the question of who they want to play in Round two.
When asked if he preferred one over the other Phil Jackson quipped, “No. Thanks for asking though.”
Home court advantage has been a huge factor for the Jazz all season and probably the biggest difference between the two teams that could face the Lakers in round two.
“Utah doesn’t lose too many games at home, they play great basketball there. The rest is the same. Half court teams that rely on their defense,” said Lamar Odom.
A matchup with the Jazz would have extra meaning for Derek Fisher after he spent last season in Salt Lake and played a pivotal role in the Jazz’s playoff run.
“The emotions will be high considering what took place while I was there and how many things have changed and the way they’ve changed over this past year. It’ll mean a lot to play against the Jazz. But at the same time it’ll be emotional in a negative way in terms of facing my former teammates with all the stakes as high as they’ll be. I’m prepared for it, but it’ll definitely be emotional.”
Phil Jackson seems to be less emotional about a trip to SLC. When asked which city he would choose to visit he replied, “There’s no choice there but Houston right?”
Although he might prefer to visit Houston, the extended travel that would be required in a series with the Rockets is also on Jackson’s mind. “That’s a three hour flight for us and a two hour time zone change. We’ve been caught in that web before with San Antonio in a number of playoffs this decade. (You get home at) three o’clock back here in the morning and have to play the next day with just a day rest and that day is almost lost when you get back at that time in the morning after flying back after these midnight games.” |
So how does the week look waiting for the 2nd round to start?
| Quote: |
The Lakers second round opponent is still TBD, as is their schedule for the conference semi-finals, but the staff is keeping a mindful eye on the players and preparing for a Sunday start date.
“We always value the fact that we practice one day, then have a day off, something like that. Friday’s game will obviously determine something that goes on,” said Jackson. Phil also said that he plans to run, “short, but swift and concise practices the rest of the way until Sunday.”
If the Houston/Utah series extends to a game seven there is a possibility that Jackson would give the team Saturday off and run a full practice on Sunday to be ready for a midweek series opener. |
Will all this waiting make us rusty?
| Quote: |
With the Lakers advancing to the second round of the playoffs in just four games the only thing they can do now is sit back and wait to find out who their second round opponent will be.
Houston whipped the Jazz last night, edging the series back to 3-2 as they head back to Salt Lake City for game six on Friday night.
Head Coach Phil Jackson is wary about a mental letdown that off-days can create, citing the extended layoff the team had before the 2001 finals.
“There’s a certain sense of tension that comes along with playing a lot that you have to get ready for the match, the bout, the contest, and the energy that you have to summon play at it. The longer you get away from it, the more you forget about it. That one year that we were walking through the playoffs without a loss we had ten days off between the Philadelphia series where we lost the first game of that series.”
Kobe Bryant is looking forward to a couple days of to recuperate, but isn’t worried about the team having a let down because of their competitive spirit in practice, “Obviously there’s nothing like the game, but we’re a team that gets in here and works hard.”
In the meantime the Lakers will use these next couple of days to rest players with nagging injuries and get back to basics.
“I think you can do some things with players—things that have slipped off, the fundamentals, the skills that you can’t get done, the rest and the treatment that they need. Some of our players got two days off today,” said Jackson.
Guard Derek Fisher stressed the importance that these couple of down days can have to a team after an 82-game season. “The ability to get rest is one that over time really can be an advantage for you. Having the opportunity to heal up and be fresh right away at the start of the next series, but also be in a position to be able to sustain it no matter how long the series goes.”
The Hornets and Spurs wrapped up their series last night and will meet each other starting Saturday in New Orleans. |

4/27: 10:51 Practice video with Kobe, Pau, LO and Phil. Due to the ambient noises (ie bouncing basketballs against the practice hardwood) the interviews are somewhat incoherent, but you must see the video to witness the "I believe" signs
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4/26: 7:18 Post-game interviews with Sasha, LO, Fish and Luke. There is also a 4:03 Phil Pre-game conference video.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4/25: 11:20 minutes worth, in which LO explains that playoff basketball is predicated on runs and how long a team can sssssssustain one.
Kobe is more hungrier with this championship run seeing how Shaq wanted it more due to their age difference during the 3peat era. Kob also doesn't mind the added responsibility attached to it since "you can't be Superman and not deal with the pressure of dropping somebody (ie his team and LA fans) when trying to rescue them."
Luke feels he is playing well now since his body feels well. No one is 100% at this stage of the season, but he feels he is as close to that level as a player can feel. His head hurts like crazy by that Kleiza roundhouse kick in game 2.
Phil gets asked how hungry he is for this title run spawning off of Kobe's previous comments. Phil responds that he hasn't had breakfast yet and its past his lunch time now, so he's as hungry as one can be. He also comments on Ronny being particularly hungry since he could barely eat due to his tonsillitis "disease". As a result, Ronny looked slow and lethargic today in practice but is expected to be activated for tomorrow's game.
Lakers.com Basketblog transcribes the practice vid way more thoroughly...
Kob and LO anticipating Denver to blitz them at home for Game 3
| Quote: |
After seeing Houston, Toronto, and Washington all win Game 3 after falling 2-0 in their playoff matchups, the Lakers know they have to be ready for Denver’s best shot. “We expect them to come out and play,” said Bryant. “They’re competitors.”
Lamar Odom recognizes that the Nuggets aren’t going to give the Lakers the series after being down 2-0, and feels that the Lakers need to be “really focused to pull this one out” and grab a playoff win on the road. He does however believe that the team is feeling a little more confident after going up two games to none. “Whenever you have a lead period, you’re going to have a little more confidence, but if you watched playoff basketball last night every team that had a 2-0 lead, lost.”
Kobe remained confident in his team and is prepared to go on the road. “We’ve been a pretty solid road team.” Bryant added. “We’ve had some big games on the road – Utah, Dallas, Denver and some other places that are tough to play and I think it helps because you understand how to get it done.” |
Kob and Phil describe how hungry they are for another title
| Quote: |
After watching the first two games of the first round series against the Denver Nuggets, it is easy to see that Kobe Bryant wants to win; but how does that desire to win another ring compare to his passion for the first time he went through a championship run in 2000.
“It’s different. The first one, I was so young. Plus I was sharing that pressure with somebody else.” Bryant said. “Now, the pressure is squarely on my shoulders to try and bring another championship here. It’s something I accept. I’m a little hungrier now than I was the first time.”
Does he like having all of the pressure rest on his shoulders? “It comes with the territory.” Bryant added. “Can’t be superman and not deal with the pressure of dropping somebody when you go to rescue them.”
When asked about the hunger Coach Phil Jackson has to grab his tenth championship, compared to his first title with Chicago or the Lakers in 2000, Jackson responded saying he is very hungry. “I haven’t had breakfast since 8:30 a.m. actually” and pointed out that “it’s past my lunchtime.” |
The Nuggets techs demonstrate emotion and that emotion can turn into something LA doesn't want to deal with in Denver
| Quote: |
Allen Iverson has already received three technical fouls, including being tossed from Game 1, as the Nuggets (who have a total of six technical fouls) have dropped the first two games of the series in Los Angeles. Several Lakers realize that emotion could turn the other way once they arrive in Denver.
“They’re an emotional bunch. We have to understand that could work against us, particularly in game 3;” said Bryant. “Once they get the crowd behind them and they gain momentum, their emotions all of a sudden now becomes their biggest strength. What we have to try to do is keep it quiet as much as we possibly can.”
“In the playoffs you get a little more emotional, can’t help it;” added Odom. “Every game is important. When we’re up there and facing their crowd, we will try to keep our composure so that doesn’t happen to us.”
Luke Walton did not seem to be as worried about the tables being turned in Denver as he has his relaxation methods down to a science. Taking deep breaths usually works for him, but in dire needs he suggested that he might have to rub his ears to calm himself. |
Hope Ronny feels well enough to get his 1st significant PT of the postseason tomorrow
| Quote: |
Ronny Turiaf may have looked “slow and lethargic” on the court today, but according to Coach Jackson, he hopes to have Ronny be active for Game 3. “I thought he got a sweat today and I think he looks better.” Jackson noted. “He says he feels better.”
Turiaf has lost 11 founds due to the illness. |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4/23: Game 2 Post-game vid that's 5:27 minutes long that interviews Luke, LO and Pau.
Also there is Phil's pre-game inteview that is 6:43 minutes long.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New practice presser up with Kobe, Pau and Phil. Its about 14 minutes long and they discuss many things...my favorite being Phil's response on a question of LA's "penetration defense" and Kobe's response to cruising on the 405.... but the Lakers.com Basketblog transcribes the rest better than I ever could:
On being cautious about how to approach Game 2
| Quote: |
With Game 2 in the best of seven series against the Nuggets looming, Coach Jackson said, “I anticipate both teams to play hard. I think that’s what you do in this situation. You play up to the limits and try not to go over them and I anticipate guys will be within the bounds.”
While the Lakers have all of the momentum as the series moves forward, Jackson said that, “The pressure’s still on us. We still have the pressure to win on our home court, play as hard as we did before. It’s very difficult for a team to come back with the same intensity.”
“There’s a natural tendency to relax,” said Jackson, noting Denver’s repeated knack for coming through with big victories when they need it most. “We talked about that both yesterday and today as a ball club. They have to come out and play hard and when they have the foot on the neck to keep it there.”
Kobe Bryant echoed Jackson’s statements, revealing that he thinks the Nuggets will come out focused and determined in Game 2.
“We want to protect our home court,” said Bryant. “That’s really the key. If I’m Denver, I’m still sitting over there comfortable because I know that our goal was to come here and get a split. It’s our duty and the pressure is on us to not let that happen.”
Kobe said that he is not sure if Denver will rely on Kenyon Martin’s height to try and bother him as he did in Game 1, but he will be prepared either way.
“I don’t know if they’re going to start out with Kenyon on me,” said Bryant. “I don’t know if they’re going to go with the matchups they used against me during the regular season, more zone. We don’t know, we just try to prepare ourselves for every scenario and when the game starts, execute accordingly.”
The Lakers star also addressed the five technical foul calls that were call during an especially chippy Game 1, explaining that it was nothing he has not seen before.
“It’s just playoff basketball,” Bryant said. “If you look around the league and other series, it just happens. I remember Denver last year had a series against San Antonio that was extremely physical. They have physical players. Kenyon Martin’s a physical player. Carmelo Anthony’s a physical player. It’s just part of it.” |
Phil thinks Houston might have a problem
| Quote: |
With last night’s victory over the Rockets–the second in a row on the road at the Toyota Center–the Jazz have left Tracy McGrady and Co. in a sizeable hole heading to Salt Lake City. The series is of particular interest to Lakers coaches and fans as the team will advance to face the winner if they can beat Denver in their best of seven series.
“Utah has really put Houston in a bind and they have to come back and play well,” said Jackson. “Everyone knows that as good as your home court record is in the season, you can’t rely on that in the playoffs. The playoffs bring a whole new level of basketball.”
Even though they are now forced to win at least one game in an arena where the Jazz posted a gaudy 37-4 home record this season, Jackson said that the Rockets must find a way to pull out a victory.
“Houston’s now playing a one game series and they’ve got to come back and win this game. That’s the way they have to look at it.” |
Pau is ready to re-adjust to any possible Denver adjustments for Game 2
| Quote: |
After scoring a game-high 36 points, pulling down 16 rebounds and dishing out eight assists, center Pau Gasol undoubtedly enters Game 2 against the Nuggets tomorrow with a huge target on his back.
“They will cut off from the second defender a little better,” said Gasol. “When Marcus (Camby) left me, most of the time they didn’t cut off that second man. That second man helper didn’t get there on those rotations to me. I guess they will try to allow us to shoot more from the outside and not get in the lane as easy as we did. You’d rather give up open long shots than layups and dunks.”
Looking ahead to Game 2, Gasol said that he plans to approach the game as he does any other–with intensity and aggressiveness.
“I don’t go into a game having a certain plan,” said Gasol. “I’m going to make reads just like I always do on defense and on offense and take advantage of what they give us.”
With the win in Game 1, the Spanish star finally put an end to his 0-12 career payoff record–a welcome change for Pau. Still, Gasol said that his mindset entering tomorrow night’s battle remains the same.
“I don’t usually or pretty much ever think about the past,” said Gasol. “Maybe I go over it sometimes just to appreciate the present, but that’s about it. I’m in a different situation, a different scenario and just about everything about it is different so I’ll definitely approach it as a game that we definitely need to take and after the game, make sure we’re 2-0 and not 1-1.” |
Phil and Pau compliment LO
| Quote: |
While Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant received much of the credit for the Lakers’ march to the top of the Western Conference down the stretch of the season, Lamar Odom has quietly been playing the best basketball of his career. With another double-double performance (17 points, 14 rebounds) in Game 1 against the Nuggets, Odom’s teammates and coaches are taking notice of his exceptional all-around play.
“Lamar has certainly proved his value to this team in many ways,” said Coach Jackson. “I just think that it’s given him much more of a comfort zone. Lamar’s an exceptional passer. A lot of passes come in critical, close quarters lane area-type drop-off situations and with Pau’s capabilities, it’s just improved his assist ratio, his ability to make plays. All those things have helped Lamar.”
Even though his role on offense has been reduced to third option on most nights, Jackson said that Odom fills his niche well.
“I don’t think Lamar wants any more shots,” said Jackson. “I think Lamar is perfectly comfortable taking eight to10, maybe 12 shots in a ball game. I don’t think he feels he needs to shoot the ball and when he does take it, he stays within the context of what he wants to do.”
Odom’s newest teammate Pau Gasol–credited with reducing the pressure on Lamar to score–says that the forward’s outstanding play extends beyond the offensive side of the game.
“He’s motivated,” said Gasol. “He goes into games with a great attitude and great activity. He’s very active with the ball, without the ball, on the boards, defending. I think he’s stepping up and taking a big role defensively. I think all around, this situation, the same with everyone else, is an opportunity to accomplish something great and that’s why we’re all so focused and in tune to what we’re doing” |
Phil comments on Injury updates of our French Connection
| Quote: |
After D.J. Mbenga was diagnosed with bruised ribs yesterday after taking a hard fall during practice, Coach Jackson said he was forced to limit his minutes during today’s workout session, but not before he got a good run in.
With Ronny Turiaf still feeling under the weather and noticeably lacking his usual energy, Jackson said he only allowed the forward to break a small sweat before taking him off the floor.
“We hope that he’ll improve,” said Jackson. “He improved from probably yesterday until today.” |

Wow, Phil looks rough.
Why have the Lakers stayed in touch with Kwame? Don't do it this summer Mitch, don't!
I was glad to hear that Odom told Phil to leave him on the floor last night. He's so laid back during his interviews, his eyes are going left to right every 2 seconds, even when he's cracking jokes his doesn't change the inflection in his voice. _________________

Phil Jackson didn't seem to like the reporters cracking jokes of Kwame, lol only he does. I think Phil likes Kwame's defense, I think they expect him back next year at a very cheap price. _________________ There are so many emotions at the end of the season, nobody likes to talk about it. It was good seeing Lamar in a good mood. Other than that, it's so so, nothing new here. The team is just focused as usual. _________________ "We play for one thing and one thing only, and that's championships."-Kobe Bryant

Did Phil just admit to tampering?
I especially liked the question about practicing inbound plays. Phil tried to give the verbose cover-up for, "No, we haven't! But now that you mention it, we're going to practice it before the season ends." |

lol... DON'T Do It Mitch! |
Well considering Kwame's screwed up history, I'm pretty sure Phil is the closest thing Kwame's ever had to a father figure. _________________

Thats very true.
Add to that Phil actually likes Kwame and has always given him mins. The team also like Kwame and he was comfortable here from what we could see.
I would actually be suprised if Kwame is not back here in the off season. If the price is right i wouldnt mind that _________________ "I wasn't sure I could get up for that dunk...I felt like Luke Walton" - Kobe

I would love to have Kwame back. He seems motivated, he is 25 or 26 and will not get much money, so he will sign a 2 or 3 year deal and should try to play his butt off so he can get one more big pay day before he calls it a career. He is the enforcer that we are missing. |
