Kobe shot chart from NBA.com

Postby worldjunction on Sat Jan 02, 2010 4:41 pm

Hi All. I've been trying to find that shot chart function they have on NBA.com (I think) where we can see the shooting percentages from different parts of the floor. I just can't seem to find it. I think it would be interesting to see. I appeciate the help.

Slava laughed at the suggestion his skills might be affected by the down time. "Are you kidding?" he said. "Basketball is like ball. It's all a circle."

It's just ridiculous. Look how balanced it is from left to right.

Kobe shoots more threes from his worst spot on the floor. If he could get the long range two from the left side up a bit and cut down the threes from his cold spot he would have a perfectly balanced shot chart. From straight on Kobe is money. Lebron has an awful amount of cold spots inside of the 3pt line. As many have pointed out his midrange game isn't good. I also see him really good from one spot on the floor from 3pt otherwise he is average 3pt shooter. More than anything the defenses are letting Lebron shoot from the perimeter and he is generally 3pt or dunk guy. His midrange game still isn't all that. Let Lebron get to the hoop and he is almost automatic.

Lamar's is bad. Almost no midrange game at all and in fact very few attempts. Lamar's shot chart tells me he is afraid to shoot.

which proves that people shouldn't use shot charts to base their opinions on

Well, well look what we have here. I'd expect since some writers are so hell bent on statistics to prove or disapprove certain things when it comes to the Lakers, you wonder why they never refer to the one's often I'm assuming, intentionally overlooked lol.

What I love is that if you look at that chart, you think, "I should make James shoot from the right. Force him to his right all the time." If you look at Kobe's, you think, "Wow...he really doesn't have any weaknesses." Then he does what he wants to you.

Now, when you look at Nash's you weep (but still force him left).

Kobe could get a higher percentage under the basket if he could simply get the call !!

A few years back, I did a piece on how to play against Nash. I think we lost the series, but my point remains true: the best way to play Nash 1 on 1 is to attack him when you have the ball and make him a scorer. He's a great shooter, but not a great scorer.

The best way for the Lakers to play Nash is to have Kobe play him. With Artest on the team, we probably could have Kobe cover Nash and not have to worry too much about other matchups, at least defensively.

Well, If he shot a lot more you can bet his percentages would not be quite as good. A big part of being an excellent shooter statistically is that you are excellent at shot selection. Nash is also one of the most amazing passers we've ever seen, often times he puts himself in a position to make a really difficult shot, but an 'easy'(by his standards) pass. If he was more of a 'shoot first' player and actually took those shots, you can bet his % would suffer.

This is why people say that Nash is a shooter and not a scorer. He can hit a shot from anywhere on the court, but he can't hit a shot from any situation and furthermore, the way he plays the game, often puts himself in impossible shot situations for the express purposes of breaking down the defense and passing.

Allen is a very good standstill shooter. He can't create a shot worth a damn any more. That's why his career FG% is <45%.
