| Boston Globe: Doc Rivers made only one appearance in an NBA All-Star Game as a player, having been a coach's selection for the 1988 game in Chicago, which happened to coincide with some of the most brutally cold weather in the history of that great city. "All I can remember from that weekend, other than the cold, was that Jordan was ticked off at halftime," Rivers recalled, referring to, ahem, Michael Jordan. "He didn't want to lose in his own building and he went off because guys were screwing around. So he gave a talk and said, 'If you guys want to have some fun' - then he looked at [coach] Mike [ Fratello] and said, 'put somebody else in. Because I'm not losing in this building.' " Jordan went on to score 40 points (in 29 minutes) and left the old Chicago Stadium a happy fellow because the East emerged victorious, 138-133. Rivers came off the bench for the East (as did Danny Ainge, who hoisted 11 shots in 12 minutes) and finished with 9 points and 6 assists in 16 minutes. He also missed 6 of 11 free throws. |
