It's better for people to have low expectations and exceeding them than vice versa, which was what happened last season.

With Kobe out for most of the season I'm sure Season ticket renewals are down and we're now seeing first Mitch and now MDA trying to encourage the fan base...... Reality says we have a team led by a 40 year old Nash and a largely ineffective Pau for the majority this upcoming year. Other than those two we are not very good at all. Young, Farmar and Meeks are all deeply flawed players and Kaman is injury prone. Even if there is a miraculous meshing along with health we're still middle of the pack or slightly higher.

"A lot of combinations can happen," said D'Antoni. "The guys that come in [to camp] and win the battle -- they will they settle [the rotation] amongst themselves. I foresee 11 guys playing a lot of minutes."
"I would like it to be in theory but I'll have to watch the players and see where they can go with. Do we want to shoot a lot of threes? Yeah, that's kind of where the league is going," said D'Antoni. "If you look at it analytically, that's a better shot than the old traditional one inside the arc kind of jumper. It just mathematically makes sense that you want to try to get threes, layups and fouls."

The question for D'Antoni isn't the Lakers' offense.

"Can we come together as a group and defend? We're going to score. We've got a lot of scorers out there," he said. "If we can, we're going to be really good."

I really liked these parts.. It really is the direction the league is heading.. Deep teams that can go small running up the score & vets to take over in the playoffs.. I'm so eager to see what this team is going to look like.

Kobe's out most of the season? When did they announce that? We've heard anything from November, December to January, and most recently opening day, so I have no idea what to think. I do think 'Antoni is right here somewhat though, not that we will be good, we almost certainly won't, but that we can be better than most people think. Most have us written off and not in the playoffs, I think we can make the 8th seed.

He may come back in November but he won't be KOBE for most the season. That injury is very serious and time is more of a factor than dedication to rehab. My guess is that we won't see the real Kobe until February or so..... By that time we will have other injuries is my guess.

To get a Playoff spot we'd need just about everything to go perfectly...... And the unintended consequence would be that the hated MDA would probably win COY..... The thread that would generate would worth it alone...

I'm thinking that Kobe will play from the beginning of the season or very close, but I think Roo's right...if Kobe becomes Kobe it likely won't be until the All-Star Break. He's going to have to shake off rust, reacclimate his body to slightly different capacities/feels, and then regain his wind...all while trying to figure out what he needs to do with a largely new team. We'll see "good Kobe" for probably a third of the season.

Jeez Roo. :man3: Won't even break out the "D" name. Hey.....therealdeal ate a whole family of crows over something he was wrong about (well he said he would and have to take him at his word being a "mod"). Any chance you might offer up something in case we have a better team than the bummer of a scenario you're usually painting these days? Like we make it anywhere from 8th to 6th seed? :man12:

Edit and disclaimer..... Of course barring significant injuries like last year. Which is part of what you see.... granted.

I still have a family of them in the palm in my front yard but I'm not going there. I'm not as sure of our getting that high of a seeding as you are of us sucking. I just don't think we will suck that hard. Hey all in good fun.

I think come January, we'll get at least 80% Kobe. Which is still better than 100% Howard.

I'm pretty sure it's the fact that I'm biased by all the injuries we've seen Kobe push through, but I think he'll be much better much sooner than people think. Has there been anyone in the history of the game that made more adjustments & changed up their game to stay dominant despite limitations the way Kobe has? I don't think so.. He'll find a way to have the impact of a top 10 player regardless of how limited he is. If that means averaging 10 APG, if that means becoming a spotup shooter off the ball with Nash running the show, I think Kobe will find a way to be Kobe.

D'Antoni can't really say anything to anyone these days. :man10: People are going to hate him regardless...

That's okay though. I don't like him either, but I like his attitude and I like everything I've heard thus far from everyone around the team. There's an emphasis on youth, on development, on Pau, on defense... All good things.

Just keep your expectations low and this season will be fine.

I actually liked his brother Dan in the one and only interview I saw on line with him from early summer league time frame this year, he being the coach. Seemed more likable than other "Dan" and not an unbright guy. Not as "hicky" as Mike. Not saying Mike's not a smart guy either.

I think I saw the same video.. He also struck me as someone who knew what he was talking about.. I wasn't expecting that, I let my hatred for us hiring D'antoni over Phil influence me into assuming his brother was an idiot taking up an asst coaching job.. Reserving judgement until we see what they do with a team that actually fits their style.

:man10: Yep..... sadly and unfairly I was of the exact same frame. They should put mics in front of these other guys more often this year.

None of our coaches are "stupid" necessarily... They're just not Phil. So no matter what ANYONE was going to be disappointed.

The Lakers really shouldn't have even brought up Phil in the first place and we wouldn't have been so disappointed in D'Antoni. Compared to Brown I think he's a better coach. Compared to Phil he looks like rotten cheese.

:man10: Only if you will If I'm more or less correct. Based on the Howard evaluations I've offered for over nearly 2 years and what actually happened I won't hold my breath..... in good fun.... :man1:

This is what I see:
Kobe missing significant playing time and when he does play not being the old Kobe. Last year we barely made it to the playoffs with Kobe scoring 27 a game

Kaman replacing Howard.... Kaman is injury prone.

losing Antwan.... our best bench player

losing MWP..... other than Kobe the only Laker that brought it every night last season.

Adding Young and Farmar.... both can be good at time but reality is that they were available at this price for a reason. I think people get a little too excited with these "end of the bench" acquisitions. They will bring more than Morris and Ebanks for sure but they won't replace what we lost in Howard(vs Kaman) and Antwan.

Nash is 40 and really slowing down.... we will have new players at many positions again and Pau at Center. My guess is that we see significant missed time by some of our older players in addition to Kobe and the constant changing lineups we saw last year.

With all of that said.... I'm not so sure how we can win as many games as last year much less more. I'll look at it again after we go through training camp but we are going to struggle to score consistently until Kobe gets back and then it's back to one person carrying the bulk of it. Young has some ability but he can also shoot you waaaay out of games more times than into them.

Im not really sure why people tend to think that having Gasol at C is a good idea. He may play better offensively but the real problem is the defense. Just think about last season when Dwight was out of the game Gasol played C and other teams just took advantage of that. He is not shot blocker and his rebounding is suspect. He has huge problem with athletic players.

You're right, but he was even worse defensively at PF. Dude had ZERO mobility to play the PnR, rotate, or play any help D. Palms in the air was his calling card.

Yeah, it's the lesser of two evils. And hopefully the procedures he's had will give him a little more explosiveness. He was never that explosive to begin with though.

The key now will be team defense, not necessarily being dependent on our Center to block everything like we have been for the last few years.
