http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/playoffs2008/news/story?id=3392778

Quote:
CLEVELAND -- David Stern's senses have been assaulted, and the commissioner feels it's time to turn down the noise and scale back the pyrotechnics at NBA games.

Stern went on a rant Monday night prior to Game 4 of the Celtics-Cavaliers series when asked if the trend toward loud, fiery in-arena entertainment gimmicks had gotten out of hand.

"I'm going to get in trouble for this, but I think they're ridiculous. I think the noise, the fire, the smoke is a kind of assault that we should seriously consider reviewing in whether it's really necessary given the quality of our game," Stern said.

Ben Wallace said the smoke from pregame fireworks in Boston prior to Game 2 worsened the dizzy condition that knocked him out of that game after just four minutes, and the Cavs decided to keep him in the locker room prior to Game 3 so he would not have a similar reaction during pregame introductions in Cleveland. The Cavs put on one of the league's most elaborate player-introduction rituals, with four huge jets shooting large streams of fire out of the corners of the center-court scoreboard.

"It may be that these are the maniacal rantings of a fan from a different era, and I recognize that, but you know I'm sitting there waiting for the next cannon to go off, and then the fire heats up the arena so the temperature in the arena rises by 15 degrees -- that's if you can see it because you're still waiting for the smoke, which is chemical, to clear, which is invariably done by the end of the half," Stern said.

"But I always bite my tongue because I'm not the demographic that wants to be assaulted by loud rap, smoke, pyrotechnics and chemicals. It makes me sort of outdated, but I think it's time for us to say, 'Hey guys, let's look at it one more time,'" he said
.

Stern has had similar concerns in the past, and in 1996 the league strictly enforced a little-known rule on maximum in-arena decibel levels when the Utah Jazz were competing in the Western Conference finals against the Seattle SuperSonics.

"I think that's what has happened is that very well-intentioned people feel that it's their obligation to root their team on to victory, to urge them," he said. "But what they do is, they think if you turn up the loudspeaker it's going to help them perform better -- even though there are babies in the building.

"I think we should have it as a time capsule item, because in some future century people are going to look and say, 'What were they thinking about?'" he said. "And I'm positive that Red [Auerbach] is watching and getting ready to call me, because I think we've gone over the top."

Stern needs to realize that times are changing. Fans can't just sit there and cheer on their teams with no energy in the arena (music, fireworks, and so forth).

I would definitely welcome a new commissioner if given the decision. This dude is stuck in his own era of basketball.

some of the entertainment is good to have...i love the lakers pregame videos, that white sheet tehy drop down all of that good stuff. i think the pyro stuff is stupid. the mascots are incredibly lame. i would love to see benny the bull shoot a tshirt in some poor kids face one of these days. entertainment is good to keep the fans involved but jumping thru rings of fire COUGH COUGH HORNETS COUGH COUGH is just ridiculous. i even saw an old woman juggling bowls during a clippers game once...whats the point of that? i didnt get more energy i went flacid for 2 straight weeks after seeing that

STern is starting to look good again.

Yes to video. Yes to mascots.

NO F-ing Way to Fireworks and firerings.

i mean ben wallace missed game 2 becuase the smoke killed his sinuses so much.

the lady juggling bowls was half-time. the lakers have her there on occasion. she was doing it on top of 8 foot unicycle, pretty interesting to watch actually.

I have to sort of agree with Stern, especially in regards to the pyrotechinicks. All of it is getting too gimmicky. The game is the attraction, not everything around it.

I agree with most of what Stern said.

The smoke in Boston is very noticeable on TV. Imagine how it is for the fans and players there. We already saw what it did to Ben Wallace.

On Sunday, they showed a clip of Phil before the game telling the team in the locker room to cover their mouths when the Jazz mascot rides by on a motorcycle so they don't get asphyxiated by the exhaust.

He's right. The gimmicks, the music during plays, the pyro, it's out of hand.

I definately prefer the 90's and early 00's as far as the gimmicks were concerned, because it wasn't as bad as it is today. It was perfect.

He's definitely right, there's no need for fireworks inside a building...it was kind of sad to see babies at ESA with ear plugs for the noise.

The smoke can really be too much for some players. People will allergies can have serious problems because of this.

Dwyane Wade too, he seems to fall a lot out of no where with no warning signs. It's gotta be the smoke!

The loud music is out of hand. San Antonio are big culprits of that.

Aside from the fireworks, what else do you guys think about it? I mean he wants music tone down along with loudspeakers. Speaking of which, it sounds like he's taking a indirect jab at PA announcer for the Pistons.

Though I find it annoying, that's what makes their arena unique and distinct from others.

Well, I'll tell you one thing bout the noise: I had to turn the volume down in Utah because of their fans. I say, Stern should kick them out of the arena. man12

He should do something about fans yelling racial slurs at the visiting team.

SA seems like they do it in almost every single possession. It gets annoying.

Stern should also attend the game in Utah on Friday... there's A LOT of things he can learn from that horrid place.

I guess to teenagers this might be considered old, but I'm 28 and I agree completely with Stern on this and I don't really even like him all that much. This might be the smartest thing he's said in well over a decade. I don't care for these ridiculous pyro shows before the game and I don't like artificial noise pumped in. If the crowd isn't going to get into the game that's their fault.

The Laker Girls do need to stay though. jam2 jam2

No.

I don't think anyone said anything bad about mascots. I'd love it if LA had one.

The pyro stuff is not needed. No point in it really.

Can't believe I'm typing this, I'm a lot younger than Stern, but I agree with him.

Concentrate on the game as the show, not the lame, over the top sideshows. Are people's attention spans really that weak?

Against: Motorcycling mascots, so much smoke that you think you're lost in the London Fog (yes that's you Boston), against fireworks.

For: videos, music, mascots in general.

This is not pyrotechnics, but here's an example of what David Stern is talking about..

Before Game 3, Phil Jackson told the team to cover their mouth/nose when the motorcycle crap went on.

Even the mascots are lame. I'm glad the Lakers don't resort to that crap and concentrate of delivering a strong product instead.

I agree everyone about the flames and pyrotechnics. That's just over-the-top for an arena atmosphere, Football with an open/no roof dome or stadium, fine. Closed and compact NBA arenas, no.

But I even think the music played during the game is distracting. Playing music during time-outs is fine, but when a team is bringing the ball up the court? I just see no use for that. "In Da Club" being blasted over the loudspeakers doesn't pump me up for my team or the game. Again, during breaks in play it's fine with me just during the game I find it rather annoying.

after spending time at the boston garden I bet he does one it to cut down.

I guarantee this is a shot at Boston. It is obnixous how much pyro they use. It is to the point where it looks like a huge fog on the court.

Yep. I've been saying during the Hawks series and now the Cavs series, there is no reason an arena should look like this:
