Bigs are overpaid in general so you're correct. but that doesn't change the fact that he's overpaid.

He's primarily a rebounder, and undersized for a PF which means he'll struggle defending taller PF/C's like Cousins, and since his points generally come off offensive putbacks and offense created by playmakers near the hoop, so we can't depend on him to create on his own. He's very good at the skills he can do (rebounding) but his skillsets in general are shallow and need to expand.

Well, I guess it depends on one's definition of overpaid. Isn't overpaying when you spend more than what a fair market would command for a given commodity? Doesn't the market HAVE to determine the price? I'm not an economics guy, but, I'm thinking this is a typical supply/demand issue. If the market (other teams) is willing to pay $5M per year for a player of his talents, than $4M per year can't be overpaying by any reasonable definition.

On the other hand, I guess one could argue the market is out of whack and maybe that's what you mean. For instance, the real estate market in 2005 where, market price for a 2 bedroom condo might have been $600K and if you paid that, you may have paid market price but looking back that is vastly overpaying. But then again, in this case, we don't have the benefit of hindsight so all we know is, did we pay more than others would pay for a player of his talent level and I'd say probably not.

BTW, I agree with your overall assessment of Jordan Hill's skill set and contributions but isn't that why he is going to make substantially below average in compensation?

BTW, I hate to even bring this up...but does anyone think this signing is ANY indication of the Lakers' intended direction as it pertains to D12?

I'm thinking, well, you make this move if you plan to give Hill minutes and you could do that by reducing Bynum and Gasol's minutes. Bynum shouldn't be playing 36 mins per game. D12 though, probabyl could and probably should.

A part of me thinks that if you're going to bring D12 here, then why would you pay any backup big $4M per year? Hmm, I dunno.

You telling me that Brown had any sense at all to his rotations and sitting players for long periods and what he expected out of them for them to get some kind of consistent playing time? Brown is the antithesis of Phil Jackson in that regard. He may still eff everything up this season in that regard as well if the F.O. doesn't keep an eye on him. That's the big elephant in the room now that Nash and Kobe will be running the offense. McRoberts knew he wasn't needed on this team last year to score and that he was on the screwiest of short leashes. Whatever. But he sure as hell is no scrub talent wise.

@ Hill being overpaid... In other news a stiff like Asik got 8 mil...

If the last move to make for the bench was signing a combo guard like Delonte West, I could live with no more moves to strengthen the bench.

Kobe (34) / West (6) / DJO (8)

I could dig that backcourt......let Blake rot and used in emergency situations. Use Ebanks / Kobe / Jamison at the backup 3 by committee. I think that would be pretty solid.

It's not even close to overpaying.. Glad to see McRoberts will likely be the one on the way out.. Jordan deserves that money much more.. Especially with Jamison at PF & McRoberts unable to play C

YES! $8 seems like a lot but then again he was a huge boost off our terrible bench. Glad we have a guy who can backup both Pau and Drew. Really stepped up in the playoffs and I hope he gets better. Him and Jaminson in the front court for Pau & Drew will be nice.

I'm curious how much better he'll look if he's on the floor with Nash ...

Don't forget he can pick & pop as well.

I get what you are saying but during that stretch with us he really didn't do anything that I thought would be hard to sustain..
It wasn't as if he was shooting lights out or something, basically all he gave us was hustle & intensity (which we desperately needed from at least one big). IMO that shouldn't be hard to sustain, I don't see a reason why he wouldn't keep playing that way, he knows that's what he's here for.
If anything, a full training camp + a defined rotation & role should benefit him and make him even more consistent..

Contract year would be the concern. I personally think the guy's legit, but there's a chance he was hustling for a payday.

If we get the effort he gave during that 20 game stretch and most of the playoffs it's a great deal..... That much is a fact. I don't know why he couldn't break through on either NY or Houston.... either he didn't get a chance or there was something else afoot.... Like I said above.... I hope the second year is a team option just in case it was a payday playday.....

But you have to think how much time will he really be on the floor with Nash?? When Jordan Hill is in the game Nash will more than likely be resting.

Great news! Hill will be a great fit in Nash's offense. If we can somehow steal Brandon Rush then I think we have to be the favorite.

I wish we could clone Nash so that we COULD have him on the floor for all 48.

What I'd really like to see is Nash in while Kobe is out and visa versa. This let's Kobe do his ball dominant thing for stretches or fill the playmaker role as needed. Nash gets to do his ball dominant thing and make everyone else look good. Nash, along with Jamison, can keep the second unit good enough to compete with the starters of all but the top tier teams in the league, allowing our other starters to get rest without worrying about games slipping away from us.

Regarding his legal troubles, when is he being tried for it? And if he's convicted what will that mean?

I heard he turned down 3/15 from Minny to come back and be a Laker. That's the type of player we need here!
