GP on D12, Kobe, and the Lakers

Marc J Spears of Yahoo wrote:Q: As a former Los Angeles Laker, what do you think about the situation with Dwight Howard leaving the Lakers?

A: "It's a player doing what he wants to do. The Lakers knew what they were getting into when they got him. They gambled and lost the game. Kobe Bryant, to me, is still the best basketball player in my mind. He played with me and he was in my era. I still love him to death. He's a little brother to me. They're going to struggle for a little while, and Kobe is on his way out. He has two more years to his contract and they will probably sign him back another two years and try to rebuild. They're going to struggle. It's going to be a hard time to the Lakers fan, but they will come back. It's going to be a transition that they will get through."

I don't understand it.. Jamison & now GP both acknowledging Kobe as still being the best player in the league or atleast saying there's an argument.. But neither seem to think we have much of a chance of building a winner around him before he's done. If Kobe's still Kobe I don't think we're as far away as most seem to think. 1 good star addition via free agency or trade where we take on salary & spending wisely next offseason.. I don't see why we can't get right back in the hunt.

Assuming that's true, we need to acquire lottery picks or make miraculous trades if we want something to happen. Kobe will be 35 next season, and he's not getting any younger. Kareem eventually gave up his chair to Magic when he got older. We can't just go out and get a "sidekick" for Kobe. We need a major player who will take over the reigns for the future.

So far, everything seems to be riding on Pau's $20 million expiring.

Bottomline, don't be upset if we're not going to be contending for awhile.

It's gonna be fun. Let's make the play-offs. Don't want to taint Kobe's legacy with another non-playoff year. After that, let's get KD.

Hmmm..... He didn't get called passive aggressive or a Debbie downer for pointing out the facts....

^ They're asking about his upcoming HOF induction, so he's making the rounds. He has a gig for Fox Sports now, I believe.

GP's currently doing TV work for Fox Sports Live on the new FoxSports channel. My guess is that he has reasons not to say anything too critical.

Kobe is not the best player any more. They are taking his entire career into account when they shouldn't. There is no way Kobe is as good as LBJ or Durant right now. Everyone else you can make a case for, but those two are just on another level.
