12 Weeks in the books, 11 games down, we're into the home stretch where the playoff positions and awards will be decided. So who is the NFL MVP for the 2006 season?

Let's start by looking at the past 4 years:

2002
• Rich Gannon, QB - Oakland Raiders (Associated Press)
2003
• Peyton Manning, QB - Indianapolis Colts
• Steve McNair, QB - Tennessee Titans (Associated Press - tie)

2004
• Peyton Manning, QB - Indianapolis Colts (Associated Press)
2005
• Shaun Alexander, RB - Seattle Seahawks (Associated Press)

In 2002, when Gannon won the MVP, the Raiders went to the SuperBowl and Gannon broke a number of passing records.
Quote:

# NFL season record for pass completions (418 in 2002)
# NFL season record for 300+ yard passing games (10 in 2002)
# NFL season record for consecutive 300+ yard passing games (6 in 2002)

In 2003, Peyton Manning and Steve McNair:
Quote:

Manning threw for 4,267 yards and 29 touchdowns during the regular season, assisting his team to a 12-4 record despite having a defense that ranked only 20th in the NFL in points allowed (336)

Quote:

McNair threw for 24 TDs, only 7 INTs and ran for 4 more scores, while the Titans went 12-4

In 2004:
Quote:

Manning had one of the greatest regular seasons in NFL history, putting up 4,557 yards, a 121.1 quarterback rating, and 49 touchdowns, surpassing the record for TD passes in a season (48) held by Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino for two decades. Also led the Colts to a 12-4 record.

In 2005:
Quote:

Alexander set the record for touchdowns in a season, 28. He also won his first NFL rushing title with 1,880 yards. Seahawks went 13-3

Over the last 4 years, you can look at the winners and say they set records (Alexander, Manning, and Gannon) and they won games and division titles.

Now you look at the candidates for this season:

LaDainian Tomlinson

Stats:
229 rushes, 1146 yards, 5.0 YPC, 21 TDs
48 catches, 456 yards, 9.5 YPC, 3 TDs
2/3 passing, 20 yards, 2 TDs

He's scored 24 TDs himself this season, racking up 1602 All-Purpose Yards. He is the most valuable player of the highest scoring offense (by more than 4 points) in the NFL, led by a 1st year starter (who has been playing great though). He has scored more TDs himself than 19 NFL offenses. You add in his passing TDs, and that number goes up to 21.

Over the last 7 games, he's scored 21 TDs, and should he keep anything close to that pace, say 2 TDs per game over the next 5 games, he will SHATTER Alexander's record. He's on pace for a 1600 yard season running the ball, 700 yards receiving, which will come to about 2300 yards All-Purpose (The NFL record is 2690 set by Derrick Mason who was a KR/PR as well in 2000).

The biggest stat for LT though, 9-2. 1st place in the AFC West, 2 game lead on DEN and KC.

Peyton Manning

Stats:
244/379 - 64.4%
2964 yards (2nd in NFL)
21 TDs/6 INTs
100.2 QB Rating

The perennial MVP candidate. One of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the game not because of what he does after the snap, but because of what he allows his coaches to do before the snap. Tom Moore gives Manning a number of plays that he can choose to run at the line, 2-3 plays, with at least one run or pass play, also giving him the freedom to decide which way to run on a running play. His mind is his greatest weapon, and he has an above-average NFL arm when it comes to accuracy and velocity (ie that throw to Wayne in Denver that was RIGHT there).

His team is 10-1 in the regular season, and while he's never been a great post-season performer, the MVP is a regular season award is it not? At times, he can be overhyped, but he is without a doubt one of the top 2 QBs in the league, and a top 5 player.

Drew Brees

Stats:
275/413-66.6%
3463 yards (1st in NFL)
19 TDs/10 INTs
97.8 QB Rating

A darkhorse candidate, but a candidate nonetheless. He is the league leader in passing yards and has defied the odds after people (myself included) doubted he could be effective after injuring his shoulder during last season's finale. His passing yardage is second all-time through a team's first 11 games, second only to Rich Gannon's MVP season 3535 yards.

The Saints are 7-4 and in first place when noone thought they would be. The man is a flat-out winner and he's got the Saints in for a playoff run. Though I'm guessing after Aaron Brooks, anyone can look good. mhihi I joke, I joke. His 510 yards in a single game is something like the 6th highest performance of all time (even though his team lost). The Saints have been a low, but they are playoff bound in all likelihood, and Brees is a candidate.

Tom Brady

[u]Stats:[/u
221/367-60.2%
2565 yards
20 TDs/11 INTs
87.1 QB Rating

Not much to say about this guy that hasn't been said. He doesn't have the numbers that his peers do, but he is the heart and soul of the Patriots. He's got that fire you love to see, and apparently Mike Vick ain't got nothing on him, ask Urlacker. man10 . His team is winning, and his team is 8-3 having just beat the 9-2 Bears.

Feel free to add your own candidates as well, I'm going to add a couple more up there, including a couple of defensive players.

Right now, my winner is without a doubt LT though.

I'd like to see either LT or Brees get it. LT has been amazing this season, but who expected the Saints to get this many wins? If they win their division I think Brees deserves the MVP, big if though.

LT is oblitirating the all time scoring record baring an injury while his team is racking up wins. I'm not sure how he doesn't get it. Not looking past Peyton, I realize he is the true competition to LT but if I were to pick a QB I'de take Brees. The Saints were a horrible team last year, new coach, new QB, new RB and now there 7-4. This team has been sparked by the great QB play, that's why there 7-4 right now.

L.T hands down.

I like that he doesn't think he is bigger than the game.

Thus far... i say Peyton Manning....

You take Peyton off the Colts... they are FAR worse then if you take the other players off their respective teams.

But stat wise... LT is doing special things.

Peyton/LT is my Co-MVP's

Props to the broncos fan for the SD love!

LT deserves it for sure. World Class Running Back. Although Lorenzo Neal deserves credit for like 400 of those rushing yeards.

LT for carrying the Chargers on his back.

LT for wreaking havoc on NFL defenses.

LT for singlehandedly getting my Fantasy Team off to a 10-2 start. jam2

The title of this thread is all wrong.
There's no debate, it's L.T. unanimous MVP.

3 weeks ago, I had a huge arguement in favour of Tiki Barber winning it.
But due to circumstances in and out of his control. It has to be Tomlinson.

Best player on a team with a 1st year QB and still leading them to a Division Crown.
Running for TD's, Passing for TD's, throwing for TD's. Hell, put him at FS and I'll bet he'll interecept a pass and run it back for a TD.

LT is the obvious choice.
