Kobe could obviously do this, but why would he risk it?

It's a production. The only evidence you need is common sense.

What he did was simple - Kobe was standing closer to the camera, and the car was behind him. You easily see it if you really pay attention. Or simply pause the video, and you'll see it. So he can jump over the car - but he didn't actually do it. They were side-to-side.

Simple, but effective camera trick.

Not really. Do a frame-by-frame analysis in virtualdub. Put the mouse cursor where Kobe's feet are and move the frames, the car moves right over where Kobe's feet were.

There are so many ways to achieve this, there's no reason to even discuss it. He did not actually jump over that car, because it would not be allowed by the organization. Simple as that. He did jump high, he would have jumped over the car - but the car was either next to him, or it wasn't there at all. Pick one.

Cool vid even though the car doesn't really go under Kobe, its next to him.

No way Laker management and PJ would be amused by this if it was real.

I saw this on LG and was hoping it wouldn’t come on here. C’mon guys, use common sense. Revgen, you of all people should know when you see something like that.

First off, look at Kobe’s trajectory up. It’s like he jumped up 2 feet in the air, they freezed frame, cut him out and increased his jump. Its very jerky. Its pretty obvious it was a fake.

But use common sense. Do you REALLY think ANYONE, forget the Lakers, Kobe, whatever, BUT ANYONE that makes movies/commercials actually would do this as real (outside of Jackie Chan). It’s a video edit.

IMO the car isn’t even there. This was shot in a green room. Then they went outside and shot the scene with only the car driving by.

Its a fun commecial tho

I'm just surprised no one's come on to lament the fact that the Kobe Bryant of 2003 could have leaped 8 feet over the car.

One thing this shows is that I have to take observations about games I don't see with a grain of salt. "Ok, that guy said Kobe was forcing too many shots and that Gasol was playing soft. But wait, that guy also thought the kobe car video was for real so maybe I shouldn't trust his judgment." mhihi

There is plenty of reason to discuss this simply because there is no way that you have Kobe's shadow being casted over the car, at the same angle as it's being casted on the ground, his feet launch and land at very close proximity, and the cars tires run over the exact location where his feet were. You can do it frame-by-frame. If it's fake, then Nike must have spent a whole lot of time on a small low-rez video for Kobe's website. Kobe isn't exactly an A-list advertisor anymore. If Nike did this for Lebron, then I could understand. I'm not saying it can't be faked, but the amount of time and money spent would be a lot to do.

Crux, you don't have to be a genius. Just download Virtual Dub and look at the video. Put your cursor where Kobe's feet are. Look at his shadow as moves over the car. Why would anybody do this much fakery for some low-rez flash video file for an athlete who's not even A-list anymore in terms of marketing.?

read crucifixion's post.

Forget about the video. It's nice, entertaining, impressive. That's all cool.

But don't think about the video montage techniques and other things at all. Just use common sense.

Is it possible they have him suspended from cables and did this much slower and then cropped the cables out & sped up the video after the fact?

Like I said before, it's possible, but the amount of time spent on a very low-rez video for an althlete who's not A-list in terms of marketing seems ridiculous. If they did this with Lebron, then I might buy it. Doing cables is one thing. Casting a shadow on a car is another.

It is possible. Many different things are possible - and one of them was done to make it. It's not even that expensive to make, come on.

Does anyone really think Kobe got the permission to jump over a speeding car? man3

Kobe didn't use common sense during the off-season. As much as I like Kobe, the words Kobe and common sense hardly go together. If we're talking Derek Fisher, then you have a point.

It's fake, he slows down in mid air, plus the fact that you know he wouldn't do that anyway. He's too serious about ball to ever do that, especially during the season. He's not playing games with a messed up pinky just to injure himself jumping over a car.

It's all marketing for the new shoe.

p.s. I didn't think the acting was anything special either, especially Ronny.

of course it's not....on so many different levels it's not...lol imagine if it was real what management would think? Vlad ya around here somewhere?

but honestly, very clean video editing. We had to do something like that in m advanced video effects class using After Effects, but that was really clean...especially with the light post shadow and it going on and even distorting on the car.......SEE the lightpost was there to add more of a feeling of realness to the shot...also it would have been a little bare if it wasn't there....

the easiest way to have done this would easily to have made it all real, and make the car with a green screen and match the lighting to the day light and change the shadows to however appropriate in whatever program you use.

also, if everything was shot and kobe and ronny were green screened, you would be able to do more things with kobe, like take him higher or longer or farther....but the lighting on them was just too perfect.

Selling a shoe....best interest of Nike.

Selling Kobe...best interest of Lakers.

Pinkie-gate held Kobe out of the All Star game for all but 1 minute.
That means less face time to promote Kobe's new Nike shoe on the biggest NBA stage other than the postseason.

So who has more pull, Nike or the Lakers?

Again, we should just enjoy the production: Kobe participating in it...him bring Ronny along...cool dialogue exchange (cause it makes Kobe seem more human and less mechanical ie. a killer robot sent out to "execute" the NBA)...creative concept by Kobe himself and his Nike staff.

Very entertaining to watch and noone got hurt (or was put in a situation to get hurt).

Could Kobe do something like that? I think so. He's a tremendous athlete. He does unimaginable things on the court on a nightly basis.

Should Kobe do something like that? Hell no! It just wouldn't be smart.

The urban legend/myth is that Kobe can no longer jump high. Bruce Blitz has even gone on record calling him Kobe "half hops" Bryant. I knew someone was going to disclaim the authenticity of the jump, not because of it being impossible, but because Kobe Bryant is the one doing it.

Not only would the Lakers and Phil Jackson not approve of this but why would Nike risk the life and health of a guy they're paying multi millions to on a single commercial? It's an interesting ad and discussing the logistics of how it was made is fine but I'm surprised that any logical fan would believe this is real.
