I don't understand the offense

I don't understand the offense

Postby Ludachris on Tue Jan 22, 2013 4:10 pm

Why is it that Kobe isn't doing more Rip Hamilton and Reggie Miller and running around screens for the majority of his shots? Why is he doing so much iso, keeping the ball out of Nash's hands? Why not have Nash handle the ball until one of 20 screens opens someone up for a shot? Why is Howard not setting tons of back screens? Why is it when Howard sat down the last time against Chicago last night and Gasol was in, he still stayed up near the 3 point line most of the time instead of posting up on Noah who had 5 fouls? Why does nobody not named Jamison drive to the hoop? Why has nobody taught Gasol, Howard, or Clark how to set a truly effective high screen for Nash? Or showed them how to roll to the hoop afterward? Doesn't the coach see how bad those screen attempts are?

I'm just wondering, that's all.

D12 and Pau screens aren't very good.

Sacre sets better picks than either of them do.

they're better off scrapping whatever offense they're trying to play and just play pick up ball...there's enough talent alone to win more than 17 effing games

the offense looked way better when bernie was just letting them freelance out there. get rid of d'antonis system and focus solely on defense.

I thought that last night, Dwight set some decent screens. Of course, it was just one game, but Nash finally got some easy looks that he knocked down.

I don't understand Kobe doesn't realize he's shooting his team out.

Most importantly, I don't think 15 guys wearing P&G understand the offense, either.

Maybe Nash, but once double-teamed, he's completely useless. Not all his fault; everyone's just standing around not getting open.

Sacre rolls better than either of them, too. If only he could play better defense. Do some plyometrics to get some extra lift off the ground.

It's not that Kobe is shooting his team out of the game, it's that NOBODY else is shooting them back in.

Antoni's offense thrives on the PnR. We've got a great PnR PG. Problem is we've got no one for Nash to PnR with.

That's the problem.

Problem #2: Shooters.

Well if there ever was a $1,000,000 question...

Good observations though, clearly you do more game analysis than MDA.

We ran more successful PNRs with Blake and Bynum than we are with Nash and Howard. Figure that one out.

D'Antoni is way in over his head. He's clean out of ideas. You can tell looking at him on the sidelines sometimes. He just looks totally baffled.

I dont understand why dwight suddenly cant PNR anymore.. he did it 100 times a game when he was in ORL with nelson with some pretty good results. I didint watch the magic much till the playoffs but I can remember a number of plays with him setting the pick near the top of the arch then rolling for a sick oop

^^^ It has something to do with the whole defense sitting in Nash and D12's laps because the other people on the floor aren't floor spacers.

Common theme between both Nash's success in Phoenix and D12's success in Orlando was that they had shooters at virtually every position.

Kind of like what the Heat have and what the Mavs had in their championship year. A bunch of shooters leaves the lane free to roll, on our team no one is a dead eye shooter, so teams let us shoot and take away the higher percentage shots.

If you want Nash or D12 to dominate the pick and roll, need to put some guys on the floor that can space the floor. Or at the very least guys like Clark and Hill that can move off the ball. Everyone else besides them are statues so it's easy to help off when you know their man isn't going to move.

When Dwight was in Orlando and ran the P&R with Nelson, they had shooters that could actually do what they were supposed to do. Therefore, Dwight got wide open lanes for the roll and easy hoops. Lakers' shooters have been crap minus Nash and Metta (most nights).

Nash and Gortat was a good fit because Gortat was equally if not more athletic and agile than Dwight when finishing around the rim. He could also knock down a mid-range jumper consistently, and HIT FREE THROWS. Like Orlando, they were also surrounded with shooters.

I really wish we could have seen what Phil could have done with this roster. I really think it would have been MAGICAL.
