I just got caught up about a week ago (thanks NBC.com for streaming your shows). The season finale was great.

And on to the news: 3 more years of Michael Scott

Quote:
Slash Film: Today the angels looking down on Scranton, Pennsylvania are crooning “Beers in Heaven.” Steve Carell has signed on to star as Dunder Mifflin’s quasi-top dog, Michael Scott, on NBC’s The Office for three more years. An understandably elated, Ricky Gervais, broke the news on his blog…

“Steve Carell (now one of the most bankable film stars in the world) has just signed up for another three years with us. He is the hardest working man in Hollywood and the harder he works the better it is for me. I mean… well done Steve you are wonderful. …Steve had to do months of that in Evan Almighty and I heard he didn’t complain once. He is a very nice man and deserves all his success.”

the news is a welcome surprise given Carell’s consistent box office draw in hit comedies (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine), sleeper dramas (Dan in Real Life) and passable summer fare (Get Smart). That this rare flexibility has worked out so well on both sides was no doubt a contributing factor in the deal. Why not celebrate by picking up some cupcakes on sale at the grocery store during your lunch break to cheer up your office’s fluorescent-lit hangout room? “That’s what she said!” is going nowhere.

Coming Soon.net: "The Wire" star Amy Ryan has joined "The Office" for multiple episodes next season, reports Variety.

Ryan is set to appear in at least five episodes in the fall, reprising her role as human resources rep Holly Flax. Ryan's character first showed up in "The Office's" season finale as a potential love interest for Michael Scott (Steve Carell).

In the season-four ender, "Goodbye, Toby," Ryan's character replaced long-suffering HR staffer Toby Flenderson, played by Paul Lieberstein.

3 more years? As big a fan as I am of the show (been a fan since the beginning), I don't know how it could last that long. I just don't see how the plot can advance that much. 3 more seasons means 60+ episodes. It's been 4 seasons, and it's already starting to drop off in my opinion. I see it jumping the shark in the middle of the 6th season at the latest. There is such a thing as "too much of a good thing".

I'm glad Amy Ryan is returning, and hopefully she'll turn into a series regular. She was great in "The Wire" (my all-time favorite show), and she's hot.

not many shows can run that long, scrubs is definitely one, been running like a well oiled machine since 01'. idk if The Office can do it, the show is good, but 7 seasons is tough to do.

Anyone else notice that the members of The Office are in a fair share of Apatow's movies?

Steve Carell (Michael) - 40 Year Old Virgin
Jenna Fischer (Pam) - Walk Hard, 40 Year Old Virgin
BJ Novak (Ryan) - Knocked Up
Phyllis Smith (Phyllis) - 40 Year Old Virgin
Mindy Kaling (Kelly) - 40 Year Old Virgin
Ed Helms (Andy) - Walk Hard
Craig Robinson (Darryl) - Walk Hard, Knocked Up, Pineapple Express (an extension of the Apatow group)

The Office hasn't shown any signs of letting up, and I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it...or cancel it.

That's the problem with American shows. The UK Office was only 2 seasons of 6 episodes (and a Christmas Special), and it's considered a great series. So when should they stop it? When it starts doing bad? Great shows finish in a timely, tasteful manner and when they're on top, not when they start a downward trend. A lot of American shows don't do that. All they care about is how much money it can make them. That downward trend ruins the legacy of the show. For the UK Office, the creators had a vision. They set out a plan and followed up with it. Here in America, there is no "plan". It's "let's milk this as much as possible so that we can maximize our profits."

I seriously doubt they have some great master plan for the next three seasons (roughly 75 episodes). The only reason they are extending it is because it's making them tons of money. They're going to wing it for the next 3 seasons (by probably following the same formula that worked for the first 4 seasons: keep making Michael Scott more stupid and more ignorant, add some pranks on Dwight, and mix in some Jam love/drama. Repeat.).

apatow said he likes to use people who hes worked with before, in prior tv shows, or movies, thats why there are always familiar faces.
And im pretty sure hes a fan of the office.

It's all about opinion....some people want to jump from one "hot" thing to another, after a few seasons of a show they start to get bored with it. Sounds like you might be in that group.

As for me, I like to find a show I enjoy and keep on watching. Seinfeld did 9 seasons of a show about NOTHING and it was my favorite show of all time. Now The Office is 4 seasons in and I don't like it any less now than I did at the start. I hope it keeps going after season 7 is up too...

Amy Poehler says she's bound for `Office' spinoff
By JAKE COYLE, AP Entertainment Writer Thu Jul 17, 10:46 AM PDT

Amy Poehler confirmed to The Associated Press that she'll be joining the planned "Office" spinoff, paving the way for her eventual exit from "Saturday Night Live" and promoting the comedian to primetime.

Speaking by phone Thursday shortly after her Emmy nomination for outstanding actress in a comedy series on "SNL," Poehler said she will join NBC's spinoff of "The Office." She's expected to star.

"I can kind of confirm that I will be working in some capacity on that show," said Poehler. "I don't really have any other details yet."
The 36-year-old Poehler has been a cast member on "Saturday Night Live" since 2001 and in recent seasons has served as a co-anchor on "Weekend Update."

Poehler, whose husband Will Arnett also received an Emmy nomination Thursday (for his guest performance on "30 Rock"), is pregnant and due this October. She plans to be part of the expanded fall schedule for "Saturday Night Live" during the election, but that what happens in the spring isn't clear.

"It's been quite a week," said Poehler of the negotiations. "I'm very excited about all the good stuff that's coming down the pike."

A spokesman for NBC said the network had no comment.

If you have 48 minutes to spare, it's worth watching.
