Dwight is a great player to have, but Im just worried the lakers will over pay for him. He is not a max player, he literally has no post moves and can't shoot a free throw to save his life. All of his shots are on pick and rolls. He is basically a rich man's tyson chandler, but its still better than bynum who doesn't even play.

Where were you last June?...... :man10:

Howard will get the max for a lot of reasons. As you noted the offensive end of the floor may not be one of them but for the leagues marquis team in the largest market post moves aren't all that's important. Howard is a marketing decision IMO. He's the best we could secure for the post Kobe era. For ownership he's a face of the franchise and for the team he's the best overall big in the game. Gotta start somewhere after Kobe goes.

I'm not sold in the least that he's a guy that can lead a team to a championship and I am concerned that the CBA will not allow us to get that guy either.

yeah, i also really dislike how the refs "keep it even". for example, once they called scola for a hold, you knew, 100%, that howard was going to get an offensive foul called on him within two possessions--whether he deserved it or not. and you knew scola wasn't going to be whistled again for his wrestling tactics.

oh, and if regular tyson chandler makes 15 per, then i'm pretty sure rich man's tyson chandler can get the max.

I agree with you 100%. I would rather build around CP3, or if we had both CP3 and dwight (pipe dream) I hope D12 works with the cap on some post moves and it should be ok. Now, everytime I see howard in the post these are the three things I expect to happen 1. gets striped or blocked 2. misses the shot 3. gets fouled and misses two free throws.

dwight never dominated with his post moves. why? because he doesn't have any. he did it all on athleticism but since his back still isn't at 100% he's been limited all season. if his back ever fully recovers, we'll see the dwight we all remember seeing a few years ago

Cp3 who couldn't and still can't get out of the 2nd round over Dwight Howard who took his team to the finals

Makes sense.

I don't like CP3 at all, but that's not really a fair argument to make it out to be that simple. CP3 has always run into superior teams in the playoffs, like the Spurs and Lakers, it's a lot harder in the West, that he took his teams as far as he did is impressive enough alone. Dwight got a team to the Finals that was perfectly designed for him, in a down year in the East. People take what his teammates that season for granted, they had a great run. But, they played Philly (always 1st round fodder), Boston without KG, and Cleveland who the Magic were a terrible matchup for. I give Dwight all the credit in the world for the Cleveland series though, his numbers were ridiculous, he got them to the finals from there for sure, just saying Cleveland wasn't a superior TEAM. CP3 always runs into superior teams and hasn't been able to carry his teams past them as he does carry his teams all regular season usually. Just saying, not really a fair comparison, totally different circumstances, though I wouldn't build around CP3 either because of his nagging injury issues every single season.

Let's be completely honest: every year is a "down year" in the east.

Well, not at that time, at that time the Celtics were the defending champs before KG went down and that cost them getting back, and Cleveland with LeBron was I believe leading the East record-wise as usual and a lot of teams feared them. But the Magic were a terrible matchup for the Cavs and Dwight tore them up, I just don't think they'd have gotten by Boston if KG was in, so it's not like Dwight did something CP3 couldn't do if he were in an easier conference with perfect circumstances. Like the Cavs in '07, LeBron was great, but their road to the finals was easy as could be, the road was paved, the teams were marshmallow soft other than Detroit who were just ancient by then.

Center of Importance

Look no further than Dwight Howard’s split stats in Lakers wins and losses to see how critical his play is to the team:

WINS (36): 18.7 ppg, 59.1% FG’s, 50.2% FT’s, 13.1 rpg, 2.9 bpg, 1.4 spg, 35.5 mpg
LOSSES (33): 13.9 ppg, 52.4% FG’s, 47.6% FT’s, 11.8 rpg, 1.9 bpg, 0.7 spg, 35.3 mpg

Howard’s general play has improved considerably of late as he gets healthier and more comfortable with his role, and indeed, his numbers are generally up since the All-Star break. His biggest improvement has come on the glass (14.7 up from 11.8) and on defense in general, while the rest of the numbers are similar (16.8 ppg from 16.3).

But, clearly, the team has gone as he has, the difference as plain as day in those W/L splits.

I wish they would have shown both FG attempt and FT attemps averages for both wins and losses

My point was that it's ridiulous to say I wish we had Chris Paul instead of howard when the guy has accomplished nothing and in reality less than Dwight has

D12 can work all day and night with Hakeem on post moves. Nothing will change unless the dude develops some sort of touch around the rim.

As long as he rebounds and block shots like a monster, he'll be getting the max. Superman returns next season.

More truth. That's because Pau would allow the opp's team to go 20/25 in the paint.

We agree on Dwight.... however CP3 is just about my least favorite player in the game today. He's more concerned with cheating in a blatantly premeditated fashion than actually being the leader he gets waaaaay too much credit for. He's a ball dominant guard that isn't a scorer and too small to effectively play defense against either OKC or Miami. Without the ball on offense he's nearly useless. Add in bone on bone in his right knee as well....

Pop and SA took him completely out of his game last year.... it was a thing of beauty and very revealing. That type of point guard rarely if ever wins championships. Having 90% of your meaningful possessions doinated for 20 seconds by a 6'1" point guard becomes easy to defend as teams can plan for it in a series of games. What he does he does well..... but he doesn't do enough to warrant the time he has the ball in his hands.... and without it he's not a contributor.

Waaay overrated IMO.
