Roughing The Passer, 15 Yard Penalty, Automatic First Down

I can understand protecting the QB, but c'mon is this not the game of football. I mean if its a cheapshot/late hit then I can understand, but when you have DE scared to fully tackle a QB in fear of getting a flag that should indicate to the NFL that there is some sort of problem. These calls are almost as bad as the technicals in the NBA.

I kinda agree.

Common sense needs to prevail. Certain hits on a QB are just slightly late and the defensive player gets punished for making a great move that was only a fraction away from being a sack.

Its obvious when a player is and isnt trying to hurt the QB.

They need to change to rule to the facemask rule or the running/roughing the kicker rule. You have to first ease up on what is called, its ridiculous how just touching the QBs head, even if he moves it into your path is a penalty. But, they need to have the garden variety, 5 yarder, and then the roughing the passer 15 yard major for the stuff that is warrranted (late hits, high hits, and hits to the knees).

QBs are sitting ducks. The position leaves them vulnerable to hits no one else is subject to. QBs have no choice but to drop back and look at a bunch of foaming at the mouth, crazed, roided up, incredible athletes with one purpose in life - to put the QB out of the game. The harder the better.

Clean hits -- I'm all for it. But if the QB is wrapped up, I'm all for hearing a quick whistle.

I know there's a gray area and the refs lean towards the QBs safety just about every time. Because of the position, I have to agree with the NFLs stance on this one.

True, but when it starts affecting the game as much as it does, IE the Kiwi/Young play in the NYG/TEN game (I'm convinced that rule played a role) and the 'hit' by Jenkins (right?) on Hasselbeck last night that was a roughing the passer penalty for barely touching his helmet. There was also that play earlier in the season in the CIN/TB game where Justin Smith got the roughing the passer call on the Bucs QB where the Bucs went on to win the game. They need to protect the QB for sure, but its getting to the point where they're overblowing it IMO.

Yea I think the problem is when it starts impacting game as it has this season. I have seen many times bailed out of 3rd and longs because of calls on the QB.

They SHOULD keep the helmet to helmet rules, and late hits, and all the blatant roughin the QB penalties.

What they obviously need to do away with is the ridiculius, "if you tap the back of the helmet 3 seconds after the ball is thrown" 15 yarders.

By all means protect the QB, but it needs to get a little more lax.
