Sources told ESPN's Peter Gammons that the former A's pitcher has agreed to a seven-year contract from the Giants. The $126 million deal averages approximately $18 million per season. Zito will be formally introduced by the Giants this afternoon.
The deal, agreed to late Wednesday night, includes an $18 million option for 2014 that could increase the value to $144 million, an unidentified source told The Associated Press.
Gammons reports that Zito picked the Giants over the Rangers, Mets, Yankees and Mariners. In additon, sources told Gammons that the Yankees never made a formal offer.
Zito is 102-63 in 222 career starts, including a 16-10 mark with a 3.83 ERA in 34 starts this year before becoming a free agent.
Zito / Cain / Lowry / Sanchez / Lippcum / Morris...... _________________

Dodgers can have Schmidt...
That rotation will be sick if everyone stays healthy.

Giants Sign Barry Zito
UPDATE: Peter Gammons is reporting that the Giants have signed Zito for seven years and approximately $126MM. The deal is said to include an $18MM option for 2014. The Yankees did not make a formal offer. San Francisco's rotation now looks like this:
Matt Cain
Barry Zito
Noah Lowry
Matt Morris
Jonathan Sanchez
UPDATE: T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports that the Rangers have been told Zito has rejected their six-year, $80MM offer. A source told Sullivan that the Rangers expect Zito to sign with San Francisco.
The Yankees talked to the Giants about Randy Johnson, but Brian Sabean was not interested. Word is that Johnson is not old enough for San Francisco. _________________

3:16 - You dont think that, 7 years 126 million is too much?
I mean, thats Santana type money. Your guys could have got Matsuzaka for less money than that. _________________

I think it's a lot, but when compared to the contracts signed by Schmidt, Suppan, and all the Chicago sCrUBS signings this year, it's comparative.
Matsuzaka might be good, but Zito is proven in this league. He's also as durable as they come (never missed a start in his career). Has a Cy Young, low ERA in the AL, which means it should drop in the NL, and he'll be pitching half his games in pitcher friendly SF.
SF off-season has been horrible up until this morning. The fan base needed this! The GM needed this! I'm excited. He was the prize FA this off-season.
Also, this might mean Bonds doesn't get his contract (nothing has been signed yet). I really hope they don't sign him to that rich contract. That's a MUCH worse contract then the Zito one. _________________

It's not like there is a salary cap. Who cares how much he was signed for. The signing is significant, the contract is not important as far as I'm concerned. |

Don't forget 13 game winner Matt Cain. Had a 7 game stretch when he was clearly the best pitcher in the league last year.......... as a rookie. |
Something around five 1 hitters, too. _________________

wow...possibly the worst signing of this offseason.
There's no way in HELL Zito will live up to that ridiclous contract. Zito's an overrated pitcher that's riding his reputation from his days with the "Big 3." I mean, 1.40 WHIP during the regular season and a 12+ ERA in round 2 of the postseason = 7 years, $127 million?
OK, I'll cut you Giant fans some slack - I mean, you did grossly overpay for someone who's going to be nothing more than a solid #3 pitcher in a few years, but hey, your team doesn't have any other holes to fill, right?
The only guys that benefited from this signing are Boras and Zito (and the Mets, Mariners, and every other team in the running for Zito that avoided forking over ridiculous amounts of money for him).
Enjoy the excitement while it lasts, because it won't be long before you're calling for Sabean's head for overpaying Zito. _________________

I think it's a lot, but when compared to the contracts signed by Schmidt. |
Give me a break. That contract given to him was just a three-year deal.
But yeah, the Giants do have a solid rotation. |

damn I had no idea you posted here too. You keep showing up on all my favorite sites! LGK, DB, and now here
back to topic - I'm not sure which signing was dumber...the Bonds signing or the Zito signing. Actually, it has to be the Zito signing. The Giants' brass really have no clue what they're doing _________________

Check out my ( not me ) new Barry Zito Giants projection over at RotoAuthority.com.
The new ZiPS projection for Zito calls for a 4.00 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 216 innings.
Haven't seen Zito's PECOTA quote yet but I'm sure it's forthcoming. |

Ever since Kevin Brown, I've shied away from pitchers + enormous contracts. I'm sure Zito will tear up the NL for a bit, but for 7 years when the Giants have tons of holes to fill? I don't know... _________________

| Zito has the most starts in the majors since the begining of the 2000 season. Dude rarely gets hurt. Give this guy some run support and he'll get 17-20 wins. This still doesn't solve their bullpen and closer problems. |
