This.

I've been saying this for awhile. Jimmy and Mitch have my respect when it comes to home run deals. But they seem to have a knack for drafting poorly, overpaying scrubs, and missing out on solid role players during free agency.

I've also been on board suggesting that we are overall below average at the smaller moves- seem to always miss out on the guys who's willing to take the vet min and can actually compete.

Barnes, Barbosa, Pietrus, etc.

At this point, it seems that with Hill getting all the back 5 and 4 mins, Jamison is going to be playing backup 3. Signing Barnes would have meant (or at least does now) either he or Twan gets no mins.

Let's see if MDA frees Ebanks

What's up with Devin Ebanks?

It has been six games since Devin Ebanks last appeared in a game for the Los Angeles Lakers. The time frame coincides with the amount of games the team has played since Mike Brown was fired, but the dearth in playing time also started immediately following Ebanks being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Ebanks appeared in four of the Lakers' first five games under Brown to start the season and averaged 2.5 points and 2 rebounds on 23.1 percent shooting in 10.3 minutes per game.

According to Lakers spokesman John Black, Ebanks being benched is a basketball decision, not a disciplinary act. Not only has Ebanks not played in the past six games, he wasn't even dressing for the first three, as Darius Johnson-Odom took his spot on the active roster. Steve Blake's abdominal strain has had Ebanks back in uniform the past three games, at least.

"To my knowledge, it's a basketball decision," Ebanks told ESPNLosAngeles.com before the Lakers hosted the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday. "I just still got to remain professional and keep working and be ready for my number to be called."

Ebanks is still being paid while he is out of the rotation, so the benching is not considered a suspension. He is due back in court Dec. 7 to address the DUI charge. A suspension could be levied if Ebanks is found guilty at that time, as is NBA procedure whenever a player faces legal troubles.

"I can't speak on that right now," Ebanks said when asked about the arrest.

Ebanks being out of the lineup has opened up playing time for Jodie Meeks to get a chance as Kobe Bryant's backup at shooting guard. Meeks has not exactly seized the opportunity, averaging just 3.2 points on 28.5 percent shooting in the past six games.

New Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said his decision regarding Ebanks has been a matter of familiarity.

"I don’t know him," D'Antoni said. "In that sense, I haven’t watched him that much. We haven’t really practiced that much, so [you've] got to give me some time to evaluate and see what the team needs. But, obviously, he’s a talent and he’s there and we’ll see going forward. I just couldn’t tell you today what I envision today, because I don’t have that yet."

Ebanks agreed.

"I haven't really talked to him personally, really, like one-on-one,” he said of D’Antoni. “I'm sure as the season goes we'll start to talk a little more."

Even though Ebanks is out of the rotation, it's a long season. At some point over the course of the next 71 games he will likely get a second look. Especially if Meeks keeps struggling.

At 6-foot-9 and 215 pounds, Ebanks has the frame to run the floor in D'Antoni's system. He also has an improved form on his jump shot from working on holding his follow-through, rather than pulling his arms back after his release. But it has yet to show up statistically; Ebanks is shooting just 1-of-5 on 3-pointers this season after going 0-of-9 last season.

"His system is, pretty much, keep the floor spread," Ebanks said. "That's definitely something I like. I need some space to cut, pick-and-rolls. I like his offense so far, just on things he's been running and putting in. I definitely like where he's going."

I'd like him to come back now.

If he could hit his threes like he was during preseason he can definitely contribute in this system. Lets hope he impresses MDA and he gets some PT, because it seems we're not going to cut/trade him so we might as well continue to develop him.

^what is the NBA rule that he's violating?

I'm not too familiar with the NBA's social media rules

Edit* never mind I found it.

The NBA formally announced its new social media guidelines Wednesday, informing teams through a league memorandum that the use of cell phones, PDAs and other electronic communications devices -- and thus accessing Twitter, Facebook and similar social media sites -- is now prohibited during games for players, coaches and other team personnel involved in the game.

The league has defined "during games" as the period of time beginning 45 minutes before the opening tip and ending "after the postgame locker room is open to the media and coaches and players have first fulfilled their obligation to be available to media attending the game."

For all of Ebay's recent problems, dude really stood up tonight in a tough loss against the Knicks.

I think it's time for MDA to invest in him a little more. He's young, long, quick, athletic, can defend and can score. Why not give him some more minutes? Who else is playing consistently well off the bench?

Finally a good outing out of this jerk. If he could play like that consistently he'd be worth having on the team.

And take a step or two inside the three point line, your bricks are truly awful from out there.

And what happened to this kid's athleticism? I remember him skying for alley-oops when he first got here now I don't think I've seen him dunk in a year.

That should (hopefully) change with the return of Nash.

Well it really has to do with him as well. Run a little bit young man!

The entire reason I liked him getting minutes was because a) he's young b) he's a defensive type guy c) he'd worked on his jumper and d) he is fairly athletic.

But so far this season we haven't seen much of any of that. Part of that is because he's an idiot and he got a DUI and part of that is because he hasn't been playing much. But a huge part of it is that he doesn't want to dive and cut. Move around young fella and the ball will find you. Watch some tapes of Trevor Ariza as a Laker.

Did a decent job at PF tonight with Jordan Hill hurt. I say decent because he's not really suited for the position.

Hopefully Hill is healthy on Sunday.

He looked strange out there, a little uncomfortable sometimes, but...

he got out on the break! :sing:

Just what I was asking for... get out and get easy shots and easy buckets in transition. He, Meeks, Duhon off the bench is going to be nice when we heal up.

He has the potential to be a decent SF coming off the bench. He just has consistency issues. Let's hope he stays consistent...

Really? Maybe because Barnes totally sucked in the playoffs two straight years. Not to mention his legal troubles during the summer.

Yeah, you're right. I forgot Mike Brown gave him an opportunity last year in the beginning of regular season, and Devin lost his job. Additionally, the FO gives him a contract and releases Barnes essentially investing the backup bench role to Devin. Then he gets caught for a DUI.

We have given him opportunities, and he blew it. Legal issues or not, this might be his last chance go make an impression, and I hope he does. But let us not act like the consistency issues aren't his fault because that's an excuse.

I was talking about Barnes. :man10:

Barnes had legal trouble and came up short in the playoffs twice. During the summer it seemed easy enough for me to understand that Barnes wasn't going to fit here and that we needed to get younger and more athletic. Hence giving Ebanks that chance. He showed early that he had worked on his shot, he didn't want to sign this season until the Howard situation was resolved because he wanted to stay in LA. I mean, he said and did the right things...

up until the season started. The kid is too comfortable and isn't focused on playing the game enough. DUIs? Especially during the season? Get serious young fella. We don't have time for that crap.

All that being said, he's played well recently and we need him to. Even with Artest being better than last season, we still need that change of pace off the bench. Watching him run the floor last game was EXACTLY why I wanted to keep him. He's actually a more talented player than Barnes, but he's not even close to the same kind of worker. If he put in the constant effort and did the dirty work that Barnes did, this wouldn't even be a conversation.

^^ I agree. I've always been intrigued by this kid. I was upset at the treatment he got at the hands of Brown last year. Then all the jostling by Brown to stick him in Jodie's place at the backup 2 earlier this season which was idiotic.

The guy has the tools to be a pretty decent SF. Play him there and let him develop.

Unfortunately the kid shot himself in the foot with that stupid DUI. Luckily for him his contract wasn't voided and he still has a chance to make a showing for himself.

I still would have preferred to pick up Pietrus though.
