Quote:
LA Times: The Lakers are leaning toward having Bryant guard Allen Iverson, who averaged 26.4 points a game. They are also planning to have Vladimir Radmanovic guard Carmelo Anthony, who averaged 25.7 points.

The harder defensive assignment might belong to Radmanovic, who earned his place in the starting lineup by making 41.5% of his three-point attempts while averaging 11.1 points over his last 16 games. One thing he isn't known for is intense defense.

Adding to the intrigue is that the Lakers aren't as familiar with Anthony's game this season for a slew of reasons.

The Lakers played the Nuggets only three times, one fewer than they played against most other West teams, and Anthony didn't finish two of those games. He was ejected midway through the fourth quarter of one of them for hitting Sasha Vujacic in the throat, and he left the other game midway through the second quarter because of a sprained ankle.

"It's definitely going to be challenging to guard somebody like Carmelo, but I'm ready for it," Radmanovic said. "I watched the tapes and I'm getting prepared for him. We'll see what happens out there."

Atleast he watched tapes and it sounds like he's taking it seriously.

Yup, I just hope he doesn't need a smackin the face to play seriously, as PJ and Shaw like to put it.

I think Vlad can surprise us in defending Melo. He's got a big body even though he doesn't use it. He can get physical with Melo and force him to take jumpers. He won't be able to post him up.

Maybe he can tyson him up, throw him down to the floor and wait for him to retaliate and get suspended for the series.

Lets hope not, but melo isn't the cleanest bball player out there..

And of course we already know Kobe can defend Iverson. Just back off him enough to stop his penetration to the rim. But if if he tries to shoot the jumper, Kobe will use his length to discourage the shot. It'll lead to a lot of dribble and confusion on AI's part. But to free him up, I hope Denver doesn't run screen roll.

Force him to take jumpers? Isn't that what he wants to do?

Pleasantly surprised to hear Kobe will take on the task fo defending Iverson.

As for Vlad on Carmelo, I'm sure we all don't expect much. He did a good job on McGrady earlier this year, but I'm sure if he can at least keep up with Anthony, than we'll be good. I don't want him to get worn out to the point where his 3 ball is ineffective.

Against Vlad he'd probably prefer to take it to the rim since Vlad's lateral movement is nothing short of mediocre.

Vlad on Melo?

They've gotta be kidding. LO should be on him. Make Vlad defend K-Mart or somebody else. K-Mart isn't exactly the same as he was with the Nets.

when did we become the Spurs? man3

Im happy about Kobe taking on AI. That might tire him a bit and effect him on offense, but with the way Denver play D that shloudnt be a problem. Vlad defending Melo might a bit a problem but ill roll with it for now. Im sure Phil has plan B and C. If nothing works Phil can always throw Newble in to gaurd Melo

If Vlad is a terrible failure, you can always bring in Ronny to match-up with K-Mart and use LO on Melo. Without Ariza, not sure what else you could try. Perhaps Sasha on AI and Kobe on Melo.

i dunno
last time i remember melo getting those easy buckets in the paint just b/c he's so good at using his size and body against kobe. i wouldn't want kobe to D melo too long. post defense is fatiguing on a guard, even the greatest of them.

Melo's jumper has been really off of late....he's not canning those turnarounds he used to hit with regularity anymore. His ankle is still sore and it's affecting his accuracy a lot. He'll still make buckets, but he's not the force he was when he was healthy.

Instead the real sparkplug for them has been Smith who's been hot from the perimeter and is also athletic enough to run the floor and also get to the rim.

I'm thrilled that I won't have to endure AI blowing past Fish over and over again. Gimme some of the gold medal shut down D, Kobe!

Hey well if Vlad fails, at least we've got Sasha. He's bound to get Melo tossed in at least one of the games.

Now's the time I wish we had Ariza. Remember how he locked down on him after Iverson burned everyone else? That was pretty amazing for 6 ft. 7-8 guy.

Does Phil not know we have Ira Newble on the roster? Im not saying he is our answer to our prayers but he is an upgrade over Vlad Rad defensively.

Newble can't defend him for long, Melo can easily score on smaller opponents

as long as vlad stays in the game, his head in the game, and uses his length effectively, you can contain carmelo.

I don't think it is a good idea for Kobe to guard AI. He can shut him down easy, but we need his offense.

Kobe is better than anyone in the league at doing it two ways, but if the team is struggling offensively, then have sasha or fish or farmar chase him around. If the team is going good, have Kobe shut his arse down.

The best way to "defend" melo is to make him play defense on rad.

Make melo have to run out there and defend the perimeter while Vlad gets to shoot and hopefully make his threes.

then on the other end, Vlad should use his long frame to make melo think twice about entering.

Newble will be used if Vlad doesn't work , Phil doesn't want to sacrifice the offense he gets from Vlad without at least giving Vlad a try at guarding Melo.

2 really bad ideas. Why risk Kobe getting foul trouble no one in the league draws as many petty touch fouls as AI he'll juke and fall down like Kobe sledged hammered him and its to the bench for Kobe. I'd do it late but not early. Have Fish and Farmar chase him around.

And Vlad will get eaten alive he needs to save the mental energy by just guarding Kmart and having Odom use his length challenging Melo's jumpers then have Luke off the bench guard him.

We're gonna have to score some points so I'd rather just get our buckets get the lead and then switch Kobe over on either Melo or AI depending on who's hot..

Maybe it's just me but I seem to remembering Luke doing a pretty decent job on Melo. Well, at least better than Vlad.
