Brown on the PG rotation, Morris & Blake to see time at SG

Brown on the PG rotation, Morris & Blake to see time at SG

Postby JSM on Fri Oct 12, 2012 11:02 pm

I posted a couple blurbs from Brown in the Morris and Duhon threads about their role and their current opportunity. But I decided to make a new thread for these comments because they touch on several different threads (and rather than posting this in each of those threads...) and hits on a hot topic/concern among Laker fans here -- Brown's obsession with the two PG backcourt.

Image
Ramona Shelburne of ESPN wrote: It doesn't take a math whiz to look at the Los Angeles Lakers' backcourt options and notice there are four players on guaranteed contracts who are each generally regarded as point guards. Four point guards on a team that can dress 12 every game seems like a bit much.

So it's not all that surprising to read in ESPN.com's Marc Stein's piece Friday that the Lakers are very open to moving Steve Blake and/or Chris Duhon.

What that means in the short term is that Lakers coach Mike Brown's rotation is changing quite a bit from game-to-game as Blake, Duhon and second-year guard Darius Morris vie to be Steve Nash's primary backup.

"Nobody has really locked up that backup point guard spot yet," Brown said. "[Saturday] I'm thinking about giving Darius an opportunity and giving Duhon an opportunity another day and then maybe going back to Blake.

"I'm not sure yet, but I'm going to keep giving guys opportunities. Nobody has really locked up that backup point guard spot yet."

While the Lakers pretty much know what they'll get from Blake and Duhon, Morris is still something of a wild card. The Lakers like his size (6 feet 4), defensive ability and potential, but Brown says he needs to see him "play under control" and "stay within himself a little bit more."

Both of those characterizations are pretty common for young players, especially those who only get limited opportunities as rookies on a veteran team. Morris played in just 19 games as a rookie, averaging 8.9 minutes in those games. But when he got a chance to play on the Lakers summer league team, he shined, averaging 15.2 points, 4.2 assists and 3.6 rebounds in nearly 29 minutes per game in the five games he started.

Brown said he can also see both Morris and Blake playing minutes at the shooting guard position this season.

"Darius is a big guard so if he's out there, he can play the two sometimes," Brown said. "Same with Steve [Blake], he can play the two also. I look at them as guards, rather than just point guards."

Here's to hoping Mitch finds a way to dump all 3 of them before Brown makes last season's mistake...again.

I don't like what Blake gives us ... but he's still a lot better than both Duhon and Morris as a PG ...

As for the SHOOTING guard position , Blake was the player who gave up the most PPP in isolation in the ENTIRE league last season , Morris can't SHOOT ( can't play at all overall)

Didn't he already say that Ebanks might play SG?

So what is it now? We have 5 SG's? Kobe, Meeks, Morris, Blake, and Ebanks?

Sometimes I wonder what's going through his head.

Why sign Meeks if we aren't going to utilize his talents?

Turns out, Meeks will play center.

^^^^ as soon as a player has a good practice , he may have a chance to play with Brown ... our coach has no ability to put things in perspective and think rotations in the long term ... everything with him is on a daily/weekly at best basis ... that's why his rotations change every other 5 games during the season

This is either his (IMO pathetic) attempt to get his zen on and motivate Meeks........ or he's an idiot. Blake at SG last season was a disaster, and he's not only considering doing it again, but maybe tossing in Morris The Terrible for giggles as well?

Im going to wait until the regular season where it counts, but if MB is planning on changing his rotation every other game and/or f***ing around with stupid lineups line this, then he literally needs to be slapped. Hard.

After 10 days of training camp ,I think a shaky start for this team wouldn't be such a disaster ... thinking long term I sure don't want Clown to coach us against the likes of OKC and Miami in the playoffs

Are you fn kidding me?

He better not be serious with this.

Seriously how do you screw up this rotation? Mitch has put an adequate backup at every position (save SF perhaps).

Blake is the backup point guard unless Duhon surprises us.
Meeks is the backup shooting guard. End of story. It's what we signed him for.
Ebanks is the backup small forward, as that's his natural position.
Jamison is the backup power forward. NOT backup small forward, seeing as he hasn't played that position in years.
Backup center is Jordan Hill ... or even moving Gasol to the 5 when Howard goes to the bench.

Darius Morris should not be seeing any sort of playing time because he absolutely sucks.

It's so straightforward it's almost impossible to screw it up.

Leave it to Brown though.

I'm not rooting for the guy to fail, because he's the Lakers' coach . . . but when he does so many stupid things . . . it's so damn difficult to like him.

Slava laughed at the suggestion his skills might be affected by the down time. "Are you kidding?" he said. "Basketball is like ball. It's all a circle."

I guarantee you Brown will play Steve Nash 40 minutes a game if it's mean to save his job. :disagree:

Is he insane?

What's wrong with

Nash/Blake
Kobe/Meeks
Metta/Ebanks
Pau/Jamison
Dwight/Hill?

Give Pau some minutes at the 5 and find something for CDR to do and we're set.

I mean, is it really that complicated? :man3:
