SOURCES: MAVS TO HIRE CARLISLE
By PETER VECSEY and TIM BONTEMPS

May 3, 2008 -- Rick Carlisle won't be reunited with former boss Donnie Walsh with the New York Knicks .

Sources told The Post last night that the former Pacer and Piston coach, who interviewed with Walsh for the Knick coaching job Wednesday, has agreed to terms with the Mavericks to replace Avery Johnson.

Johnson, who was 194-70 during the regular season and 23-24 in the playoffs over 31/2 seasons in Dallas, was fired after the Mavericks fell to the Hornets in five games in the first round of the playoffs - the second straight first-round exit for the team.

Maverick owner Mark Cuban wasted little time in his search for a new coach. After firing Johnson on Wednesday, Cuban quickly moved to interview, and then hire, Carlisle.

The 49-year-old Carlisle ran the Pistons from 2001-03, going 100-64 in the regular season and 12-15 in the playoffs. He also was named the 2001-02 NBA Coach of the Year.

After Carlisle was fired by Detroit and replaced by Larry Brown following the 2002-03 season, he was hired by Walsh to coach the Pacers. In four seasons with Indiana, Carlisle was 181-147 in the regular season and 18-17 in the playoffs.

Carlisle was fired by Indiana after the team went 35-47 in 2006-07, missing the playoffs for the first time since the 1996-97 season.

Good move by the Mavericks, I called it earlier as well, if the Mavericks are looking to improve defensively then Carlisle was a great option for them. I can already see Carlisle doing a lot of great things with this team.

I'm surprised they're not using Paul Westphal!

He's got the experience plus he's been to the finals with Phoenix...

Good move. We'll see what they can do next year.

Always liked Carlisle. I could see players getting along with him, unlike that 24/7 screaming general. And he likes defense.

Good choice for Mavs. Being a defensive minded coach, Carlisle will increase the likelihood of their success in the postseason. However, i don't think that they will be one of the favorites with this roster. Change is a must for them.

He is a good coach, but I don't believe he'll succeed in Dallas. The Mavericks need a change in personnel--more passing and transition basketball. They are about to become a half-court, plotting team. This may seem counter-intuitive with Jason Kidd, but he's becoming a half-court guard. Dirk has been the most steady iso player in the league in the past three seasons.

Carlisle's system will not change that. They will have exactly one shot--next season--to do something with this group. They need to break them up.

Mark Cuban said something to Steven A. Smith in the summer of 2006. He said: "I was afraid we'd look up and see our big three were all 32-36 years old and we'd be stuck with a bad team."

He had the chance at this roster:

PG - Steve Nash / Devin Harris
SG - Micheal Finley / Jerry Stackhouse
SF - Josh Howard / Greg Buckner
PF - Dirk Nowitzki /
C - DeSagana Diop / Brandon Bass

That's a damn good team and he'll have to live it down for the rest of his life that he didn't re-sign Nash and find a way for Howard, Stackhouse, and FInley to co-exist.

^^ If it does get done, it's a good move. Carlisle preaches defense, I wonder what else the Mavs will change..

I think that would be extremely expensive and not smart. Unless they were able to make a trade that would give them financial benefits trading Finley (who was on the downside of his career) and a SG prospect, so they couldve kept Nash.

Good choice by the Mavs. He'd better get to work quick, their window of opportunity is closing fast.

Why in the world would he bother interviewing for NY? Take the Mavs job, it's a good team in need of a new coach and system.

He's a good fit but I don't think he'll be able to do miracles with the roster they currently have in place. Cuban has to get the blender out and shake the team up.

It's official. That said, I think they'll stick with the team they have minus a few guys like Dampier and Terry.
