D12 Discussion: Dwightmare over! (1139)

Re: Dwight Howard Discussion (And so it begins...)

Those moves are great. Hakeem was using them a lot and he was very fun to watch. Amazing footwork in the post. Dwight can do those moves in practice, but in game...? He will just use his strength and quickness to bully his way under the basket and then he'll either try to dunk it, or shoot the lefty hook. He does have the agility to do more, but he never remembers to actually try some of these moves. Jab, spin, fadeaway, shooting off the glass? Yes please.

Although I can't say that he's not effective. He does score a lot, he rebounds, blocks shots and plays D. Maybe that's enough, I don't know. But if I was him, I would work on that post game some more and try out one or two moves every game.

I'm looking forward to January when he's really close to himself. Last night was the first time I saw significant progress physically. I expect another jump about a month from now

He just needs to keep his body between the ball and the defender. When he goes up he shows the ball too much.

He could pretty much jump over anyone, which he was doing before, he's just currently not in shape to do so. He just needs to gather himself and power up instead of extending out to try a shot.

^He needs to stop doing face-up moves and do b2b moves instead. He'll protect the ball better.

maybe his leg strength is still an issue. backing down is harder to do leg wise than facing up. my guess is it's related to his legs. he's made improvement, but he's still a month or two away

Well, if he's going to face-up, then he needs to develop a J like Pau has. The Spurs defenders aren't dumb like the Sactown and Golden State defenders. They know Dwight doesn't have a J, and they're not going to come out. They're going to sit back in the weeds and wait for him to drive, then smack the ball out of his hands.

Hopefully, the other teams didn't watch the Spurs game. Or else we're going to see more of the same.

Can't say he's wrong, with Dwight's talent and athleticism he should have averaged closer to 30 than 20 when he was the franchise player, but then Dwight is no Shaq and I don't see him ever being as good.

shaq was an anomaly, nothing ever like him. Dwight should be aiming for hakeem

nobody can be shaq because noone can be 7-1 320lbs run and move like he's 6-9 with touch like he's 6-6

shaq was a specimen until the chicken wings and pizza got a hold of him. shaq could have been easily the GOAT. without question. he could have done it all if he stayed in shape.

he does do that. well he did in orlando. he is incapable right now. no lift in his legs. it's improving. he was getting higher last night and double jumping more. also seemed lighter on his feet, but he's still got a long ways to go. he's getting tired pretty quickly still as well

Some interesting stats on Dwight so far....

- Career high personal fouls (PF) - 3.6
- 2nd lowest defensive rebounds - 7.4
- 2nd worst FT% - 50.6%
- 2nd lowest defensive rebounds - 11.1
- 2nd highest TO - 3.6

Now here's the good....

- 3rd highest offensive rebounds - 3.8
- Career high in assists - 2.1
- 3rd highest blocks - 2.5
- Career high FG% - 62.5%

Now here is Bynum last year versus Howard so far this year....

Howard: 19.3 PPG; 11.1 RPG; 2.5 BPG; 2.1 AST; 62.5% FG; 50.6% FT
Bynum: 18.7 PPG; 11.8 RPG; 1.9 BPG; 1.4 AST; 55.8% FG; 69.2% FT

It's a little odd that Bynum was rebounding better than Dwight. Still, it's early.

Rebounding is an effort stat, effort and stamina are correlated

Howard is still a month or two away. He himself said he wouldn't be himself until midseason. Steve Clifford assistant coach formerly with Orlando said Dwight was 2 steps slow about 3 weeks ago.

That's all related to his rebounding. The stats he's putting up considering hes 2 steps slow are pretty amazing to me. If he's truly 30+ games from being himself then we can only imagine how good he's going to be when he is healthy, has his stamina and lift

JGC: Good research, but in terms of his rebounds, I'm thinking the small sample size combined with his lack of legs/conditioning is hurting him in that dept.

The offensive boards make sense....his lack of touches are down cause he's gotta haul in the misses that this team of chuckers is putting up. Dwight is saying all the right things right now (probably cause of the firestorm he faced with Dwightmare), but Worthy brought up his lack of touches last night...Dwight said that it will eventually come, but whatever is better for the team, he'll do. His Kwamitis is leading to TOs that are costing him touches...but I still think LA really isn't trying to set him up as much. That could eventually become a problem going forward. He's not a back to the basket type of player, but that's cause LA is not really looking for him inside. He's gotta develop that aspect of the game (plus it will lead to less TOs...its when he faces up that he's losing the ball) in order to be dominant like Dr. Shaq has alluded to.

Small sample size probably has a lot to do with it. He has like, one stinker in there bringing many of his averages down (though he does have some big games to pad them too). We have a lot of anomalies in our players' stats.

I do think the high PF despite lower mins and like you said, the lower defensive rebounds is a good indication he is not 100%. My guess is his FG% is high because he's getting a lot of his points from offensive rebounds that he's getting from our other players misses.
