Quote:
Hoopshype: Jason Kidd confirmed Friday that he is interested in playing for Team USA next summer, and Jerry Colangelo says that Kidd's agent has contacted him twice about the idea. Kidd says that he had a place on the team this past summer if he wanted it, but he didn't want to make the three-year commitment. Kidd, who won a gold medal in the Sydney Olympics in 2000, is 28-0 in international competition. NetsDaily.com

I'm all for it. We need a mix of vets, shooters, and explosive talent.

Kidd + Kobe = solid backcourt defense.

Great, I'd like it.

And yeah that would be some solid backcourt defense.

Excellent thinking by Kidd. We sorely needed veteran leadership at the point. Our chances for Gold with him and Kobe should be very good.

Kobe didnt play in Worlds...should he not be allowed to play in the Olympics? You want your best players out there. Period. Say what you want about Kidd, but he has proven age is nothing but a number. A 3 year commitment means nothing. A commitment to play for your country and bring back the gold, that means something. That is something Kidd can help make happen.

a three year commitment means nothing? how do you justify the other PG who's played all the years but when the olympics roll around... gets booted off because kidd wants to join in.

unfair... very unfair...

and i didn't say kobe shouldn't play, like i said a few players get a pass from not playing in the worlds because of injury (kobe along with a few others), also odom because of personal issues

if Kidd, Shaq, KG, and Duncan all said, "Hey we want to help our country win the gold." do you think it's a good enough reason to shut them down b/c a 3 year commitment? if we have a shot to put our best players out on the floor, that's what you do. you live in Canada, I live in the U.S. I want to see my country win the gold, period. I dont care about a "3 year commitment". if a player is commited to bringing gold back to my country, that's the only commitment I care about.

Beat me to it. bow

The 3 year commitment was more to only attract guys who absolutely want to be there. However if a talented player of the calibur of Kidd wants to play then you have to give him a shot IMO.

Yeah just what we need, another guard who can't hit a jumper. His free-throw finger kissing act is staying NBA only.

it wouldnt hurt, but its Paul's time. Kidd already had his turn

MY team

Howard/Amare/Miller
Bosh/Brand/Odom
Bron/Melo/Artest
KB24/Wade/Allen
Paul/Arenas/Billups

Has everything: defense, shooters, intensity, versatility, size, speed, strength, youth, experience, and winners.

Arenas didn't even make the roster last year and I take Kidd in this situation over Billups. The PG rotationi should be more in the lines of Kidd/Paul/Hinrich.

I know your affinity for Kidd will make it a long and fruitless discussion.

But when you have a PG like Chris Paul in the lienup you need to find a backup to complement Paul.

We donīt need Kidds passing, neither do we need his rebounding. USA didnīt lose games because of their lack of passing or rebounding or playmaking. they lost because their athleticism isnīt able to win games because of their lack of fundamentals. What Kidd can do is what Chris Paul can do.

Kidd is a great PG but in 2008 he will be 34 or 35 and seriously you must be kidding yourself if you think he would be better than Felton, Paul, Bibby, Billups and others for the European game.

Kidd is a great player. He is IMO the best PG in the league right now.

But team USA has always had great players. they just always failed to complement eachother.

Kidd is great but when Kobe is back, TeamUSA will look like

Wade
Kobe
James
Melo
Dwight

based on how they always played a SF at PF in the international games.
They have Paul, Arenas on the bench for back up guards.

seriously they are all better players than Kidd and the gap will only get bigger in the next 2 years.

Team USA needs players to complement eachother.

IMO Wade shouldnīt start, neother should Kidd or Paul. I would like to see Billups at point. defense and 3 point shot. with James and Kobe they have playmaking, leadership and everything.

when the only fault you can find in Kidd is his jumper, you know he's a great, COMPLETE, PG. why would they not need that? the guy is the ultimate team player. the ultimate leader. Kidd and Kobe in the backcourt? that's one of the best backcourts ever. anytime Kidd is mentioned you bring up his J. somehow Kidd got by for 10+ years in the league "w/o a J" and will be heading to the HOF when it's all over. you make it sound like the guy is a liability. he's one of the only players in the league who could go scoreless or score in single digits but control the entire pace of a game. believe it or not his rebounding and defense would help team USA a lot. they'd get a lot more fastbreak opportunities and easy buckets. one of the things you complained about during worlds was Hinrich's D. so tell me how Kidd playing D wouldnt help? I mean, when you complain about something obviously there is room for improvement there, right? I can sense the other cliche coming. "he's old. he's not as fast on D." blah blah.

Indeed his D would help. Hinrich was horrendous and he admited it. Against greece that one guard went off on him.

Kidds D would help but lets not forget we are talking about 2 years from now.
While his D would still not be bad Iīm definitely thinking there will be better defenders available.

I mmean we cannot take Kidd and Billups and Wade and Arenas and Chris Paul and Allen Iverson and .....

we have to make choices, period. And team USA needs less chiefs and more indians. When I have Hinrich at point, I take Kidd gladly. But when I can have Billups, I takehimover Kidd. He is clutch, has a ring, knows pressure as good as anyone, has the D, has the deadly Jumper...I mean what else do you want? fast break? you have Chris Paul, Wade, Kobe, James....

point is Kidd is a good option, but there are better options, case closed.

I actually think Kidd's game in this situation fits better then Billups. Billups is still going to want to score and that takes shots away from the other players. Kidd's mission is to pass, pass, pass and every blue moon as the 5th option may take a jumper. Kidd is effective without scoring and won't care if he only gets 4 or 6 pts a game.

the whole basis of this new program was to get guys committed to being with the team long term.

when you allow guys in late that just want to be there for the meaningful competitions, you screw the whole thing up.

no thanks jkidd. you're too late.

so Worlds wasnt meaningful? I love the "You didnt commit 3 years, no thanks." attitude. it's ridiculous. there are a bunch of players, Kobe included, that commited but didnt do a damn thing with team USA during Worlds. what is the difference? there's absolutely none. you wanna turn away the best PG in the game, and a proven winner/leader b/c he didnt "commit 3 years"? team USA would be fools to turn him down. it's obvious what we have didnt work. I'm waiting for some1 to explain to me how JKidd joining team USA would HURT our team.
