Magic in six.

D-12 will be too much for whatever the Pistons will throw at him.

That switch Detroit seems to be able turn on and off better stay on throughout this entire series. Dwight Howard is no joke. I am going to say Detroit wins the series but I wouldn't be at all shocked if Orlando ends up winning.

I like Detroit's starting 5 more than Orlando's. Detroit didn't look good at the beginning of the Philly series, but towards the end they got it together. Dwight Howard played incredibly in round 1, but he alone won't be able to carry the Magic. Tashaun and Chauncey should be able to keep a handle on Jameer and Hedo. Detroit has great perimeter D, and I expect them to really hamper their offense.

Detroit in 6.

The Magic have some very good pieces in terms of scheme and talent. Hedo will, if last season was any indication, cut to the basket, catch around the rim and make shots. Rashard Lewis elminates a chance for the Pistons to have a size advantage on the perimeter.

This series will be won in how they Pistons play the pick-and-roll game as they cover Howard. Detroit was able to squeeze Nelson and Arroyo last season for easy turnovers. They would throw up bad, erratic shots after trying to break down the Pistons off the dribble. The Magic have a tendency to let Nelson play for 3-5 bad possessions, then play Rashard Lewis or Hedo Turkoglu as a point forward with the same set. If they do this, it makes Dwight Howard easier to guard because the Pistons have eliminated the shooting options off the drive.

If they run too many sets for Howard, the Pistons are prepared to stay home on the shooters. They did this with Shaq in 2004, 2005, and 2006. They know how to play a team when it's tossed inside.

Pistons in Six.

True. Walton and Kobe were the lone youngsters used in that series with the ability to drive, shoot, and dribble.

And the Magic's scoring option from the man on the drive is better on that pick-and-pop than last season.

Hedo needs to play well for Magic to have a chance. Magic is actually playing surprisingly good defense.

If Magic was smart, they would attack Billups. He's pretty slow on D.

Mo Evans, when Dwight Howard asks for the ball...Give it to him!!

4 technicals on Rasheed Wallace....when is he going to learn to dial it back? 2 more and he is gone for a game.

Mo is a knucklehead. We all know that.

Magic is going to lose this series if Howard continue to shoots Shaqesque FT.

Magic needs a PG to attack Billups, and know how to run a team. Magic's offense is a mess, just a jump of shooters right now.

Game 1 observations:

Magic

- D12: didn't get the ball as much as he wanted(and usually when he did get the ball it was out of his operating range). Clearly frustrated by Pistons' physical defense, especially Maxiell(Shooting 2-7 FT's didn't help either). Injured his off-hand while trying to secure a defensive board.

- Lewis: hit some timely shots, even took 'Sheed to the rack couple of times. Gotta find his touch from the three-land though, 0-4 3P(shot 9-20 overall)

- Hedo: he read the defense well and acted accordingly, though missed lots of gimmies after penetration. Like Lewis, he also needs to find his touch from the outside(1-3 3P, actually made 2 but stepped on the line).

- Mo Evans: you know you had a bad night when your best highlight is stepping out of bounds...twice.

- Jameer: had a very difficult assignment in Billups. Chauncey didn't look impressed with him either, getting to the foul line at will. He constantly looked for any openings and actually scored on a few lay-ups.

- Dooling: althought shot 1-5 from the field, he had a much greater impact on the game compared to Evans. Earlier in the game, he had some very aggressive drives resulting in blocking fouls. Even made a contested mid-range shot, only to chuck a three pointer afterwards.

Pistons

Won't go into detail with Detroit, here are some general observations of mine - they played a very physical game, especially on Howard. Maxiell and McDyess were the lead actors. McDyess had a nice game, high percentage shooting along with a couple of blocks. Same can be said for Maxiell as well. Rasheed's shot was off but still managed to hit two threes and a very difficult fadeaway from the low post over both Hedo & Howard. Shooting woes of Detroit didn't end with 'Sheed, as both Chauncey & Prince had off-nights as well. Rip started the game with red-hot shooting but eventually cooled down down the stretch(17 points on %50 FG)

The Pistons frontline thoroughly dominated the second half. Theo Ratliff, Jason Maxiell, and Antonio McDyess were key to this victory last night. The Magic lost Rashard Lewis for much of the game while Hedo and Nelson showed why the Magic were swept last season.

Something for Detroit to brush up on:
-- Force Lewis into tougher shots. Later on this series they may go down.
-- Perimeter shooting off the bench (Stuckey, Hayes) will have to improve. Even if it means changing personnel.
-- Howard wasn't playing away from the action most of the first half. That's the adjustment Van Gundy brings. When he was setting up the action, this looked like the 2005 Miami Heat series.
-- Maintain agressiveness with Orlando: McDyess was the leader here.

They looked much more focused and prepared than they did in the Philadelphia series.

The Magic needs a better point guard, they need to run more pick and roll with D12 ala Nash and Amare. And the 3 pt shooters need to go through screens and get open shots. All their 3's are difficult, and sometimes off the dribble. Whereas you see Detroit, and how Hamilton go under screens and just read the defense all night long with open shots after open shots. That is a big difference.

Jameer has the speed advantage, so he needs to attack all the time. Because on the defensive end, he's being taken advantage of his size. Billups is posting him up at will. Jameer needs to return the favor and expose Billups slow footspeed.
