Los Angeles Lakers big man Jordan Hill has just been charged with felony assault for allegedly choking a family member during an altercation in Texas earlier this year ... TMZ has learned.

The charge was filed by the Harris County District Attorney in Houston. It's unclear who Hill is accused of attacking.

The alleged incident took place on February 29. If convicted, Hill faces up to 10 years in prison.

24-year-old Hill was recently traded to the Lakers from Houston in exchange for Derek Fisher ... and has become a key member of the team.

Multiple attempts to reach a rep for Hill were unsuccessful.

He should be able to make bail, and come back....these things take time to go to trial.

But yes, the timing is awesome, I wouldn't be surprised if they sat on the charge for a while.

I'm guessing his family members were trying to extort cash from him and he wasn't interested in playing ball.

$$$...... and Lakers resonates a lot better than "Rockets".

Sounds to me like a family member didn't get the "loan" they wanted and is going about it in another way......

Rockets probably knew about this as it happened when he played for them, and may not have informed the Lakers. Or did the Lakers know...and not care?

Interesting.

Again, he is not "done for the season". He needs to arrange to turn himself in, he'll be granted bail, and there will be a trial in 4-6 months.

Ohh if someone committed a felony and I was on the receiving end of it, I would not wait two months to be like ohh someone just assaulted me and it's on a felony level. This seems fishy as hell.
