I don't know what to tell you to eat because I don't know any vegetarian meals that contain the proper amount of protein and other macro nutrients that won't require supplements.

Yeah, vegetarian diets for athletes are especially tough. I'd recommend a nutritionist or MAYBE look around at some athletes who are vegetarians.

My brother is a vegetarian and a former powerlifter. I have no idea how he gets what his body needs, but he does eat a lot of cheese, nuts, and beans.

Andrew, I thought I knew of someone who might be able to help you. Here's an article written by Clarence Bass. He is "nearly" vegetarian. You might find it interesting and illuminating. He's known for being ridiculously shredded and he dominated a stress test when he was in his 60s. Here's a picture of him at 60:

Here's something on his nutrition:

ugh! so frustrating. I've been working out a lot in the past couple months, but I've had the flu for three days now and have barely moved or eaten anything. All that hard work, down the drain. man5

How long does it take for built up muscles to shrink again?

I really wanna hit the gym up but I dont think its a good idea since I have a sore throat, body aches etc..

Wait a few more days. Some used to think that decompensation occurred as quickly as three or four days, but the HIT trainers have shown that that's utter crap. Some people don't even recover that quickly, much less recover and then decompensate. If it's been a couple of weeks, you've probably lost a little bit, but the good news is that you re-gain more quickly than you gained in the first place.

Wow, thanks man! I can tell I have lost a little weight because I haven't been eating as much as usual. Thats really good news to hear about re-gaining muscle quicker. I am going to start working out again as soon as my symtpms go away.

Friday is supposed to be a beautiful day in So Cal so I really want to feel good enough to go work out on the beach. I swim about a mile or so (maybe more) and then run back to my house. It's a great workout and there should be a buncha girls down there too, so I better be feeling better. man5

MadMax, you have to thank muscle memory. :) Gaining back is a lot easier than gaining the first time, especially if the break is really short.

Well it's been almost 6 days since I haven't done any working out and I feel miserable atm.

I had to go to Urgent Immediate Medical Care this morning because I had such a high fever and sore throat. The Doc confirmed that I have a bacterial infection (gross) in my throat, and he prescribed me to Azithromycin(one pill for 5 days), which has already helped the swelling go down in my throat, although I keep getting random 101 fevers. I'm really hurting right now.

Tomorrow is going to be a glorious day too. I was looking foward to my beach excursion, but chances are I will be in bed feeling awful still. Whats really killing me is my loss of appetite. I've literally only eaten one full meal in three days. I try to eat but it just isn't appealing at all. I mean, I'm glad my beer belly went away, but its makes everything worse that I cannot eat.

Ok, venting time is over. I'm going to watch the game in bed tonight (should be a blast) Hope everyone else is doing ok and working out still. man5

Okay I'll share my workout if anyone cares. This is for those who definitely want to get cut--and for those who are worried that they will gain weight and get too big.

*Now granted, I don't know the names and all the technical terms, so I'll try to describe the best I can.

Last summer this was what I did:

Day 1 (Chest, Triceps):
-2 sets of cable pull for your pecs (with reps going from 12,10,8,6,4,2--you do this in order and after that another set).
-2 sets of pushups (12,10,8,6,4,2)
-bench sloped bench presses (this is for the lower part of your chest, especially for those of you who have man titties, this is a great workout)
-3 sets of triceps pulls using weight, cables, or machines (usually in reps of 12)
-pushups with your arms behind your shoulder using a bench. (3 sets of 12--this works on your Tris)

Day 2 (Biceps, Back):
-3 sets of bicep curls with reps of 12 (standing)
-another 3 sets of bicep curls while on sloped chair
-that machine pull that works on your back (sorry I am so bad with names), do 3 sets of these in 15 reps
-find the other machine where you sit down and pull horizontally and works on your back, do another 3 sets in 15 reps

Day 3 (Abs):
-on a mat, 30 sit ups and 40 crunches (do these twice).
-leg pull while sitting down (the move that works on your abs) with a preferred weight on your legs, do 15 reps and you're done. Really tiring, but a GREAT and effective workout for your abs.
-on a mat, get in a pushup stance, except your not on your hands, but your forearms are holding you up. Stay in this position for about 2 minutes. It may seem like nothing but it is very excruciating and great for your stomach.

Day 4 (Run 5 kilos.)
-Go outside and just run. It doesn't have to be 5 kilos. Just run (or jog) outside as much as you can.
-this really is your resting day in between workouts, but it's better to run.

Day 5 (Repeat)

*Every workout before or after it's preferred that you run on the treadmill for about 15-20 minutes to get your heart rate going.

And then I do this repeatedly. I did this for about a month or two, and I lost about 24 pounds. I was pretty overweight, but I followed this workout and ate right and stayed healthy and became very toned and cut. Keep away from the junk food, seriously. If anything, eating right is more important than working out if you wanna lose weight. And for those who do not wanna lift weights because they think they'll get too big, don't worry, this is pretty much a myth. Lifting weight is ESSENTIAL to cutting weight and burning fat off your body.

After a workout, consume about 15-20g (or 30g if you wanna get bigger) of protein. Look for foods like eggs, fish, nuts, and lean breast chicken. Don't worry about consuming too much carbs, they are good for you (don't listen to those fools who tell you to go on carb diets).

Now of course, this was all last year. Now I'm in college and I've had less time to exercise. A GREAT tip for you guys, you should try getting the Perfect Pushups. I've been on it for about 13 days and already lost about 6.5 lbs (I got pretty overweight this year).

That's good. I won't go to workout today because the Lakers lost and I'm upset. My boyfriend got back home and when he'll wake up he's gonna have to cheer me up. :(

Got a link? I've never heard of it. My first thought is that there's no quick fix and it's not typically a problem of loss of muscle tension unless you're old and sedentary. Double chins are fat...so lose fat over your whole body and see the results.

Until trodgers replied, I didn't know what you mean. You have a better chance of getting rid of it by doing squats. You can't spot reduce. That's why those who do crunches and are fat, don't get a 6 pack. You have to lose fat overall.

My workout for yesterday:
Bent Over Barbell Row
10x12
15x12
10x12
10x12
Lat Pull Down
40x12
60x12
40x12
40x12
Seated Cable Row(after the trainer used the whole rack... me=heartbroken jk)
35x12
35x12
35x12
Standing EZ Bar Curl
10x12
10x10
0x12(Yep, I choked :P)
Preacher Curl
30x12
30x12
30x12

30 minutes of sprints.

I had to do one arm dumbbell rows and incline dumbbell curls too but I was too tired and my hands were hurting. I need some frigging gloves cuz my hands look now like I go and dig every day. :P

Eff. I'm freaking sore after my first week of weight training [squats, bench, clean, etc.] But I already see improvement.

From what I heard, drink the protein stuff and ice after, and you won't be sore?

^^

Lots of breathing in and out during workout and drink plenty of water throughout it also. Stretch between reps a must. Should help avoid most soreness.

One of the big myths was that stretching after working out would reduce soreness, but it has been debunked. Some people get sore and some don't. You should especially expect it if you're getting back to working out after a layoff. I get very sore sometimes and don't get sore after some very hard workouts. I think the most important way to reduce some soreness is to warm up sufficiently before working out.

You can't just get into a car and be going 100 mph...you have to work it up to that. Think about working out that way in terms of recovery and soreness.

found a link.

http://www.wellbeing-information.com/double-chin-exercises.html
A simple double chin exercise that you can do every day without any effort at all is just before you go to sleep at night. Lie on your side, and then as you put your head on the pillow, tilt your head back so that you stretch your neck.

Remember gently is the key and only at an angle that is comfortable. At no time should there be any discomfort. During the night your body will relax, but over a period of time those few minutes every night before you go to sleep will make a difference. Gradually you will find that tilting your head back will become a part of your sleep pattern.

Hardly a double chin exercise, but none the less very beneficial is the chin slap, yes the one you see the aging actress do in the movies! Just slap under your chin with the back of your hand, starting slowly and gently, then increasing speed. do this for a couple of minutes each time and two or three times a day.

I see. Like I wrote previously, that's a question of muscle tone and may have some benefit for a 60 year old sedentary person, but not for a teen or tween. The problem is fat and that has to be lost over your whole body.

Got it, so i would have to lose all body fat for the chin to reduce. I want to lose about 7 to 10lbs in 2 to 3 months, would running 1 hour a day on the mill do it or longer of course with a healthy diet.

Well, not lose "all" body fat...you'll just lose it all over your body. For whatever reasons, some people store body fat in the places they do. Sometimes it's harder to lose weight from certain areas even if you lose in other places. That aside, Adding an hour of work on the treadmill a couple of times a week and a healthy diet should easily let you hit 7-10 pounds in 2-3 months, probably in one.

I advise you to buy non-adjustable dumbbells because they're better. If you really want adjustable dumbbell weights, don't buy those for lazy people, but those who actually have that screwing thing. The weights on the DBs for lazy people fall off. A friend bought some and they're crap or so he says. He returned them of course. lol

^ It LOOKS like it's two bars, 8 plates, all 5# each so it's 25# per bar if you do it all up. The spin/lock and York bars are all good quality. You might be able to put all the weight on one bar, making it 45#.

Fruits, veggies. :)

Apples and peanut butter is one of my favorites. Other than that, it depends how the snack fits into your overall scheme. A little slab of cheese, a real serving of Sun Chips, 4 Snickers minis (this is actually a 'go' on South Beach).

My brain isn't working right now. I'll come back to this.
