Magic not the most athletic nor best defender but he had the skills, the smarts at the top of the league's smart curve and the balls to deliver in prime time. Maybe that would be less physically demanding. It WILL be fun to see what he has done with his game / physical preparation. And yeah they have to bring him back at Staples. He will literally feel the adrenaline in that crowd course through him. One of the epic moments in sports history.

:jam2: Yeah I was thinking he'd have to change his role a little, maybe bulk up a little and play SF more depending on the match-up.

At least he is coming to terms with not being able to do some of the things he used to, unlike Nash who thinks he's 27 forever.

Kobe will find a way to win games but I really don't want to see him have to put up with double teams the entire game.. this team blows so bad it has no reliable scoring options. There's no reason he won't be doubled when he comes back.. pretty sad the Lakers dump almost 30 mill on two has beens and Kobe has to rejoin a team full of noobs and wingers.

Not dumping Pau for multi-players and signing Nash for multiple seasons really ruins the end of a great career for Kobe.

Great enthusiasm but you might want to not only review Kobe's injury but also his age. He will never be the "Old Kobe" again..... He wasn't last year if you remember correctly. He was efficient on the offensive end but was basically non-existent defensively.

I expect him to return to being able to score 22 + points a game and showing flashes of the 2010 Kobe but age is age and injuries are injuries and milage is milage. He's got the mentality like no one I've ever seen but the body will eventually let him down.

I'm also glad that you feel the need to want everyone proved wrong..... nice to know where we stand.

of course, the old Kobe is and has been long gone way before the achilles injury happened. Of course there were bits and pieces of the old Kobe last year with his athletic plays, but the way he plays the game nowadays is so much smarter and measured. Even when he comes back I believe the posting up will happen more and more. I can even see Kobe working more on his catch and shooting instead of doing a lot of things off the dribble.

My whole premise in what I wrote above is that its silly to believe that Kobe will be quite limited when he himself thinks he's be just fine.

According to Shaw, the fact Kobe is still sidelined with his Achilles injury shows that he has begun to think of his body in more mortal terms.

I am sure there is a lot of truth to this. This isn't to say Kobe won't come back and play great, but Kobe is a lot more conscious of what could happen as far as injuries occuring and more damaging how they can linger more so when you get older (i.e. Nash's Back, nerves in hamstring from broken leg)

Kob needs to chill out and get right before returning to the mess that is the Lakers. He's a title go-getter and he only knows that speed.

Come back to a title contending team....till then, don't rush back and get right. Its not like he'll be D-Rosing it. The Bulls were a title contending team and their leader still sat out. Kobe wouldn't do that and shouldn't do that...but with this team, no need to rush back.

^The competitor in Kobe won't view it that way, IMO. He'll be more patient with this injury, but as soon as he feels his body ready, he'll come back...December, January, or whenever that occurs. I actually think he needs to come back even if it's later in the year; he needs to test that Achilles and get use to playing on it and develop that trust that his body is indeed healthy and intact.

Kobe's only shot at another title won't be for 2 years if ever..... he needs to do what ever he can to be effective at age 40 if he want's number 6. This year is lost as is next. No matter who we get next year you don't just throw a team together and win a chip.... Miami is proof of that and there is no way in the world we're putting together a team like that in the offseason. It will be at least two years off.

His type of injury is career threatening.... just a fact. Do I think he'll come back? Yeah I do. How long I'm not sure however.

Question for anyone that happens to have a link or article.

I remember hearing something like Kobe is the number one SG in the league in some form of measuring assists over the last X number of years. I can see that he's averaged more than any other SG over the past 6 years.

But I found this quote from a recent article:

At 34 years old, Kobe ranked first in scoring, assists, rebounds, and double doubles amongst all shooting guards in the league

LINK

But I can't figure out the source of that declaration. Checked 82games, but couldn't find anything like this. Anyone know?

Not sure if this will help, but I found this page that allows you to compare certain players. I happened to be comparing MJ vs. MJ, but maybe you can see how Kobe stacks up with certain talent as far as assists.

Quote from Kobe's Foreward in Pau's New Book.
“If I could choose my brother today, he would possess qualities that would make him a great leader: calm in the face of a storm; controlled in the throes of confusion. He would be level-headed in his actions and understanding in his judgment. Like me, he would play in the NBA.

“If his organization ever let him down, he would hold his head up high. He would come to work every day, and continue to put in his best effort. He would not lash out or let himself become entangled in drama. He would not let it change him.”

“Our bond would be fortified by a trust only brothers share.”

“I would be proud of my brother; I’d tell him to write a great book. And I would be honored to write the foreward.”

Yes.... but a far different CBA and they had tradable assets that someone wanted. We will have some cap space in a far different environment. They got two HOF players in one offseason. I'm not sure we can even get one the offseason unless there is some real magic left in that wand.

Mild Kobe progress. Is he still shooting "tippy-toe" set shots? D'Antoni: "Tippy-toe? That's cute. Maybe a little bit more than tippy-toe."

Mike Bresnahan ‏@Mike_Bresnahan 4h
Graduation from tippy-toe shots or not, Kobe still hasn't been cleared to practice and there isn't a timetable for his return.

Still awhile away looks like...no rush, though. Take your time, Kobe.

the team is playing well and have been competetive so Kobe does not need to rush back at all. We only have 2 less wins than the 2nd place team in the conference. We sitting at 10th.

Kobe Bryant (Achilles) said on NBATV that if Friday's game were a playoff game that he would play.
This comes on the heels of Mike D'Antoni saying it would be tough for Kobe to return by Thanksgiving, and to make matters even more confusing Kobe took the court in warmups to present a $150,000 check for relief in the Phillipines. We tend to put more stock in the earlier report, but with Kobe anything is possible so we'll all just watch and wait.

also that piece that kobe wrote for pau's book was really great. he loves pau. (if only pau were as good on the court as he used to be)

Even with a loosing record our team is fun to watch. But some very effective players like Meeks, Young even Henry or Blake are getting playing time because of Kobe's injury. Do you think our record would be better with Kobe ?

I don't see Kobe making the difference alone. We need Pau playing at another level.
