Lakers fear Dwight Howard will do the Unthinkable

Lakers fear Dwight Howard will walk in the off season and do the "Unthinkable" and this is the reason why they wont trade Dwight Howard

http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketbal ... vrit=53295

The Lakers have five more weeks to make a trade. Pau Gasol is staying ... for now.

The Lakers are reluctant to deal him because of the unthinkable — Dwight Howard leaving several months later as a free agent. They don't want to go from two quality 7-footers to none.

"They're in a bind," said a person familiar with the situation.

The trade deadline is Feb. 21. Howard becomes a free agent July 1.
“If somebody had their life on the line, and they’ve got their options on who they want to save their life – tell me who you’re going to pick?” Bryant asked. “You’re going to look at the stats first?”

If we lose Dwight and keep Pau we still go from 2 quality 7 footers to none. Pau hasn't been a quality 7'footer since the 2011 regular season.

QFT. I hope that "the office" won't use Dwight as an excuse to keep Pau. Dude is one lucky bastard :man9:

if the lakers aren't at least privately confident that howard will stay, they need to move howard. i think he's planning on staying, and that other plans should be based on that idea. as long as you don't take on big salary in a pau trade, it would only be the end of the world for one year if dwight did do something crazy in FA.

i guess what i'm saying is that losing dwight in FA is catastrophic, whether pau is here or not. so don't let it affect your plans.

id be a lot more scared of being stuck with pau as our only big vs. getting what we can for him now.

This.

What are we going to do if D12 leaves?......

Re-up on Pau's contract? :man10:

We aren't in a bind, if D12 leaves he leaves, but Pau has to go.

im pretty sure if the FO knew that dwight wasn't staying, they'd trade him for sure

there's no way they'd trade dwight instead of pau at this point. im still waiting for the news that pau has been traded. idk why he's still on the lakers

This is exactly right...... and why I don't believe a word of this media diarrhea these days. It's all designed to attract eyeballs and clicks to the NBA Partner's media organizations. No "real" analyst would look at the situation that the Lakers are in with Pau and come to the conclusion that Pau is still a top quality 7 footer. What people remember and what's left are vastly different.

The Twits Tweeting will only get worse between now and the trade deadline.... when they can then move on to playoff seeding and eventually to the draft...... them to summer league..... on to training camp and then the cycle begins over again.... Keep the interest high with completely un-provable posts of vapor....

If Dwight leaves, so be it. I don't think we should desire anybody that doesn't want to be here and win championships. Throughout our history, we have always bounced back. Nevertheless, with that in mind, I don't want him to leave.

As for Pau, he's going to be moved. I think he'll be moved by the offseason. The last two games this team has looked better on both ends without Pau. Pau needs to go regardless...

^^this, but i wouldn't be hurt if Dwight left. I mean we took a gamble with him. He stated from the beginning he was seeking for a ring and didn't really want to join the Lakers to begin with.

This is exactly it. Pau used to be an elite big, and that ship sailed a long time ago. Add that fact to his pretty hefty salary and your list of suitors dwindles to a very small list of teams that are on the bubble looking to get a little better by trading young players for an established veteran or a team that has youth and is again willing to shed some youth in order to bring in a mentor for the remaining young players. Pau is never going to be an all star again, but he could still contribute to the few teams that fit those descriptions. Laker's brass is simply trying to maximize their leverage here nothing more nothing less. I think the more Easy C. continues to show out the more nails are driven into the coffin of Pau in LA.

Dwight: "Wilt Chamberlain wore a headband and scored a 100 points. I'm motivated by those people (pointing to Lakers retired jerseys)."

Dwight talking like this will eliminate any thought of him leaving L.A.
“If somebody had their life on the line, and they’ve got their options on who they want to save their life – tell me who you’re going to pick?” Bryant asked. “You’re going to look at the stats first?”

^^ I am absolutely in agreement with all of this.

I still feel the same way, I'd hold onto Pau until a great trade opportunity, most likely as an expiring. But if the right trade came around before the deadline, Clark's great play of late has definitely lessened my attachment to Pau being here.

Didn't Kobe tell Dwight sth like "When I retire LAL is yours?" I wouldn't reject that.

I dare him to leave and walk away from 30+ mil. Absolutely dare him. No professional athlete in his prime has ever done that. If he wants to force a sign and trade so he can get his money, that's fine too as long as we get back good pieces and get the better of the deal. If not, then forget it. Let him walk. This franchise is bigger than one player and we will recover in time. If this franchise is bigger than Kobe it's certainly bigger than Dwight.

Do the unthinkable ? I actually think that if the Lakers missed the playoffs this year there is a big chance that Dwight will leave us this summer, Dwight came here for the Championship right ? I don't think he could swallow his pride and signed a long-term contact with us after the epic failure and the biggest choke job in the team spot history disastrous season with the Lakers.

^ If Lakers management/ownership is smart they'll say in the most convincing manner to Dwight and his agent something to the effect of, "Every franchise has down years. What's the difference between the Lakers and everyone else - we bounce back faster and have less bad years. We stay relevant and acquire the best talent come hell or high water. You stay with us, you'll get your championship, your jersey retired, and your special place in history with one of the greatest American sports teams. You don't believe us? Do your homework - look at the history of the other 29 teams and look at ours."

Could not agree more!! The Lakers will go on with or without him. Hell when you think of it, we have no choice if he walks, then he does if he stays great!
