New Lakers.com videos of the pre-game conference w/Phil and the post-game interviews with our "Big 3" are up for the Dallas game.
Phil comments on Ariza not coming back for a while....how Drew could not see any PT till the playoffs....how Pau has been playing the 4 in practices to help accelerate Drew being integrated into the starting lineup.
Post game comments by Pau have him explaining his ankle. LO took so many shots from the paint, cause Phil rode him on how bad his jumper had looked in the shootaround. Kobe wants to return the favor in Sacramento....expect poppin of the collar/jersey and pumping of the fists after a Laker victory.

Phil talks about going over tape to avoid dribble penetration particularly from the guard spot. Mentions Kobe's late play where he heard his team call out to watch for the high screen and roll, but in preventing that, he gave up a direct line to the basket. Brain Shaw has said that our guard defense has been an "embarrassment". Coaches met together and talked about spacing, closing out, etc. Phil believes that preventing opposing penetration can be rectified this late in the season. Practice was predominantly defense oriented. Good to hear.
Doesn't want the players to overlook the Clips in prepping for a weekend where they face the 2 teams (NO and SA) that are ahead of them in the West.
Hasn't really scouted any particular team for the playoffs due to constant flux in seeding.
Physical limitations to Fish and Luke are being addressed. Fish won't practice much from here on out to prevent exacerbating his injury. Luke will most likely play against the Clips. A minor mention of Drew heading to NY to get the okay to practice Sat. and possibly play Sun. _________________

Damn Vash. You scared me. I read the first post and it said Gasol was out and "doubtful" for Friday and it freaked me out.
Then I looked at the post date and realized it was made in March =) |

As to the bolded part, I hope he puts that squarely on his shoulders and GETS THEM PREPARED. Because this team's preparation against lesser, non-playoff contenders has been, to borrow Brian Shaw's terminology, an embarrassment... _________________ "No disrespect to Kyra Sedgwick, but that damn boy Kobe Bryant is The Closer." |

Haha...sorry about that.
Maybe I should take the kobe_luver approach of updating my initial post. But then again, I feel like I'm stealing something that belongs to another. That plus it takes much more longer to do it her way...and I'm way too lazy these days.
That reminds me. This is a bit OT. I'm not saying that you don't know about the feature knm, I'm just suggesting it to those that might not know about it.
Fellas and gals, I'm sure you notice this icon: ....next to a thread that has new post content. Well, if you click on it, you will be directed to the most recent post created after your last browse of that thread.
You guys are all smart folks here, but I'm just going to dumb this down, so there isn't really any confusion. If you have already browsed through a thread and at that point, its completely read through by you, then the thread will appear with a purple ball and a white page icon next to it. However when you see a red/orange page icon in front of a thread you have already browsed through, then if you click on that icon, it will take you to the post that was created right after the post you browsed on your last visit of that particular thread.
Anyways..... back on topic and sorry again for the scare bro. _________________

New pre-game and post-game videos against the Spurs are up.
Phil in his pre-game has very interesting comments pertaining to Kobe-gate earlier in the season. Oct. 28th, 2 days before the season started, there was a very important sit down. If you can all recollect, that is when Kobe to the Bulls seemed to be blocked by Kob's trade veto clause.
Phil then revealed a little after the season started that all talks of Kobe outbound had been scrapped and that the Bulls trade was the last legitimate attempt. Thank God that is all in the past and things worked out for the better.
In the post game, we once again have an aloof LO. Dude just continues to make me laugh with his interviews. Like his jumpshot, he was getting better in front of the camera, but now he seems to have taken a step back in both dept. Still I got faith in LO to get his jumper back to slippery and in his interviews to start talking slick again.
Kobe also is featured in the post-game and someone makes a "cute" cameo....and I'm not talking about Screamin' A.
Also here are some of their comments transcribed:
| Quote: |
Head Coach Phil Jackson
(On today's game…)
"What a half. We came out and played an exceptional second half, we were on our heels at the end of the first half, Parker was jamming the ball down our throat and we couldn't seem to find a way to stop him. I thought the second half we came out and made a good defensive stand and stopped penetration."
(On the defense in the second half was the best of the year…)
"Yes, it was a good one. I don't know statistically whether it was or not, but it was certainly a good second half."
(On accomplishing goals…)
"Well we know we have to win out the sequence, and that there's no definite, it's still a responsibility on our part to finish this the right way. And that was our message in the locker room after the game. Fortunately for us we got some rest, got some guys who had a little bit of time to recover before Tuesday night."
(On the recent defensive efforts…)
"We got more aggressive on screen-roll coverage. You know, both these guards activated our defense, we got serious about the fact that we have to stop that penetration by those two guys. First half that wasn't great, obviously a lot of Parker's came without screens, but you know that's simply part of the team defense, that improved a lot."
(On the bench's performance…)
"They always shut the door on the game, and that's been their role. Early in the season, the first half of the year, they really were exceptional at that. It saves a lot of energy for the rest of the team, and gives them a lot of confidence, and that's a good sign for us."
(On Derek Fisher playing on an injured foot…)
"He's mentioned that he's now adjusted to what the deficit is all about as far as his foot, and that he feels like he can start extending himself a little more. He came to me this week, I was shortening his minutes and making sure he was going to be able to have some space and time to adjust to that, and he just came and said that after the Portland game everything starts to feel again like he can move on it. That was important, and we know that we have to attack, and if you're getting scored upon it's important to attack the guy that is doing all that, and he came down and attacked Parker at the other end of the floor in the third quarter, that was perfect."
(On Lamar Odom…)
"Lamar and Kobe have to take on so many types of defensive assignments, because they play a lot of minutes, more minutes than anyone else on the team, and as a consequence they are shuffling between positions. In this situation, playing forward-guards like Finley and Udoka, in situations where he's got to now cover the corner and do some things that are more guard-oriented, and starting the game he's out there on Oberto, etc. and Thomas and he makes that adjustment during the course of the game, and that's one thing we're really asking him to do is make those adjustments as to three point shooters, drivers and penetraters to rebounders to post up players, and his recognition I think has gotten a lot better."
Kobe Bryant
(On tonight's game…)
"Just a lot of fun. We had a great time. It was great to see the bench come in and play as well as they do, and it was exciting for us."
(On the second half…)
"It's all about momentum. We got some momentum in the second half with steals… and made timely baskets."
(On the team's defensive strategy…)
"I think we are being more aggressive. I think that we have found our defensive identity. It's just like offense, you have to find what you're identity is. I think we found that defensively."
(On his approach to the game…)
"We are very aggressive. We have a tremendous amount of versatility, wings, and bigs who are fast and athletic and long. We can get after guys… we can kind of sit back and let them bring it to us."
Pau Gasol
(On the team's plan…)
"Now we have to beat Sacramento. We might come out a little flat against Sacramento because they just beat New Orleans, so we know how they'll play. We don't want them to get away with a win on our next game."
(On defensive adjustments…)
"We're just stepping up. We're just stepping up a little bit. In the intensity and the concentration that we are putting out there, I think is making a big difference. The way we play against teams we respect, that are tough with us, we step it up. We play with someone who is not as strong, we'll come out and we'll fight them."
(On the final game against Sacramento…)
"We have one game, and we want to take care of it. Then we have to think about what's going to come next."
Lamar Odom
(On the team's performance…)
"We just communicated and used our athleticism. We rotated to three point shots in the corner, and we were able to rebound; we didn't give them too many offensive rebounds."
(On keys to the victory…)
"Communication. And, also our athleticism… They have some small basketball players, and communicating better was helping us rotate, scramble, speed the game up."
(On winning the Western Conference Title…)
"We only have one more. At this time of year, I've never been here before in my career. There's a point where we win as many games in the Western conference and get home court advantage for the playoffs."
(On the second half…)
"We didn't really finish the second quarter out the way we wanted to. I felt like we could have been up 10 or 15 points. We just came in and we were all on the same page as far as energy. We had one goal, and it was to win the basketball game. |

| I love how Kobe pushed back on the idea that Shaq was the only one making teammates better. The I got 3 rings comment was slick. Seems like another time when we were champions. |

IMO, Ariza has to try to come back in the 2nd round or WCF(whichever series Phil thinks we'll need him) and give us whatever he's got. The difference between him and Luke is large enough to, well to put it simply, make a difference.
Right now, what we need is to buy time for Bynum. Even if he somehow completely breaks down after 7 games, it would be good enough, because with Bynum back, he won't be necessary as Odom would take most of his minutes anyway.
It may seem a little selfish on our part, but hey, anything for the team. |

Practice vids are up on Lakers.com now.
Like you said, Phil is rockin Kobe's Ashton Martin jumpin sweat suit. Its a good look. Phil's practice vid is about 10 mins long.
Then there is another video that is about 5 minutes long and it features comments by Pau, LO and Kob. No smiles...all business. Our guys are ready to go.

| It's nice to see everyone focused. Obviously if you're a Denver fan, you were already concerned going into this series. But after watching the 4 most important members of the team give their takes and sound to serious, you should be shaking in your boots. No upset this round. |

| Kobe- Having Bynum in the lineup is "more of a luxury at this point" rather than a necessity. That only tells me one thing, these guys are confident with group they have right now. |

4/19 practice: http://www.nba.com/lakers/multimedia/0708video.html (9 minutes, 5 seconds)
Kobe, Pau, and Phil interviewed.
I liked Kobe's dinner analogy.
In the background of Kobe's interview you can watch Mihm and DJ working on their Js. DJ also spent some time on his post moves, saw a couple Kareem shots in the arsenal. _________________

Well, Gasol played 27 games as a Laker.
We won 22. That's 81%. _________________
