Lakers draft blunder discussion : Patrick Beverly

Rockets backup PG.

Game 1: 27 minutes, 11 pts, 4 rebs, 4 assists 2/5 3s

Game 2 started today, 41 minutes 16 points, 12 rebs 6 assists. Held Westbrook to 10 for 26 shooting

Lakers had the pick that the Heat ultimately used to draft Beverley. In return, Lakers got cash...and the pick for Ater Majok. #whoops

https://twitter.com/brosales12/status/327213683119902721

Seriously, Beverley was going to be playing overseas as well so cost wasn't even a concern. Lakers just didn't care about the pick. #sigh

https://twitter.com/brosales12/status/327232293821349889

Again, Lakers originally drafted Patrick Beverley. Gave him away for some pocket cash and Ater Majok. Good lord.

He was a 2nd rounder in the 2009 NBA draft. The killer part? We gave the pick away with..

https://twitter.com/brosales12/status/327214221106491393

Especially since Beverley, Marcus Thornton, Chase Budinger, Danny Green, and Patty Mills were still on the board.

We've been desperate for an athletic backup PG who plays defense and SF for years...by giving away draft picks all those years are why we are where we are right now. Hope we learn from this moving forward

Well, to be fair, we wouldn't have developed him as a player at all...so...

why is it a blunder?
the money we got from the trade allowed us to pay for Odom, etc.
which helped us to win the chip the next year

And we gave away Toney Douglas for $2mil. Really selling picks to re sign players? What are we the bobcats?

if you want to be disappointed that the lakers haven't been able to unearth a contributor from the second round or undrafted ranks since turiaf, ok. but choosing this particular guy? he's not even that good. and he's not even the first throwaway guard to make jeremy lin look like the second best pg on the rockets this year. i actually don't like his game that much. he's not a real pg, and he's not much of a shooter. great motor, decent athlete, but he'll never be more than a backup--and i'm not sure he's that great of a backup.

And we gave away Toney Douglas for $2mil. Really selling picks to re sign players? What are we the bobcats?

irony alert: that's the other guy that outplayed lin this year!

i'd take blake over either guy.

This has nothing to do with Lin. We had a pick to address a need and we blew it...its worse considering the other players they passes up on as well

Hindsight's 20/20, other teams passes on him too, we didn't draft him for us so he probably wasn't on our radar and wouldn't have been developed, our draft crew (scouts?) seems to suck, etc, etc, etc.

Look at how the Spurs build their team without dumping cash all over the place. We gotta use analytics or whatever the hell the Spurs use to build a roster around our superstars.

You guys crack me up. Lakers won 5 titles in the last 16 years with free agents and trades. Only legit draft pick with no trade who became an all star was Andrew Bynum.

Spurs got Parker and Manu in a time where late round euros were almost guaranteed busts. They hit the jackpot at the right moment with those guys. But since, yah, they drafted well and have good role players but they havent won a titles in 6 years. So, what difference does it make.

In all honesty, losing in the first round or WCF is the same to me. And in my normal mood, losing in the finals is worse then losing in the first round. But thats just me.

I'm sure somewhere, in some fan forum, someone created a post about how their management blundered because they didn't get Earl Clark and the Lakers had the 'foresight' to.

If you're willing to suck, then you take on a bunch of prospects and occasionally one of them pans out. That is all.

wow i wonder what we would have though if we were told this back in 2009
:man10:

i'd rather take lousy high picks like sacre, majok, caracter, elonu, etc and win titles than always have lottery picks. the one time we did have a lottery pick, it was bynum and he panned out well. this is just ridiculous

I don't see the point to this thread. It's not like we knew how well he would play. If you go through the drafts & see all of the players many NBA teams passed by it looks dumb now but back then nobody knew. Just how right now we don't know who else is going to be good.

box of rocks
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

well to be fair, the Heat didn't keep him either so meh......and why bring up Douglas too, he was clearly NYK pick to begin with and he's been traded multiple times now.

Exactly. There is no point.

It wasn't a blunder. Darko Milicic ahead of Bosh, Wade and Melo is a blunder.
