The Charlotte Bobcats have received permission to interview Los Angeles Lakers assistant Steve Clifford for their head-coaching job, a Lakers spokesman confirmed Friday.

Clifford, known for his defensive expertise, spent the previous nine seasons working for the Van Gundy brothers – first Jeff Van Gundy with the Houston Rockets, then Stan Van Gundy with the Orlando Magic.

When Stan Van Gundy’s tenure in Orlando ended, Clifford went to the Lakers to work for Mike Brown, who lost his job early this season. Brown’s replacement, Mike D’Antoni, installed Clifford as his lead assistant.

Clifford becomes the sixth known candidate to fill the opening created when the Bobcats fired Mike Dunlap last month. The others:

Former Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry and four assistants: Nate Tibbetts (Cleveland), Kelvin Sampson (Houston), Jeff Hornacek (Utah) and Elston Turner (most recently with the Suns). Rick Bonnell

another no name "CHEAP" coach who'll get fired by end of next season, MJ should consider selling his interested back to a real owner.

I had no idea who this guy was. And yet he was our "lead assistant" with "defensive expertise"?

Clifford should be cleaning the floors, how did the Lakers ever come up with the assumption that he's a lead assistant? what a joke.

The whole coaching staff is a joke, Chuck Person is supposed to be teaching shooting???? then why did Gasol shoot so poorly? and why did Meeks only should like 38% from the floor all year long? Bernie? his only success his whole career in coaching was the 4-1 record he had during the season while the Lakers were searching for a coach.

Yeah I think the whole coaching staff should be revamped.

I have seen as many Laker games this year as I possibly could, yet never recall seeing him. Why do I have the feeling some Laker players are saying the same thing as we are (who is this?). He didn't even need a mask to rob the Laker's organisation.

He is a good defensive coach and comes from the van gundy tree . Brown and dtanoni never game him a chance to come up with a defensive scheme.

chuck person is a highly respected coach in the NBA. He coached the lakers defense on phil jackson last year.

Chuck Person as good as he is "supposedly" in shooting practices made Gasol shoot his worse % in his career and made Meeks shoot 38% from the floor. please bring in someone that actually knows how to practice shooting.

Chuck also "made" Kobe shoot particularly well this year, but we're keeping that on the down low.

man what a sad state this team in. when no one even recognizes our "lead assistant" and what's worse, this guy was apparently a "defensive specialist." look how far that got us

one of the best parts about having phil as HC were his assistants. cleamons, hamblen, and especially shaw and rambis. they actually helped make a different as opposed to this bald dude, dan dan tony, season ticket holder eddie jordan, and whoever else we're unaware of that is on this pathetic staff

So this was the guy that was "responsible" for our defense? I do remember now he kind of came along with Dwight. But wow how invisible and ineffective if that was his main reason for being here. Did Dan even care enough about the D to clarify what Clifford's role was once Brown was out? Did anyone (sure didn't show) scout upcoming teams and come up with custom D plans for them?
