New York Post -

Ron Artest is available and could be the final big piece to fill out the Knicks' starting lineup at the small forward spot.

Isiah Thomas has 17 Knicks on his roster, which is two above the league limit, making another trade a virtual guarantee. The contracts of Dan Dickau and Fred Jones cannot be combined in a trade for two months, so Thomas is currently shopping Jared Jeffries, Nate Robinson and Randolph Morris.

"I've been active and we'll continue to be active," said Thomas. "I don't consider this a finished product by any stretch," he added later.

Reversing an earlier decision, Thomas may still use this year's mid-level exception to add a shooter or defender.

Asked if he thought the Randolph acquisition made the Knicks a playoff team, Thomas said, "I think it should."

Predictable... And a step backwards.

Quote:
Randolph and Curry: Gotham?s New Dynamic Duo?

By Michael Levine
Posted Jul 3 2007 1:26AM

GREENBURGH, N.Y., July 2, 2007 -- By most accounts, Isiah Thomas pulled off a major coup when he acquired Zach Randolph as part of a five-player trade with the Trail Blazers on Thursday night. The Knicks parted with Steve Francis and Channing Frye for Randolph, Fred Jones and Dan Dickau.

There are certainly peripheral issues that played a role in the deal for both sides, and many aspects of the swap have yet to totally unfold. For the moment, let's put aside the off-the-court issues: the salary cap ramifications, future trade values and the risk associated with Randolph's checkered past.

One glaring question remains: Will "Z-Bo" and new teammate Eddy Curry be able to coexist and thrive together under the bright lights that shine on the Madison Square Garden paint?

That query and many others were asked of Randolph when he was officially introduced to the New York media at the Knicks' practice facility on Monday.

"Some nights it might be my night, and some nights it might be Eddy's night, or (Stephon) Marbury's night, or Quentin (Richardson)'s night, or Jamal (Crawford)'s night," said Randolph of the rest of the team's expected starting lineup. "That's what great players do and that's how you win."

Randolph and Curry in particular have some common history. Both were taken in the 2001 Draft - Curry fourth to the Bulls out of high school and Randolph No. 19 to Portland after one season at Michigan State. Both have raised questions about their ability or desire to stay in game shape. (Despite what Grim Reaper Roper would say, round is not a shape.) Yet both have shown the capacity to be game-changing forces in the low post.

"I love Eddy. I know him personally," Randolph said. "I think Eddy's going to bring my game out of me, and I'm going to bring the game out of him. A guy like him, he's unstoppable. ... Eddy's a monster. He's a beast.

"They got to double-team me, and they got to double-team Eddy. So with a high-low, we're going to work out real good."

But there is concern that the two will get in each other's way around the basket. Already there have been numerous retellings of the "There's still just one basketball, right?" joke. Quality interior scorers are rare and valuable, but does New York suddenly find itself with too much of a good thing?

"It?s safe to say the ball will be in either Eddy Curry or Zach Randolph?s hands almost every time down court," said Thomas in a conference call with the media on Friday. "We?ll throw the ball inside and either it will be in Eddy?s hand on one side or it will be Zach?s hand on the other."

"Eddy Curry on one side and a left-handed southpaw on the other side," said Marbury of the strategy during Saturday's "Starbury's Give Back Day" event at Coney Island. "I expect we play better than what we played last year."

The 2006-07 campaign was a banner year for both Randolph and Curry, who each garnered All-Star attention. Randolph ranked 12th in the NBA with a scoring average of 23.6 points per game, and Curry posted 19.5 per contest to rank No. 23. That combined 43.1 average would have been tops among center-power forward duos.

The other potent combos were Utah's Mehmet Okur and Carlos Boozer (38.5) and Phoenix's Amar頓toudemire and Shawn Marion (37.9). All four of those players were invited to Las Vegas for the midseason classic, and both of those teams had playoff success. If Curry and Randolph can build a chemistry, New York will certainly find itself back in the postseason.

"Eddy's a great player and I'm a great player," said Randolph. "I feel like if you put me on the court with a bunch of great players, I'm going to make those players better and they're going to make me better. That's the way it's supposed to be and that's how you win."

Alas, there is more to teamwork than sharing the load on offense. As the primary inside players, Randolph and Curry will have to do the lion's share of the rebounding and shot-blocking for their team to be successful.

One of the weaknesses of Curry's game has always been his work on the glass. For a player as big and athletic as Curry, his career rebounding average of 5.5 is unacceptable. Even his career-best 7.0 this past year leaves much to be desired. That's where Randolph can really make a difference. He would have ranked 12th in the league last season with a 10.1 average had he played the requisite 70 games, making him one of just four players to rack up 20 points and 10 boards per contest.

Chris Bosh, Kevin Garnett and Boozer - All-Stars all - were the others. Tim Duncan's scoring average (19.9875) was just shy of the cutoff. Most of that list, plus MVP Dirk Nowitzki, Elton Brand, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom reside out West, where Randolph faced them four times apiece.

"They say the West is a harder conference than the East," Randolph quipped. And when asked if he thought he could duplicate his double-double numbers in his new home conference, he simply stated, "I think I can."

Shot-blocking and interior defense may be a bigger worry. Curry, who has grown by leaps and bounds in almost every aspect of his game, posted a career-low 40 blocks last year. Randolph was even more anemic as a rejection artist, tallying just 15 in 68 games. Luke Ridnour - not exactly known for his shot-blocking prowess - was among the 36 NBA guards who swatted more shots than the 6-foot-9 Randolph.

"I'm not a terrific jumper or shot-blocker. But my defense is getting better. Defense is in here," said Randolph as he pointed to his heart. "You can't teach it. It's inside. You've gotta want it."

"I think Zach is a prideful defender right now and I think, as a team, we?ll get better as a defensive unit," said Thomas. "We don?t necessarily give up a tremendous amount of points in the paint. We usually outscore teams in the paint."

So will Randolph be able to find his role on the Knicks' crowded roster and help the wayward franchise find its way?

"With a team full of great players, you have to share. You have to give up something. As long as we win, it's OK," he said. "As long as we win, I don't think it'll be a problem, because I'm not going to have a problem playing team ball and helping this team win. That's what I want to do. ... I'm happy and excited. I wish the season started tomorrow."

Well he's saying all the right things, hopefully he'll stick to what he's saying when the season beings.

Looks good.

I'm interested to see how the frontcourt works out. It is a risk, but for Francis, it's definitely worth it.

Every year before the season the Knicks players talk about the excellent chemistry, great talent, high goals, perfect preperation and then comes the anticlimax

Well the other years it was just BS talk that most teams say, but last season before the games began it all seemed more realistic than prior seasons. It seemed as though players really believed it and I as a fan can say the chemistry was really good throughout the season. They wanted to make the playoffs and obviously fell short of that, but I think they surpassed a lot of Knicks fans' realistic expectations.

As long as Isiah calls the shots, it'll be the same story. Names and what looks good on paper isn't really what it takes. And they've improved but they still are a mess as far as things go. Isiah's only positive attribute is that he gives other teams a destination to drop overpriced/overrated players on them.

I admire Knicks fans patience and devotion, but KB8@CL is right.

New York Post -
The New York Post spoke with Ron Artest's brother Daniel who revealed that Ron wants to play for the Knicks. "He's been quiet about it, but he wants to come home," said Daniel who lives with Ron in Sacramento.

Isiah Thomas has made it clear that he will not trade David Lee in a deal to bring Ron Artest home to New York.

Apparently, Renaldo Balkman is off limits too.

Jared Jeffries and Malik Rose are available, as well as Nate Robinson, Mardy Collins, Randolph Morris and this year's draft picks, Wilson Chandler and Demetris Nichols.

The Knicks also have the expiring contracts of Dan Dickau and Fred Jones to dangle. Trading the two together for Artest could not happen until later this summer under salary cap rules.

Richardson's return from back surgery a slam-dunk

Quote:
July 10, 2007 -- LAS VEGAS - Quentin Richardson brandished a brand-new diamond watch, a new back and a new weapon to his game - the dunk.

Richardson, who had disc surgery in April, participated in the Knicks’ mini-camp yesterday and finally was cleared to play full tilt. And so he did in a Las Vegas gym, working out against David Lee, Fred Jones and Mardy Collins.

“To be honest, I think I’ll be more explosive,” Richardson said. “I was so limited last year and the year before. There were things I was doing to overcompensate. I didn’t realize I was doing it, I got so used to it. I got used to playing with a certain level of pain.

“They were messing with me today. I was in the gym dunking and stuff and they say they haven’t seen me dunk whole last year. I can jump easier.”

Richardson is slated as the starting small forward - a position Isiah Thomas would like to upgrade in trade, preferably with Ron Artest. Thomas said he also inquired about free agent Gerald Wallace.

But Richardson thinks the Knicks are stacked after the Zach Randolph trade.

“There was a team in the Finals I thought we could beat,” Richardson said, referring to Cleveland. “We played them very well.”

Knicks Rout Team China, Improve to 2-0

Quote:
Proving that the previous night's demolition of the Seattle SuperSonics wasn't no mirage in the 110-degree Las Vegas heat, the Knicks won an 88-65 laugher over Team China on Tuesday night. Despite coming off a thrilling victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, the young Chinese team was no match for the athletically superior New York squad, which once again played a total team game en route to the victory.

The star of the game was once again second-round draft choice Demetris Nichols, who was forced to enter the game off the bench due to a stomach virus. Still, the young guard refused to let that slow him down, leading all scorers with 14 points on four of seven shooting, including 3-for-5 from downtown. His 14 points came in a span of only 16 minutes.

Nichols has clearly impressed even the Knicks veterans. At one point during a live interview on NBATV, forward Malik Rose interrupted his thought to remark that "Nichols makes every shot, especially the tough ones!"

One night after frustrating Kevin Durant with his stifling defense, Renaldo Balkman turned in another magnificent performance to shut down the 2007 NBA Draft's sixth overall pick, Yi Jianlian. The Milwaukee Bucks first-rounder was limited to three points, missing all six field goals he attempted while turning the ball over five times. Yi also committed nine personal fouls, many on the offensive end drawn by Balkman, which is one short of the maximum allowed in Summer League play. Yi had come into the contest shooting just 20 percent (5-25 FG) in the last two summer league games and his troubles continued in only 24 minutes of action.

While frustrating Yi, Balkman also showed his versatility and athleticism, pushing the floor and finding Randolph Morris for easy looks down low early in the first half in addition to a high flying rejection of an open three pointer for team China. He finished the game with 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists, five steals and two rejections.

Knicks beat the Kings tonight, 96-84. Lead performance came from Nate Robinson, who had 21 points and 10 assists. Randolph Morris also had a great game, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 boards.

Nate Robinson leads the Vegas League in assists right now with 7.0 a game, and his overall averages are 17 PPG, 3 RPG, and 7 APG.

Knicks beat the Warrios 91-87, making them 4-0 in the Summer League. Nate Robinson had 23 points and 7 assists, playing like he has every game so far. Renaldo Balkman had a solid game with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Randolph Morris had 16 points with 9 rebounds. Like last game, all of the starters were in double figures.

I know this is just the Summer League, but Nate has looked very impressive so far. He's making some terrifc passes and having his way when it comes to scoring. I hope he and Balkman get good minutes for the upcoming season.

Knicks beat Nuggets to Finish Summer League Undefeated

Quote:
July 16, 2007

Nate Robinson was named the Most Outstanding Player of Summer League as the Knicks defeated the Denver Nuggets 116-108 to finish the week long session undefeated. They are only the sixth team in the history of Summer League to accomplish this feat.

They were led by Robinson, who did not have to play in Las Vegas but chose to in order to improve his game for the coming season. In Sunday’s contest against Denver, the diminutive point guard showed off his unique ability to put points up in bunches, leading the Knicks with 24 points on 6-for 12 shooting while going 3-for-6 from behind the three point arc. “Nate the Great” also finished the match with five rebounds and two assists.

While Robinson received the equivalent to MVP honors for Summer League, it is Demetris Nichols who has turned the most heads, and the former Syracuse star did not disappoint in his final performance before training camp. Nichols finished the game with 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting to go along with four boards and three assists. He recorded his 23 points in just 21 minutes of game time, and with his long-range accuracy is a legit threat to crack the rotation come the fall.

The Knicks other rookie, Wilson Chandler, also finished his first week as a Knick out with a bang. The explosive wing player recorded a double-double, dropping in 15 points with ten rebounds, including four offensive boards. He also recorded an assist to go along with three monster rejections.

Randolph Morris is another Knick who finished Summer League out by recording a double-double, his third of the week. He shot 4-for-5 from the field for 10 points, and registered 10 rebounds. Like Chandler, Morris hit the boards on the offensive end hard, bringing in 4 offensive rebounds to give his team numerous second chances. On the defensive front, the former Kentucky standout was a beast in the blocks, registering a pair of rejections to shut down the lane.

Nate Robinson: Summer League MVP

Quote:

While Robinson, who finished in the top five in the league in assists with an average of six per game, was busy setting his teammates up for easy buckets, he also found time to score some points of his own. He averaged 18.8 points per game on 48 percent from the field for New York, which finished 5-0 after defeating the Nuggets on Sunday.

“I try to get better and better each game,” Robinson said. “That is my mentality each day. When I got here, I said I wanted to win and that I also wanted to lead the summer league in assists. I’ve been working on things like keeping my dribble alive longer.”

When the initial Race to the MVP came out, it only included games played through July 11. Robinson, who had only played two games to that point, was not included on that list.

He jumped up to fifth in the rankings when the updated version of the R2MVP came out just two days later. That is what scoring 44 points and handing out 17 assists in two games will do for you.

New York’s two big draft-night pickups, Wilson Chandler and Demetris Nichols, also played very well, and Renaldo Balkman was a defense and rebounding terror.

I always said that Zeke has an eye for talent. Every where he went, he has chosen really well in the draft, and that has saved his butt on more than 1 occasion. His track record in the draft from Tmac to unknowns like Ariza is tremendous. Mitch could take a lesson or two from Zeke in this category.
