Litmus test, anybody?

The ever-improving Andrew Bynum goes up against a young, already-dominant center tonight when the Lakers play host to Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic.

Howard, who turns 22 next Saturday, was the top pick in the 2004 draft and has been a handful down low this season, averaging 23.8 points and 15 rebounds.

Some of his recent stat lines: 30 points and 23 rebounds against Phoenix; 39 points and 16 rebounds against Seattle; 34 points and 16 rebounds against San Antonio.

He has 81 dunks, more than twice as many as any other player in the league. At one point last week, he had more dunks than 25 of the 30 NBA teams.

Bynum, the 10th pick in the 2005 draft, is tied with Seattle forward Chris Wilcox with 34 dunks, second-most in the league. He's also averaging 10.9 points and 10.3 rebounds a game.

"He's a beast now, pretty much like the new Shaq," Bynum said of Howard. "If he gets anything by that restricted area [near the basket], you're in trouble."

"It's going to be tough for 'Drew," Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said. "We'll have to see how it works out."

Derek Fisher didn't want to say much, but it wasn't difficult to sense his disappointment.

Fisher was booed for most of Friday's game by Utah Jazz fans, who were irritated he asked out of his contract with the Jazz over the summer. Fisher wanted to move to a city where he could get top-notch medical care for his young daughter, who has a rare form of eye cancer.

The Jazz let Fisher out of his contract, and he signed a three-year deal with the Lakers.

"I'm choosing not to really comment on the crowd reaction," said Fisher, who had three points on one-for-eight shooting. "I'll take a bow and I'll accept it, but that's about all the attention I want to give it, really."

Jackson was more direct in his disapproval.

"I don't understand that [reaction]," he said. "Of course, you have to take into account the patrons in Utah, the type of people you deal with. I think anything short of total loyalty there is looked at as a traitor. We thought he would get applause."

It isn't exactly a long-awaited reunion because it hasn't even been two weeks since Brian Cook and Maurice Evans were traded to Orlando, but they will be back at Staples Center tonight.

Also mentions Kwame Brown could begin practicing this week.

Howard's been putting up huge numbers this season and dunking away, Bynum has to be ready to play a very physical game with Howard.

Utah fans are classless. How are you going to boo a man, after he asked out of a 20 plus million dollar deal so he can find proper care for his daughter.

Anyway, Dwight has been playing like a man possessed this season, I'm eager to see how Bynum matches up with him. We should be in for a good one.

Also great to hear positive news on Brown. Our post D (prime example: Friday night) has been taking a huge hit without him. With him in the paint, we make it at the very least a closer game. That's where his importance to this team is overlooked.

wow I was expecting Phil to say something that will get him Fined. Hell I would. What Utah fans did was not only tasteless. But A total embarassement of NBA fans.

Like I said I hope this is team we face in the playoffs, and destroy them!!!!

It's a catch-22 for Bynum. If he plays physical, he'll get in foul trouble. If he doesn't, he'll get dunked on(and yes, he'll get dunked on, I've not seen anyone able to prevent him from doing that yet, the worst was Chandler, I don't think I've seen a guy got sodomized that badly by someone else like that EVER, let's just hope Bynum doesn't suffer the same fate.)

OMG I totally forgot about the possibility of Mihm guarding Howard.

Ive watched Mihm get destroyed by so many scrubs this season and i cant even remember their names. May God (and Dwight) have mercy.

I highly doubt that. Bynum's man defense has been pretty good this season. The problem is when he gets out in transition, if you let him gain deep position in those situations, then it's not going to be pretty.

The key for Bynum will be to be very focused, use as much strength as the refs will allow. If he does that, then he should be able to force Howard to settle for jump hooks(though he's become quite good at those this season.)

If he gets out in transition and looks like he's about to gain deep position, then I think you have to try to get in front of him. Challenge them to make a good lob pass(Howard jumps higher, but Bynum's no slouch, so the margin of error will be very small.)

thats the thing

Bynum is a decent one on one defender

I bet Millsapp, Kirilenko, Fesenko, Collins, etc from Utah can't beat Bynum on one on one or score on him goin striaght up....Jerry Sloan exploited Bynum's poor recognition of ball movement on defense and he regularly got caught on screens and he had trouble recovering when his man got open

The Magic do kinda the same thing to free up lewis and turkogolu for mid range shots and if those guys shots are contested by 2 or 3 guys they find
Howard open near the basket for easy dunk or layups

If it was just an one on one situation i wouldn't be worried...

and yea you're right about transition too, not just half court...Howard is blazing fast and quick, he gets out there

About Utah fans - that was classless. But then, I couldn't care less about Utah's fans.

Now, Bynum vs Howard... Howard is a beast, while Bynum is simply solid. He will show improvement every year, but at this point I don't think it's much of a matchup. Sure, I hope I'm proven wrong, but Howard is a much better player at this point.

Bynum could grab more rebounds though, the kid is a rebounding machine.
