Ok, the scene is a fantasy gym hosting the greatest pickup game ever. Five teams of five are challenging for king of the floor. Each team represents the best five at their position of all time. Which position wins the challenge? For the sake of this thread you'll have to live with my opinion of the best five at each position. Assume each player shows up in their prime.

Center team:
Kareem / Wilt / Russell / Shaq / Hakeem

PF Team:
Duncan / Mailman / Barkley / McHale / Garnett

SF Team:
Bird / Dr J / Elgin / Worthy / Pippen

SG Team:
Jordan / Kobe / Logo / Clyde Drexler / Gervin

PG Team:
Magic / Big O / Stockton / Isaiah Thomas / Walt Frazier

Once they get the ball into the low post, no doubt. I'm not so confident that they would successfully be able to bring the ball up court consistently. They would also have zero 3 point shots.

Shaq believe it or not can dribble down the floor. Let's not forget Shaq is a big boy. Who is going to be brave enough to actually try to reach and take it from him when he stars barreling down the floor.

Hakeem also could dribble it.

I would wager (probably) on the SF team they have size and ball handlers while I think the SG team probably has the best all around game. Initially I would have said the bigs would win but in theory the SG's and SF would run them like a trackmeet which would, in the end, exhaust the bigs. Lets not forget the outside shooting that most of the bigs can not do so trading baskets would still benefit the SG's and SF's.

Interesting matchups

Well let's not forget. You may have a point with the PF's..However in means of talking about prime the centers may run everyone else out of the gym..

I mean the most unathletic guy is Shaq and if you have a time machine to orlando Shaq he was basically a combination of Dwigh't strength with Amare's speed.

Throw Hakeem who ran David Robinson in prime out of the building, Wilt who was one of the most athletic monster to ever lace them up and a former globetrotter back when only there 6 was six on the roster, Kareem who is part of showtime, and russell another freak of nature.

We also have to remember that the Sg's/Sf's aren't really pure shooters. I see those teams looking kind of like the USA teams who if you run zone at them would have trouble scoring. Even if the SG/Sf teams were hot you are basically trading jumpshots to layup and dunks which eventually those jumpshots are going to miss.

Plus talk about getting tired. Imagine the likes of Kobe and Jordan taking an elbow from Shaq in the post for a fulll game.

^ All valid points but I think if you use the intellegence of the Kobe, MJ and Logo (just to point out 3) they wouldn't take many elbows from the bigs. Infact, I would figure that they let it be an uptempo exchange baskets type of game. Yes, all the bigs in their primes could move but if they had to run with the likes of Kobe, MJ, Logo, Gervin and Clyde the Glide they would get worn out. Lets not forget about the sheer "Posterizations" that these little guys have put on bigs. Of course I know that no one has done more "dunking-on" than the bigs but they are supposed too. Also, I would have to bring up the defensive abiltiy of the SG's which would bring a lot of steals in passing lanes even though the Bigs have some great passers I'll still give the edge to the SG's.

Now the SF's have something the SG's don't have which would be even more impressive, that being size. Being stronger than the SG's would be a great advantage while playing the Bigs but I think they would play a slower game which would favor the Bigs in the long run. I think this game SF's vs Bigs would be a closer game than the SG's vs Bigs.

If Kobe and MJ could share the ball enough with one another and their 3 teammates, I'm going with them. Their competitive instincts alone vault them to a higher playing field than the other 4 spots.

I see the last two teams playing for King of the floor being the SGs and the SFs. I lean toward the SGs slightly. The SGs can guard the SF fairly well, but the SFs can't really guard this group of SGs.

On the point of the centers not being able to dribble it up the court against the smaller guys.

Couldnt they do a relay of passing up the court, just outjumping the smaller guys?

I suppose it's possible, but that would have to happen for every possession. Plus those passes would have to be pinpoint. Keep in mind that Jordan, Kobe, etc. are able to jump fairly high in their prime.

I was thinking the same thing. The bigs wouldnt have to be stationary though obviously. They could run around like wide recievers with guys a foot shorter guarding them. They could also set screens for eachother to be more open to recieve the pass. It would be hilarious to watch though. they could theoretically play an entire game without the ball touching the hardwood. mhihi

Yeah, Pippen was a tough call for me. Arguably the best D at SF of all time. I could not switch him for Dr J though. It was between Pippen and LeBron for me and I chose LeBron because he can take over a game and Pippen never did. But, you are right in wanting a defensive specialist on the team. Okay, I'm gonna put Pippen in place of LeBron.

Puhleeeeeeeeze!

Remember this is prime Dr J, not the older Doc. Don't make me pull out the old vids of the legend. This was a man that other great players simply stood and watched with jaw dropping amazement. man4
