Howard needs Rick Barry

Time for the Lakers to bring in Rick Barry to teach Howard to shoot free throws underhand. Barry taught center Charles Johnson to shoot that way and he went from 50% to 80%. Howard can't look any more stupid shooting underhand as he looks shooting free throws now.

Stars today will not do this, they would rather shoot poorly than look "silly" and shoot well.

OP, if you were a pro baller would you shoot FT underhanded? I know if it works you should but theres a thing called pride/ego that gets in the way.

and how do you guys know going under handed works for Howard? Just cause it worked for Berry doesn't mean it will work for Howard. For all we know he could still suck at that and embarrase himself even further.

Howard needs a hypnotist.

Heard on the radio today. Ramona Shelbourne said that D12 hits 80% of his FT's in practice. They apparently keep count!

yeah man. With that info, it's obvious it's all in D12's head. It's like a self defeating attitude/prophecy or whatchamacallit. (<----lol CL spellchecker thinks its a word?)

it's all confidence

he makes them all in practice because his mind is telling him that it's just practice and there's nothing to lose whereas in the game with added pressure he misses them all because he just thinks about it too much. one miss and it's all downhill from there

Two things.... How's Howard's pride and ego doing after shooting below 50% last year? His "style" may be intact but that's about it...

Second, underhand, overhand, one handed.... it doesn't matter because this thing isn't in his hands.... it's in his head and has been since he got in the League. We may see a little improvement but this is who he is by this point in his career I'm afraid....

Personally if I could shoot significantly better underhand I wouldn't even care if it looked stupid. In fact, shooting underhand looks so stupid it's hilarious. I'd embrace that to the fullest. But then again it depends on the type of player I'm trying to project to people. If I were Shaq, Howard, or even say Nate Robinson I think the gimmick would run well. However, imagine being LeBron, Kobe, or MJ and you're trying to be that cold-blooded killer (ok, scratch LeBron) shooting underhand...

Also I forgot, the biggest thing for your ego is a ring :)

His shooting form isn't the worst we've seen ... it's mainly a mental issue .. Noah is a 72% career FT shooter and he's shooting the ball like a spinning top

I can live with 47% if he goes to the line 20 times per game,

but its a major major major issue with his progress as a superstar.

His been in the league 8 years. He's had more than enough time to see rick barry if he were serious about it.

Just accept it's a lost cause and hope that his positives can mask it.

This...

Teaching him to shoot underhanded will not suddenly transform him into a 90% FT shooter... Not only he is mentally weak at the line, he lacks the soft touch...

no player is perfect, anyone :man6: over his FT should've known better, this was his biggest downside as a player we saw it 1st hand how his FT could cost his team big games (09 finals).....so just live it.

Hey, if hypnotist can help people quit smoking, maybe it can help him shoot FT's like he does in practice.

My bad, you are correct. Still, if the leading free throw shooter in NBA history did it that way it couldn't hurt to try it.

Wilt Chamberlain was set up with one. The hypnotist ended up with a better percentage. :man10:
