UPDATE 7-03 #3: OC Register Bynum Report is in.......GOOD NEWS!!!!

Andrew Bynum did indeed receive medical clearance from doctors Thursday and will begin training in earnest by mid-July. His agent, David Lee, said the Lakers center did not have any pain or swelling in his surgically repaired left knee and will be ready to go by training camp in October.

http://lakers.freedomblogging.com/

UPDATE 7-03 #2: There was a long delay with Bynum's agent not getting back to the OC Register.....which was causing some concern if there was bad news instead of good about Bynum's knee. GUMBY TO THE RESCUE!!! He posted the following to reassure us......

From what I've heard it should be good news, whenever it comes out. I can't elaborate cause don't know the details but will def be positive.

UPDATE 7-03: There is supposed to be new Bynum news coming at OC Register any minute......

http://lakers.freedomblogging.com/2008/07/03/bynum-to-receive-good-or-bad-news-this-morning/

UPDATE 6-06: LA Times article on Bynum and the Finals.....

http://www.latimes.com/sports/printedition/la-sp-lakersfyi6-2008jun06,0,7904789.story

UPDATE 5-21: Good News from Gumby about the surgery today!!!

I hear the surgery went well. They didn't find any issues or any problems. Cleaned out the knee and areas that were causing the problems, so everything is fine now. Will prob have physical therapy for 2 and a half months or so. But no career or life ending issues like some of the you all believed.

Quote:
Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today in New York, it was announced today by the team.

The procedure, which took 30 minutes and was performed by Dr. David Altchek, consisted of removing some cartilage debris and smoothing some rough spots on the underside of the kneecap.

Bynum is expected to make a full recovery by the start of training camp.

UPDATE 5-18: LA Times update is......

The Lakers announced today that center Andrew Bynum will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee this week.

The procedure is scheduled for Wednesday in New York and involves cleaning some rough spots and fraying on the underside of his kneecap. It will be performed by Dr. David Altchek.

The team will release a report of the surgery and estimated timeline of return on Wednesday.

Bynum has been out since Jan. 13 with a bone bruise in the knee and a subluxation of the kneecap -- a brief dislocation that popped back into place.

UPDATE 5-17: Gumby said about Bynum....

Having a scope either tues or wed. from what i have heard.

UPDATE 5-07 #2: Emplay posted and said....

i haven't been keeping up with the thread - at the game.

interesting news today - I expected arthroscopic surgery in about 2 weeks - there were actually signs of improvement - so that's been delayed for 3-4.

In a way it's good news in that there's hope he won't need to get cut - but I still think eventually he goes under the knife.

UPDATE 5-07: As per BSPN......

Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum might undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee if there is no significant improvement in the next three to four weeks

Lakers spokesman John Black said Bynum was examined Wednesday by Dr. Steven Gecha in Princeton, N.J. Black said the team was told there had been some improvement in the 20-year-old center's knee, but Gecha's recommendation was exploratory surgery if there wasn't more in the upcoming weeks.

"I'm not surprised about it," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said, adding that it was only recently Bynum had said he felt pain-free.

"That's why the doctor said, 'Let's wait three weeks,' " Jackson said before the Lakers faced the Utah Jazz in Game 2 of their Western Conference semifinal series Wednesday night. "It's still touch and go. We'll address this more later."

Bynum hasn't played since injuring his knee Jan. 13 in the third quarter of a 100-99 victory over Memphis at Staples Center. He averaged 13.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots in 35 games.

The Lakers estimated the day after Bynum was injured that he would be sidelined 8-to-12 weeks. But Jackson said on April 21 that a return this season was remote, and Bynum said much the same thing last week. A knee specialist examined Bynum in New York on April 10 and declined to clear him for practice.

UPDATE 5-2 #2: A report from a blog along the same lines as the Times report below....

Andrew Bynum and Lakers coach Phil Jackson confirmed pretty much what everyone had expected anyway, and that was that Bynum won't play again this season.

Bynum has been out since Jan. 13 with a left kneecap injury that the Lakers originally said would keep the 20-year-old center out a minimum of 12 weeks.

Bynum said Friday he was told by the doctors he would be out ``four to six months'' before he might be able to play.

Bynum indicated that he's 11 days away from the four-month mark.

When asked after the Lakers' practice Friday if he would play this season, Bynum responded by saying, ``No, I don't think so.''

Bynum said the best scenario would be the Lakers reaching the NBA Finals -- the earliest day it could start would June 3, the latest June 5 -- and that he might be able to play then.

But he also indicated that he probably wouldn't be in shape if that were to happen.

Bynum missed the last 46 regular-season games and all four Western Conference first-round playoff games against the Denver Nuggets.

When asked if Bynum might not play again this season, Jackson said:

``I was pretty much resigned to that fact since March on.''

UPDATE 5-2: LA Times says Bynum return for playoffs doubtful.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakerep3-2008may03,0,5321253.story

UPDATE 4-28 #2: Here is Gumby's reply to the Times comment below....

That last article is off base.

The fact that Drew is not traveling with the team is a good sign. They have not 100 percent shut him down for the season or said he will not be able to play in an upcoming series. That being said they are keeping him home while the team travels so he can receive the most treatment/rehab possible. If you were trying to get him back this season it would make no sense to have him travel with the team and lose valuable days of rehab...also remember what happened last flight he took with the team, no need for it.

UPDATE 4-28: LA Times comment today......

The latest confirmation that Andrew Bynum isn't close to returning: He is not with the team in Denver.

There is only a remote possibility that Bynum, out since Jan. 13 because of a knee injury, will return to the Lakers this season.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakers28apr28,1,2335479.story

UPDATE 4-23: Yahoo article with lots about Bynum......

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=AitpkQdBC8wdz6RyAaIpbyG8vLYF?slug=bynumthemissingpieceinth&prov=tsn&type=lgns

UPDATE 4-18 #2: Gumby's reply to the LG post below about Bynum.....

If you are to see him this season it will WCF or later as they have stated.

As for surgery, its too early to speculate on him def having or even needing it and as far as i know no decision has been made saying he will have surgery.

There are a cpl things that don't make sense about that guys post. First off if he 100% needed surgery as Phil supposedly stated, they would not play him for the WCF and then make him have surgery after. He wouldn't play at all so the statement that hes going to rehab to try to play in the WCF then have surgery after the season doesn't make too much sense. Too risky and pretty stupid to chance it with your future franchise player.

Secondly... If he was 100% having surgery it would be HIM telling Phil that not Phil telling him. Bynum's rehab has involved people outside of the Laker organization (ie. the doctor in NY) and therefor Bynum would know results or what he is facing before the Lakers org. and def. before the coach being Phil plays no part in his day to day rehab and im pretty sure doesn't accompany him to doctor visits cause he does have a team to coach. So that doesn't make much sense either.

UPDATE 4-18: cvballa posted today @ LG......

As I have posted on here before, I have some I know who works in marketing for the Lakers and word out of an event that was put on last night goes something like this:

Phil and Bynum were having a conversation right next to my contact during the event last night. Phil apparently said to Bynum "You know you are going to need surgery right?" Bynum came back with the fact that he wishes they had told him sooner. Phil said they thought he could just rehab it and it would be ok. But Phil also told Bynum that he would be 100% ready for the start of next season.

From what I gather he will keep rehabing until the end of the season in hopes of him coming back 80-90% during the playoffs. But he will have offseason surgery to get him back to where he really needs to be.

Just an FYI, I got the call a couple minutes ago. He was shocked they had the conversation right next to him.

UPDATE 4-12: Go watch the 5 minute Bynum media session video....lots of info.

http://www.nba.com/lakers/news/080411bynum.html

UPDATE 4-11 #2: Here is an update of what Phil just said...copied from lakerfan2's post.

A little recap of Philosophy 101:

-Drew's Subluxation (Dislocation) of the Patella (Kneecap) is healed fine.
-Still worried about knee inflammation (Swelling) and irritation that bothers him.
-The kneecap irritation is know as Chondromalacia
-Monitoring his progress.
-Phil doesn't want give definitive timetable for Drew, but didn't rule him out of playoffs just yet.

UPDATE 4-11: LA Times has new info on Bynum. Seems his knee swelled again after the plane ride on the road trip. The Lakers wanted him to wait until next week to get it checked by a specialist in NY but Bynum's advisors wanted it looked at ASAP....which we know it was the other day. Phil seemed to scoff at the idea of Bynum being out for the playoffs. Read the article....as this was just the major points.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakerep11apr11,1,4810891.story

UPDATE 4-10: Lakers center Andrew Bynum had not been cleared for full practices or to play and is doubtful for the start of the playoffs.

There is no specific date set for his return, the Lakers said today.

Bynum was examined by a knee specialist in New York on Wednesday. "Andrew will continue with his therapy program and workouts with the Lakers' training staff and will continue to be monitored until he can return to playing status," Dr. David Altchek said.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-lakerep11apr11,1,4250584.story

UPDATE 4-9 #2: At the Lakers Practice report for today...Jackson said that Andrew Bynum is scheduled to fly to New York today to undergo a check-up that will go a long way for determining whether or not Andrew is able to practice this Saturday in preparation for a possible Sunday return.

http://www.nba.com/lakers/multimedia/0708video.html

UPDATE 4-9: Article basically reiterating that Bynum might play this Sunday.

http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/51868/20080409/bynum_could_play_sunday/

UPDATE 4-8 #2: Watch video of Phil discussing Bynum possibly playing this weekend!!

http://cbs2.com/sports/lakers.andrew.bynum.2.695274.html

UPDATE 4-8: Andrew Bynum graduated from playing one-on-one with former players to going up against a current player.

Assistant coaches Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw took turns against Bynum on Saturday and Sunday, and Chris Mihm went one-on-one with him Monday after practice.

"He's getting a little activity," Jackson said. "He looked pretty good. He's a big kid, he's strong, he's running a lot better. He's still a little bit short [with his shot]. Just a little bit."

"We'll watch him progress along and see if he wants to join the action [in practice] here at the end of the week, see what it looks like. He did some practicing [Monday], but it's not contact, not moving around through traffic and that kind of stuff. But it's close."

http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakerep8apr08,1,7175987.story

UPDATE 4-5: When asked if Bynum might miss the rest of the regular season, Jackson said, "Oh, sure, there's a very good possibility."

Bynum sounded a little more hopeful.

"At this point, I'm trying to get back a couple of games before [playoffs] just so I can get, like, a tune-up," he said. "The last two games, that's the closest I can get back. And I have a good chance of practicing right before the playoffs with my team, get a bunch of hard practices in."

http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakerep5apr05,1,5799725.story

UPDATE 4-4: GUMBY said today about Bynum....

"He's not going to play on the road trip, stick to the last cpl games as to when you'll see him actually log minutes."

"Word is that he has been wearing a brace for a few days and is responding very well to it. Not too sure about full on contact practices."

UPDATE 4-3: Bynum is finally done with the anti-gravity treadmill and has graduated to on-court work. :JAM2:

The unofficial reality with regard to Andrew Bynum is this: He’s hankering to play the last couple of regular-season games, yet the firmer projection is that he merely wants — probably with the help of a three-day layoff before the post season — for his left knee to be right for the start of the serious second season.

http://www.ocregister.com/articles/lakers-gasol-bryant-2010602-marc-team

UPDATE 4-1: Team Spokesman John Black informed the media members at practice today that Center Andrew Bynum ran on the court for the first time since sustaining a knee injury against the Memphis Grizzlies on January 13th.

Bynum’s rehab has included running on the team’s Alter-G treadmill, which can regulate a percentage of the users body weight.

Bynum has been increasing the percentage of his body weight on a regular basis, but today was the first time that he has ran at 100% since the injury occurred.

“He’s doing good. He did more work today than he’s done up to this point. We just push him to a point where he’s really active and see how he reacts to it,” said Head Coach Phil Jackson.

Jackson plans to have Bynum accompany the team on it’s next road trip to get back into the flow of the team.

“One. So he can stay abreast of what we’re doing from day-to-day. We’re putting new things in as we go along through the season, so you’ve got to know that. Two. So he can go through shoot-arounds and practices. There’s a sequence of days that we’ll be doing that and those are all participation that you get yourself ready to play. Three. So he can get with his teammates and hang out with his teammates so he remembers their names.

http://my.lakers.com/blogs/

UPDATE 3-30: Andrew Bynum was told by Coach Phil Jackson he would accompany the team on a two-game trip next week, though he wouldn't necessarily play.

UPDATE 3-21: Kobe on Bynum's return....

Paging Dr. Bryant

On whether Andrew Bynum will play again this season:

"I'm pretty optimistic. In a perfect-case scenario, he'd get five games under his belt or something like that before the playoffs. But if it doesn't happen, we'll roll with it. In this system, it's easy for him to jump back in, go stand down there and not miss a beat. Especially at that center position, be our defensive anchor, change shots. It's not that difficult."

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/dailydime?page=dime-080322-23

UPDATE 3-20: LA Times says Bynum could now be back in 2 weeks from this Sunday!!! jam2

Bynum could now return two weeks from Sunday, Jackson said, which would give him up to six games with the Lakers before playoffs.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakerep20mar20,1,4941960.story

UPDATE 3-19: Gumby says....

No need to get all worried... The timetable for his return hasnt changed since a week ago. This is just a comment from Phil take it with a grain of salt. He was supposed to be back a game or 2 before the playoffs so theres no real change in time. Dont be too surprised if u see him log some minutes in the last 2 games.

UPDATE 3-18: ESPN says Bynum out until playoffs. That's a month from now...what I thought anyway.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3300705

UPDATE 3-17: Andrew Bynum has had no adverse reactions to the light treadmill work he began last week, which is important because there was some concern that he would have pain or swelling that might set him back. There remains some hope Bynum will get back in early April.

http://lakers.freedomblogging.com/2008/03/17/progress-albeit-minimal-for-ariza-bynum-gasol/

UPDATE 3-14 #2: Gumby's comment on bottom of page 16. Says he will be back around four weeks from today.

UPDATE 3-14: Emplay's comments about Bynum's shooting and dunking/progress on page 15!! Says his return not as soon as many here are speculating. man6

UPDATE 3-12: Phil said at practice report today that Bynum is shooting and dunking now!!! jam2

UPDATE 3-11: Bynum worked out on the new machine/treadmill for the first time for 20 minutes....

UPDATE 3-10: The Lakers have leased something called a Alter G Trainer to help guys like Andrew Bynum, Trevor Ariza, and Chris Mihm rehab with greater efficiency.....

UPDATE 3-08: Bynum may not return fot 1 month more or til playoffs (pg 10)......

UPDATE 3-07: Update on Bynum, Mihm and Ariza injuries in LA Times article today.....

http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakerep7mar07,1,6717230.story?ctrack=2&cset=true

UPDATE 3-02:
Bynum says in interview during the Mavs game that he still has "a bunch of swelling in there"!!

UPDATE 2-23:
Bynum said in his interview during the game that he should take another 4-6 weeks to return. He also said April 1 is the best case scenario!

I hope that is just because they are being extra slow and cautious because they are winning without him.

It seems Sky was right when he said he would return in April.

**********************

During the Laker's Pre Game Show interview with Phil....he said.......

"It doesn't look like Andrew will be back in the time table that was projected at first."

Then Sky said he will not be back until April. man6

Now there are reports that he is on track or only 1 week behind schedule. jam2

http://lakers.freedomblogging.com/2008/02/21/bynums-rehab-on-track/

Why such conflicting stories? freak2

Which do you all think is closest to the true timetable for his return? jam2

I heard them saying it on 570 before the game too. He might be back with a game or two before the playoffs if lucky.

As long as Andrew is back for the April 11th game vs. New Orleans...I'm not all that concerned. Three games to close the regular season, and then it's playoff time.

I understand that we want Bynum back for the playoffs, but we need his conditioning to be back. We need to know that his knee will be strong enough to hold up to battling with other bigs, especially Shaq.

I hope it's at least going to be early early early April.

I'd love for the Lakers to win it all this season, but getting a healthy Bynum back is much more important.

I'll give up a championship this season for a dynasty there after.

Maybe Bucher was right afterall and this is probably one of the reasons Kobe doesn't want to have surgery.

This is the right mentality.

Didn't we already know about this? IMO, they're just being EXTREMELY conservative with Bynum, and you know what, I can't disagree.

I think that seeing how Gasol has fit in so quickly, they're not as concerned about gelling as many people here. I think getting into game shape is a lot more important.

There's no reason to rush him. We are playing great. He should be ready for the playoffs.

remember his first initial injury report said 8-10 weeks i think? Mid march is 8 weeks.

thats a damn shame

but if tonight is any indication of what were capable of
(granted it is V. the hawks in a high emotion home game)

than take your time AB, and come back strong and ready to win

i hope Farmar gets him into yoga. i cant help but wonder, if Andrew were more
flexible, if this injury couldve been avoided or at least not as severe

i also hope he is a good swimmer. that will be a great way for him to maintain
his conditioning, as well as improve his flexibility and body fluidity.

GET WELL SOON AB. emphasis on the get well part, im not so worried about the soon

I disagree....I think he will come back with maybe at the end of march or early april....

remember his first initial injury report said 8-10 weeks i think? Mid march is 8 weeks.

Third year is a charm. With the injuries happening this year, it just seems like our time is next season and beyond.

Since this is Bynum were dealing with, there's no point to even rush him back for the playoffs.

thats why right now i think they are doing the opposite i think personally him not making the 8 weeks has nothing to do with the injury but more with the lakers taking zero chance of further injury

Bynum better be working on his game right now. Even though his knees might be messed he could still atleast work on his battle handling and his release there is no doubt that he could come back just messed up after this but as long as he can work hard right now he should be fine

With the way we're rolling right now, he can take all the time he needs... well, as long as he keeps working on his game (I heard he's been watching tapes of the great centers of old like Olajuwon, Kareem, etc.)

while that would explain them wanting kobe to get the surgery now which it would i believe

we honestly can win now and you never know what can happen next year hell you never know what can happen this year you have to take advantage of oppurtunities and right now we have an oppurtunity to win a title you don't pass those up no matter what.

i am for bringing along bynum slowly but making this a warm-up year would be a colossal mistake because i will reiterate you never know what can happen through the course of 82 games hell look whats happened this year
