Started my diet and routine about three weeks ago, my diet is low in fat and high in complex carbs as for liquids only water, low fat milk, crystal light, and diet sodas but moslty water all the time. Spirited one hour walks three days a week and 3 days a week on my bowflex.
Gone from 312 to 297 feeling great and very energetic. Should I be taking vitamins if so which? My ideal weight is around 165 so I have ways to go, I got this way because of steroids for my asthma. Anything else I should be doing or watching? _________________

Worked out like a dog last summer and went from 215 to 189.
Stopped working out lately though and have been over-eating. Finding it hard to care anymore _________________

Been working out and kinda dieting for the past 3 months. So far i've lost 18lbs. Down to 182.
I know i'm getting alot stronger but one concern of mine is that I can't do a pullup to save my life. I don't know why. Any tips? _________________

^ How tall are you? And I suppose how much can you bench? I'm 150-155 at 5'7, I can't bench a great deal (maybe 200 for a few reps), but I can do a dozen pullups.
If you want to build up specifically to do a pullup, here are some ideas:
1. Do pullups on a machine that removes body weight...so start doing pullups with half of your weight. They normally require you to stand or kneel on a bar and you are counterbalanced by weight that is subtracted from your actual weight.
2. Do static holds. Stand on a bench, pull yourself up to the fully contracted position (be sure your muscles are engaged though) and hang there in place as long as you can.
3. Do negative pullups. Use a bench to climb up to the contracted position, then move your feet off the bench and slowly descend, pulling hard to resist getting down to the bottom.
You should be progressively stronger in these movements, where you might not be able to do more than a pullup or two at half of your body weight, you should be able to hold yourself for longer than you can do work time with your full body weight, and you should be able to resist for longer than you can statically hold yourself. Just be very careful to be well warmed up before doing static or negative work. It's dangerous if you don't know what you're doing...and be sure to BREATHE or you'll get a friggin' hernia. |

I'm 5'10, Weigh About 180. I'm Not A Big Heavy Lifter. I Bench Around 130 Comfortably 12-15 Reps.
My Pulls-Ups are a Joke Though. I Just Wanna Be Able To Multiple Reps. Thanks for the tips. I tried that machine that takes away the weight. It's pretty good. _________________

Same with me.
You just gotta do them whenever possible, and if you can't do anymore Reps, just use your legs to support you just enough to keep going as long as possible.
It's different when you don't have the opportunity to do them.
Maybe you should use one of these:
It'll definitely improve your Pull Ups, although it's nothing compared to actually doing them.
But honestly, you weight 180 on a size of 5'10. That's a lot. I'd say maybe it would be best to go running everyday a little bit and then eat until your full. I never belived, that you're doing your body any good when you stop eating before you're full. It's about what you eat and what you do in a regular day, not about how much you eat. |

| You might be interested in a kipping pullup. Head over to crossfit.com and look under the exercises or demo section. If you can get the kip right, you can do a lot of pullups and get those muscles working on being able to do it minus the kip. |

Followed some of the tips..Been doing that machine that takes the weight off and just doing pullups..I've actually improved to being able to do 2.
I've been working out on a consistent basis for the past 3-4 months. Haven't been taking any supplements or any of those protein shakes. I see alot of people taking those. Should I jump on the bandwagon? What about vitamins? Thanks _________________

for luke walton too... vitamins.. do what you feel... if you feel energetic enough and feel your workout is maximizing as is.. then you dont really need to.. especially if you are already on an excellent diet... although as you get older doctors still want you to supplement your vitamins.. vitamins cant hurt.... its strictly optional..
in regards to other substances... again its personal... myself i like to be au natural.. as god intended me to be... if you want faster results yes those other "supplements" can help..you can take protein and its no biggie.. but the other "uppers" can be hazardous and you have to cycle with them... so its kinda a hassle... in the end just do you... if you are staisfied thats really all that matters _________________ CLUB-DODGERS

Congrats on the success so far.
Sounds like you're getting plenty of cardio and strength work. Most people do not need vitamins. You should be getting plenty of nutrients in your normal diet if you're eating dairy, meats, veggies, fruits, and grains. If you're slacking on some of them, you might look into supplements. Someone at GNC COULD help you with that question, but the best way to go is to talk to a nutritionist. Short of that, you might find somewhere online that examines your food intake and tells you what you need to do.
Realage.com is a site that offers an analysis like that. |

I believe I'm doing a great job with my diet, lots of low fat milk, whole wheat and grains, chicken breast, turkey, nothing fried, and of course veggies and fruits. Haven't felt this great in years. I slacked a bit today on my diet but that's okay tomorrow I get back up and continue...
I refuse to live under obesity and asthma, it isn't an option anymore, I will win this battle. _________________

i would guess lots of running, push up, pull-ups, and sit ups.
lots of ups
its mostly bodyweight exercises im sure.
and if you've never done an "up-down" you will quickly grow to hate those.
i hope you dont have to do many bear crawls either
they make you stronger/better, but goodness gracious they suck _________________ keepin it fresh eight days a week

Actually, Carbonation does affect metabolism. It also affects your bodies ability to absorb certain minerals.

There is no compelling evidence at this point. It might well be true, but there are a few experiments that say yes and a few that say no. I've looked into it as well. |

ive taken a bit of a reprieve from lifting and training. basically the only
exercise ive gotten lately has been playing basketball.
today, i ate (gorged) on buffalo wings, french fries, and chips with guacamole.
drank gin and wine tonight. my final day of hedonism
tomorrow i return to a functional diet and rigorous exercise.
