He can't bring those if he's not able to get off of the bench. You want your end of the bench guy to be someone with potential, Mata has little to none. Coby is supposedly a good shooter who is pretty athletic. I'm all for giving Mata an invite, but I can't see him dethroning Coby for the last roster spot.

Actually, he started almost every game for them pretty much BEFORE Kevin Love came. His Senior year, last year, he sacrificed A LOT, I mean A LOT, & didn't complain much, true team player. Great all around guy.

How did he sacrifise? Love was better and got the PT, if dude was better than Love he would have seen more court time. It's not a sacrifise if the dude in front of you is way better.

Mata showed a very serviceable jump hook in his 4th year... for Mata, I think he needs some time in the D-League or Europe to refine his game. He obviously needs to fix his FT shooting, needs two go to post moves, and just understand passing angles and spacing better.

However, what he doesn't lack is heart, grit, a motor, and a solid understanding of team defense (damn that dude hedges screens like a freaking madman!!)

Don't you mean, if Lorenzo Mata wasn't Hispanic, this topic might not even exist?

Also, why would Karl matter? Mata would most likely be competing with DJ for a roster since they're bigs.

Power Forward & Center: 6-9, 240. Tough as hell type of guy, he'd easily be our toughest player, more than even Turiaf. I know he's no savior, lmao whatsoever.. all I'm sayin' is an invite sure wouldn't hurt. I mean for anyone here who tells me they'd rather have Coby Karl over him, I'm sorry, but I just gotta' laugh.

Has NO NBA experience, so you can't be sure how he will translate. Summer league invite, sure. Automatically better at our 15 spot than Karl? HELL NO, not with Sasha likely leaving.

I personally think Karl will be able to fill Sasha's shoes AND bring REAL defense to the backup SG spot, if he's given a chance.

It's okay, obviously I can tell some folks haven't seen this guy's game enough to know the TOUGHNESS he brings & other intangibles we lack. Apparently, most of these folks would take Coby Karl over him. All I'm suggesting is a summer league invite, that's all, or even after that, if he does well enough, a camp invite. I also like some other guys like Bryce Taylor, Davon Jefferson (of USC), & Demarcus Nelson (Duke).

Actually, you also said:

which tells me you are just simply writing off Karl and would take this guy on your official 15-man roster if the season started today.

Wtf, what are you trying to say about Chicano?

Well, he HAS been pushing BIG for Najera. I'm just sayin'...

That potentially controversial issue aside, DJ Mbenga has more skill and size than Mata, so he's not needed. Camp invite? Sure. But, there are better bigs available in free agency if we needed them. That's highly unlikely, though.

He also seems to have an injury problem:

Quote:
Underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Oct. 12, 2006; was sidelined four-to-five weeks and returned in time for the season-opener versus BYU ... missed two early season games in 2005-06 with a concussion (versus Coppin State and Nevada); also sat out 14 games from mid-January through early March with a non-displaced plateau fracture in the right tibia, suffered in the Washington State game on Jan. 12, 2006.

No thanks.

seems like every UCLA B-Ball player gets hurt at some point, Howland is too crazy with his practices.

It's arthroscopic I guess you don't want Kobe either because he had like 3 and Bynum had 1. Every player gets those.

Plus we're not talking a huge investment. We're talking a fricken camp invite. You don't even wanna give him a camp invite?!? Invite him to the Summer leauge, let's see how he plays out.

Mata shoots like 20% from the freethrow line. Until he learns to shoot free throws, he will not be on the court in an NBA game.

Chicano, how many guys do you want at summer league?

You have like 239302 threads with all these random people you want to invite to summer league ... and then when people say no you're like "cmon man, not even just for a summer league invite? harsh much?"

We can't invite every single human that's not in the NBA to summer league.

honestly mata is a poor mans david lee. Mata is servicable. There are a lot of powerfowards that don't get love but become really good.

milsap, landry, boozer and that one guy from the mavs... i forgot his name. haha

but those are undersized powerfowards that hustle and rebound. Can't see why mata can't be the same.

Heck , I believe Bruce Bowen wasn't even drafted or drafted really really late and he was a big part in all their championships.

He's a very poor mans David Lee. As for Bowen, he was undrafted and played overseas for years. He could be something similar, but Bowen wasn't in the league right away.

(The UCLA guy, Mata-Real) Does anyone have any idea if he'll be playing in the summer league & trying to make it onto a team? If so, anyone else agree with me that we should really try to give him an invite? He's somewhat of another version of Najera. He's not afraid to go in, do the dirty work & bang, get rebounds, boxes out unlike Lamar & Pau, defends tenaciously, all effort, all out hustle, fundamentals & smarts.. I think he'd definitely be able to help us more than Coby Karl, that's for sure.

Najera has some semblance of an offensive game. Mata has absolutely no offense whatsoever, aside from the occasional put-back. I loved Mata's hustle and effort at UCLA, but I don't even see him getting PT on a Euro squad. It would be an absolutely complete waste of a summer league roster spot.

Haha very funny, no exageres compa, I only made this one & the Gerald Green one. I DID mention a great list of other names for invites such as: James White, Davon Jefferson, Bryce Taylor, Demarcus Nelson, Julius Hodge, Chris Taft, & Dijon Thompson. You can never have too many quality invitees.. the more the better.. if you disagree with that and rather have no names with no resumes like Eric Chenowith, well then, that's you, lmao man10 .

I love UCLA, they're my team for life, but by NBA standards Mata sucks. He's a college player, a guy who does the dirty work in college and enjoys his time and moves on in life, he's not a ball player. He has no offensive game and in the NBA he wouldn't be a big shotblocker and rebounder, he's just an average guy at best. There's no way he'd make our team or any team as anything other than a 15th man, a body for insurance, to take fouls. His game is EXTREMELY limited.

That's about the only thing I like about him. That he lost his starting spot and didn't seem to moan and groan about it.

As far as being on the Lakers...no thanks. I'm not defending Karl either, I think he's a waste of space, but Mata doesn't belong either.

Ouch.

And Chicano, do you understand how many players out there are just like Mata? You could find someone much more experienced who's played in the league before for the same price.

Hell, I'd rather call Elton Brown and see what he's doing.
