If he gets in the HOF then his Jersey gets retired that is the way the Lakers have done it with the exception of Shaq (Dr. Buss wishes). I don't think he has done enough to be in the HOF though.

Only hall of famers in the rafters. Horry was a clutch role player that came through in big moments, but likely not enough. If you do his, how many more must you consider? Yikes.

only reason i posted was because of this article

http://www.lakersnation.com/lakers-news ... 013/09/15/

By Dan Duangdao| September 15, 2013|

NBA: All Star Game-Saturday Night Participants Press Conference

This past week, Gary Payton was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame. The one-time Laker averaged 16.3 points and 6.7 assists in his career and was the 1996 Defensive Player of the Year. Payton made three Finals appearances, where he eventually won his one and only championship with the Miami Heat in 2006.

Another former Laker is also eligible for the Hall of Fame, and there is much debate about Robert Horry’s chances. While he didn’t put All-Star numbers like Chris Webber, Alonzo Mourning, Anfernee Hardaway, or Eddie Jones, Horry is considered one of the greatest clutch performers in the game. He wasn’t any ordinary role player as he has the fourth most championships in NBA History with seven and is one of only two players to win with three different teams.

With players like Allen Iverson, Vince Carter, and Tracy McGrady expected to be future Hall of Famers, Horry deserves recognition as a winner who played his role to perfection and added to the legacies of Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and Tim Duncan.

probably a false rumor but, i dont know articles make me want to dream of Fish up in the rafters.

i grew up watching shaq, kobe, fisher, shaw, fox era (eddie and nick too before them) and i have such an attachment (bromance) with fisher and kobe, that i just wish there was some way we can retire his jersey

Besides the HOF prerequisite, doesnt fisher DESERVE it?

It has been discussed and canvased here time and time again. IMHO, Horry should be in the HOF but should not have his number retired. In terms of numbers being retired, Fisher is more likely than Robert because more of his heroics were done in LA, Robert spread it out over 3 teams (ignoring the ill-fated layover in Phoenix).

if fish deserves it, so does scott, cooper, horry, fox, etc etc

i love horry but he's not a HOFer. he was never the best or 2nd best player on a title team. in fact, he was arguably as high as 3rd best on the laker teams. but you could make that argument for fish or fox during those years as well.

i do think we should do a 3-peat appreciation night though. it's been over a decade since those teams, and it'd just be fun to revisit with that group.

There's got to be a limit set somewhere for Hall of Fame players, doesn't there?

Horry was one of the greatest role players of all time. He hit big shots over and over and over again with three different teams. He should be recognized as a fantastic role player.

But he's not a Hall of Fame player. The Hall of Fame should be reserved for only the greatest players in the League. If he WAS inducted into the Hall of Fame, then the Lakers would probably retire his jersey. It's been their stance from day one and it should continue.

To piggy-back Reals post:

You have:

1. SUperstars
2.Stars
3. Great Role Players
4. Role Players
5. Also rans

If Rob, as a great Role Player, makes the HOF then what about the "stars" who more likely had more responsibility, more numbers etc..etc.. than what any great role player could do. I just can't see how anyone justifies putting him in. The teams he played on do not win without him but he was also able to be successful in a very confined box. If he goes in then his Jersey goes up.

The HOF is a not exactly a purely performance based group. However all credibility would go out the window if Horry made it in. He routinely underperformed in the regular season only to outperform a few high profile times in the post season. If not for a few huge shots he was a very talented underachiever.

I always liked Horry ever since his Rockets days and was ecstatic when he joined the Lakers. Seven rings is a statement of his value. But at the same time, he was a constant regular season underperformer. Drove Ainge nuts (channel towel throwing episode). Only on the Jackson and Popovich teams was his niche found as a bench guy all year, not to be relied on too much during the season, but money during the playoffs.

If he had consistently performed during the regular season as he did in the playoffs then we'd have a legit debate on our hands. But he didn't and IMO, the HOF is based on the totality of the player's contributions to the teams he played for or for some other significant contribution he made to the game. John Salley is the only other player with rings from 3 teams, but he's not an HOF'er so no precedent there.

Fisher, Cooper, et al were valuable contributors but their talent was never HOF quality. So their numbers shouldn't be retired.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I think Horry should get into the HOF. So should Fisher. But they don't need their jerseys retired.

Big Shot Rob was a role player. He was never a superstar or secondary star on any team he was on, so basically no, he shouldn't be in the hall of fame. The hall of fame is supposed to be transcendant talents.

Disagree^. An all-star is based on talent, stats, not intangibles. No Horry, no ring(s). He won them with multiple teams too, Rockets, Lakers, Spurs. He has my vote.

Fisher... gets my vote too. :jam2:

Not as a Laker legend, but i do think Horry should be induct into the HOF.
When you win 7 championships on THREE different teams while contributing and making clutch plays, thats no luck, thats skill.
Can't recall a player who did something like that.
HOF, as its name, shouldent be about stats. its about special basketball players doing special things.
If you look up at highlights from those championship videos there's always that Horry clutch play.
as a rookie scoring in 1994 Finals game 7, and the big three at 1995 in Houston.
The big three that gave the Lakers the win over Sacramento and later the championship (and other clutch plays)
And the 2005 Finals in Spurs uniform hiting the three with 5 sec left against Detroit scoring 21 points in the 4th querter and overtime, at age 34.

He is not like Fisher and other role players. He prefected that part.
(and to me he was a great defender for his size).

^^He was a career underachiever and a malcontent for 80% of his career as well. People seem to not remember where he was drafted and the press he was getting. Basically he was a bust until some of the shots started falling.

I loved what the guy did in the clutch in 7 or 8 laker playoff games.... but there were stretches of other playoff games where he essentially didn't show up. People remember the shot but forget the rest.

If I had to list Laker Role Players that I've seen play in person Horry would be below Cooper, McAdoo (role player with us), Green, Rambis, Fisher and Fox.

Fox never hit the big shot but he was our Bowen for a number of years and was just as much of a difference maker as a role player as Horry was. You shouldn't get into the HOF for 12 shots you made in your career anymore than Fox should for playing great D and doing the little things to support Kobe and Shaq.

Cooper is the best role player we've ever had..... and it's not even close.
