Wow, I'm glad Rambis is back already he's already talking sense and reality about 'Antoni's offense. :man10:

I'm hopeful as well. He's got a decent reputation as an assistant I guess.... however his message was totally lost as a head coach. He completely lost those team in Min and they were not playing anywhere near their potential.

I'm more interested in what we do with the personnel to rebuild... the odds that any of our coaching staff is still around when we're really ready again is 50-50 at best IMO.

This could be a problem, and it's one we all should have seen coming. Rambis is a sensible guy, with great NBA experience as a player and coach. He knows what it takes to win. I like Rambis in isolation, but I worry about how he and D'Antoni will mesh. Results on the team/locker room could be disastrous.

I don't think anything disastrous will come of the two of them. Basically Rambo's an assistant. D' Antoni's running his system. Rambo has to concentrate on defensive schemes. He's giving his opinion but it won't really matter to D' Antoni - that guy doesn't really take other opinions.

Anyone else find it odd that supposedly on his own Dan came up with the idea to bring in not one but two new assistants who have links to PJ's past? That he would do this on his own without maybe being "encouraged' by the F.O. to do so? Just wondering. I find it kind of odd.

^I think the suggestion to hire Rambis came from the FO once McMillan & Gentry took jobs elsewhere; those were two of MDA's choices before any rumblings of adding Rambis to his staff had surfaced. He needed a "defensive assistant" and this is where I think Mitch or Jim may have suggested for MDA to reach out to Rambis.

Either way, I think this situation will be fine. Rambis will add another perspective & its my hope install a defensive scheme that can get us back to a place of respectability on defense. MDA relented last year and adjusted his approach, and I believe he will do the same this year. He needs to win in order to keep his job, and I believe he will be more apt to take advice & be more flexible then he ever has been. He's on a very short leash. Just my $.002 cents...

^ True. Since any of the "MDA's people" didn't want to play for him, Mitch and Jim brought a Lakers guy :jam2:

I just don't see how Rambis and MDA could gel and help out each other, both guys personality seems doesn't mesh well and fit together to me.

They're setting up the return of Phil thru Rambis.... influence wise... And you know They're setting Pjax as bait next summer for Lebron or whomever

Yup.

I see the plan from the FO as this:
1. Use Rambis to influence D'antoni. If D'Antoni adjusts and grows, he will prove that he can coach the team. If not, he'll be outed and replaced by Rambis or the dark horse candidate: Madsen.
2. Bring in Phil Jackson in some official capacity. That could mean just as a consultant a la Jerry West up north or it could mean as a much headier role like VP to Jim Buss's Presidency.
3. Use the draw of Phil to bring in big name FAs like Carmelo and/or LeBron.

I'm not sure if it all works exactly as the Lakers intend, but I fully believe this is the plan right now. They're going to look to make a major splash next season and to do that you need to pull out all the stops.

Rambis was an assistant for a long time before getting his head coaching shot; he knows the assistant deal. He did well with the defensive schemes during his last stint with the team; am looking to see what he can do with this bunch. I'm not expecting a lot, but it'd be nice to be pleasantly surprised.

MDA's first choices in assistants: McMillan and Gentry were guys he had worked with before and had good working relationships with them. They took other positions, it happens.

I still don't see Jax returning to the coaching ranks, but VP under baseball cap boy with boy retreating to the executive suite like his dad could work.
I shall be telling this with a sigh

Isn't he supposed to worry about defense? Not sure why he's sticking his nose into something he has no business discussing

I understand turnovers can lead to poor floor balance and transition opportunities but he needs to worry about how to utilize the young mobile legs

So, you want him to ignore our weaknesses and just design for our strengths, Rock? Seems...ostrich-y. Or simply self-deceptive.

Actually, Rambis stated that D'Antoni wants all his assistants to contribute to all aspects of the team's coaching. Apparently Kurt is not strictly the defensive coach, but a general assistant. So, his comments are on point and well within his job parameters.

You can't simply focus on one without the other. What happens on offense will affect what he can do with this team defensively. This isn't football where a completely separate unit comes onto the floor to play D. Pushing the ball too much offensively will limit their abilities to get back defensive and will result in quicker fatigue and less efficient play.

Last I checked we were still starting Pau, Kobe, and Nash. Pau and Nash will not be able to defend their position and there is no one to cover for them. Kobe gambles too much by playing the passing lanes, doesn't respect no name players, and dares most the league to take open 3s; we don't know when he'll be 100% either. So it doesn't matter how quick any of those other legs are when you have these three starting and no one to cover any weaknesses this team has defensively. There is no rim protector or someone to check guys on the perimeter. The only person with a defensive reputation is Kobe and that's been undeserving for quite awhile now. With this team, you slow it down offensively (speaking about the first unit) and maximize the advantages you do have.

I've been waiting for this to be mentioned for some time now... D'Antoni has specifically mentioned that his assistants are sort of "general assistants" rather than having specific titles such as defensive coordinator and such. It can go both ways - more insight and input on addressing the team, but maybe too much deferral of responsibility.

Rambis is right. Although we signed some nice young role players our core is still very old with Kobe, Nash, and Pau.

I DO think the bench can run though. The bench is VERY well suited to D'Antoni's style actually.

Provided Kelly can run fast enough from the rim to the three point line, here's what I see off the bench at this point:
Farmar/Young or Blake/Johnson/Kelly/Kaman. Now the two inside guys aren't young or athletic enough to "run" but if you start the break with Farmar/Young or Blake/Johnson with Kelly trailing to his favorite three point spots, that's an effective fast breaking team right there. Kaman obviously brings up the rear/covers the other rim in case of emergency.

With the starters, not so much. With the starters I'd like to see Phoenix's offense from the 2010 season with both Kobe and Nash filling in the PG roles.
