I was leafing through this thread and there was mention of Hendrix's rendition of the National Anthem at Woodstock. While his version was groundbreaking, I feel Marvin Gaye's performance of it at the 1983 NBA All Star Game at The Forum was just as vital and refreshing.

It infuses a forlorn, soulful feel to a patriotic song. The crowd ends up clapping to the rhythmn in the final verses. You can see a smile on George "Iceman" Gervin's face. Julius "Dr. J" Erving was so inspired that he played so well getting the MVP honors. Sadly, there was a big backlash against Gaye that it kept him from performing on TV again.
