GEORGE MIKAN 1953 Comic Book AD

GEORGE MIKAN 1953 Comic Book AD

Hey guys,

Just a bit of fun. I go down to San Diego every year to the annual Comic-Con for business and pleasure. I was just looking through a variety of old comics I picked up there last weekend and came across this back cover ad on a 1953 Dell Disney comic book. I've got a large collection of old comics and have never seen this ad before. Anyway, thought I'd share this vintage piece of pop culture Lakers history.

Why is the arm so huge and white in just the one image?

So when MIKAN shoots through a double team everyone cheers for Wheaties, but when KOBE does it...

Well done. In fact, this sort of stunned me a little bit. For whatever reason, I thought the notion of double-teaming was more of a "modern" concept, but I guess Mikan set the tone for trying to deal with dominant big men.

Well Mikan at the time was just one of those players that was so ridiculously overpowering that the defenses needed to do whatever it took to take him out of it. I don't know if the terminology was the same back then, but I'm sure he had to have seen his share of double teams.

Evil cigarette companies using subliminal advertising to children via comic books.....

I think John Edwards should be notified right away..... Wheaties is obviously complicit and a new tobacco lawsuit is justified.....

Well they could and did play defense any way they could in those days. Also the lane was only 8 feet wide then, think keyhole and remember "Hoosiers". He was the first dominant big man in the game, essentially had no rivals. Whereas Wilt had Russell and Thurmond to contend with some years later.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
