I do believe the world is in immenent danger just not from the 2012 date. There are plenty of other ones that follow like 2029 and 2036 .... which if I am not mistaken, and I may be, the Quran either states or eludes to the world ending in 2036 which is the same year the asteroid will make its second pass at the world. But I doubt that would be a global killer. But yes I am afraid of the future and of uncertainty. _________________

^ I hope you are kidding.
Our soiciety seems to have one gigantic problem. We always need something that we can be afraid of. If you watch the media you get the feeling that simply by stepping out of your house you're in big danger. I think this is because of the recent history of international politics. Before 1990 the world was baisically divided into two groups and it was easy to be afraid of the other one. There was a constant danger that everybody knew of. Now all of a sudden you're living much more safer even with terrorist attacks so now what happens? People are constantly looking for things that they could be afraid of. It's the little things as well as the big things like the predictions we're talking about in this thread or, and this is without a doubt my favourite example, climate change. That's just the best one. It's invisble, we can't fight it with guns or fists, it's everywhere at the same time and it has the power to kill us all. What a great thing to be afraid of. And what happens? All of a sudden CO2 sounds like the name of a serial killer living next to you. |

The chance of that Asteroid hitting is 1 in 45,000...but science would have gone a long way by that time. It's possible that scientists and others can build something to either destroy that asteroid (and others) or possible change their route so that the Earth doesn't get hit. |

This is absurd, they have predicted Eclipses and stars in our galaxy that have come true you are ignorant and you need to go back to school for making a assumption based on what you want to hear rather then doing research. |

| Polo4, you can make your opinion & contribute no doubt, but no need to call out another member just because they don't agree with you (check your use of the word 'ignorant'). |

Actually Polo4 isn't that far off, the Mayan's did study the sky and traced the position of the stars over many years of critical observation. They kept tract of the solar years like many past civilizations. the number 260 is tied with the nature life cycle (crops, length of trimester during pregnancy, etc.... (their calendar completes all it's total cycles (9 I believe) which add up to 5125 solar years). They actually planned wars to start on the cycle of Venus which suggest they predicted time based on spacial reference points giving them a concept of space time not much different than the way western civilization perceives it.
I think this is what Polo4 is getting at.
I completely disagree with the end of the calendar cycle as a prediction for the fate of man kind. All we know is that their calendar will have completed all of it's 9 cycles which add up to 5125 solar years from the date the mark as the beginning of everything. It is complete speculation as to what the end of those cycles mean if anything. The Mayan's had many complex religious beliefs that also tied into their perceived awareness. It is difficult to determine what the Mayan's actually believed was to happen, the end of man kind?, the beginning of a new shift in consciousness? reincarnation (also thought to have been part of their culture, they believed in cycles of rebirth which would suggest to me a concept of eternity? |

I'm not sure what exactly predicting stars means because that's so abstract.
And the mayans wouldn't be the first to study the stars and do the things you said in your post MC _________________ TONY STARK WAS ABLE TO BUILD THIS IN A CAVE......WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!!! - Obadiah Stane

Not all of there predictions have come true. Yes they did study the stars and yes they had calendars. But I don't see how the end of the world is coming due to a simple connotation that people make based on fear. I love how you assume I don't know jack and that I need to go back to school ... I am a history major in college. Here is one prediction that we know is false. That the world was created in 3,114 BC (when translating the Mayan Calendar to the Christian, or Gregorian, calendar). So roughly 5,000 years ago. Funny as we can scientifically prove that the world was around long before that. So I guess not everything that the Mayans say are true!
At the same time they were ahead of their time, they had knowledge that hadn't even reached the Eastern, more civilized nations in the world, EVEN IN MATHEMATICS! Besides that, the Mayan's never ever said the world would end in the year 2012. From the research that people have done specifically on the Mayan calendar do say that we would be able to see the "tree of life" which many attribute to a new power of knowledge.
Also KobeShow@CL, is it so wrong to fear death? Maybe I love life and the fact that one day it will end does sadden me? Maybe I like to be aware of my surroundings so I can live life to an age in which I would be satisfied passing away. I will be 42 years old when the 2029 passage happens and 49 years old when the 2036 passage happens. That is much younger than I want to be when my time is up. I am aware there are things that happen everyday that puts me in danger, like driving a car for example. But at the same time of me being aware and afraid of death, based on the fact that I want to live, doesn't mean I am going to stop doing every day things. I still am going to live life like I would normally. Like when my eye doctor said I can no longer play basketball because of my partially detached retina, I said "screw you doc! I am going to live life doing what I like to do." Just not is so many words ... so no KobeShow@CL I am not joking. _________________

Exactly! The early people in Britain created a beautiful thing called Stone Henge. Which upon greater observation by Archaeologists discovered that it has to do with the stars. _________________

Yeah MC, I wasn't disagreeing. I was agreeing with Dodgers just elaborating a little more as I am fascinated by Stone Henge. _________________
