The Heat this season remind me of the Shaq-Kobe Lakers; a team that is unstoppable when motivated and destined to win multiple titles. They've been that dominant, as much as I don't want to admit it.

agreed, and in reality the lakers are the only team with potential to beat miami next season, this season we will be seeing the miami heat hoist the trophy again

depending on who the lakers get for pau gasol will determine if they can prevent the heat from a 3-peat

OKC is done, the minute they traded harden they threw away their title, the spurs are getting older and the clippers have a ticking time bomb in cp3 who is an injury risk every season.

so it's up to the lakers to get real value out of gasol, get more athletic or else miami will rip off a nice 3 peat before wade collapses

As history goes on nobody will care about that though, only the number of wins they end up with, and I have no issue with that, you can only play who you play, still have to win the games.

The league was separated back then. A lot of the best players in the world were actually playing in another league, the ABA.

Well there you have it, people can always overlook circumstances in every case, but a streak is a streak. Houston still has that 22 game win streak, one of the longest ever, to look back on and be respected, and I couldn't tell you a single team they beat off the top of my head, only the number of wins they had.

I do find it a little funny and not coincidental that you only bring that point up after LeBron himself brought it up though.

28 total teams out of only 215 Million people.... 30 teams now out of 320 Million people.... twice as many college teams now as then developing players as well. Add in the European Players and there is about 600 Million in population in basketball playing countries compared to a pool of about 215 million in 72'

About the only difference in the quality has to do with the admission of High School players and the diminishing fundamentals overall in the NBA. The average player in the 70's had 3+ years of college experience under their belt.

The argument that today's game is somehow watered down compared to the 70's isn't really valid.

/\ Which is not to mention the D-league or burgeoning international scene as well. Ironically, international players in the NBA today tend to be the most fundamentally strong and it stands out specifically because of how many guys play 'stylistically'* these days versus the 'import' players who might come from a random impoverished, developing or otherwise severely lacking in basketball area need to develop strong fundamentals to even have the slightest chance at being noticed.

The International scene has brought more talent into the league, specifically more talented big men(seems like almost every team has a decent international big these days, maybe the US height average is shorter than we think) but it is also a weird thing to see hot shot superstar point guards come into the league at 18 or so and 'have to work on their jumper' when so many international players, even the ones we give a lot of [Swearing is not permitted at Clublakers. You must edit this post prior to submitting.] to are automatic from ~15 feet(and at the very least completely mechanically sound)

*I say stylistically in that I'd suspect most players in the NBA are perfectly *aware* of fundamentals it's just, they have more of a 'rock god' mentality where they can't be bothered to actually practice their rudiments and technique and are more interested in complicated tapping arpeggios and shredding solos, which can and will be very effective for what it is, just... you know.

I would argue that the talent is similar in both eras. That's not the issue as I see it.

The issue this year is the new CBA. It has prevented good teams from becoming great, so there is no team that can challenge Miami in the regular season. The Lakers have the talent, but alas our luck has run out, with a terrible VP of basketball operations that has a) hired one moron coach after another, and b) has pulled an MIA for the second half of the season, when we really needed an extra body or two with all of the injuries. So our talented roster is being completely misutilized/underutilized this year, leaving us scratching and clawing our way into the 8th seed in the west.

The other issue this year is injuries, which are a product of the concentrated season last year. Lots of players went down during the shortened season last year, and some more this year, probably as a product of too many games without adequate training beforehand. The players really should have canned last season, and held out for a better CBA. Instead they got less money and more injuries.

Miami is a really loaded team, and really talented, without a doubt. But the streak is a bit easier because of the lack of great teams, and so many great players injured for a good chunk of the season. Great accomplishments are due to effort first, by talented players second, who have a little bit of luck third. And the circumstances this year, from the new CBA to the injuries epidemic, have put a little luck their way.

/\ Yeah, I think that sort of stuff is completely fair to take into account when discussing streaks. As I mentioned a little earlier in the thread. Streaks are impressive and they are fun but they are also anomalies for reasons that are completely unrelated to the actual talent or ability of the team in question. It takes more than a little luck and more than a little 'right place, right time' to go on a BIG streak, and while obviously when you're talking about history scraping territory in 27+ games that is special no matter how slice it, but just the same, the Houston Rockets in 2008 were by no stretch of the imagination one of the best teams ever assembled and yet there they sit with the third best streak of all time against an objectively stronger Western conference *and* Eastern Conference compared to today.

But yeah, at some point you just have to respect what the Heat are doing, it is special and all but it also sours that point about why the whole superfriends move was lame and the lasting effects it has had on the league overall. Lebron would be an infinitely more enjoyable player to watch if he actually had to try. As it sits, he is in a position where he can play most of any given game at whatever his comfort level is and 'step up' for the occasional spurt when his team needs a boost. That's something that, no matter how much I have grown to respect and even like his game over the years(and it's hard to hate it, he is an incredible player) will always be a thorn in my side about actually watching him play. We talk a lot about sometimes about "Old School" mentality and playing for the love of the game and playing with a chip on your shoulder without being stupid and having that competitive fire and where is any of that with Lebron since he moved to Miami? There was some token lip service about being the 'villain' but it very quickly dissolved into 'the league is beneath me', and it's like, sure dude, we'll just ignore the superteam then.

Oh well.

I could break off into some other rants about it and the direction the league has been headed, but whatever. These things ebb and flow and no small part of my distaste for how things have turned is likely a direct result of my personal biases for Los Angeles Lakers Basketball.

Damn no Tebow news and the Heat loss..........ESPN is actually going to have to show highlights of other games or go off air.

Nevermind they will just cover Teo's 40 time for 2 hours and that makes him a 1st round pick.

Thank you Bulls, our streak is safe for now. Makes you appreciate how truly long that streak is, a team has to fight almost every game the longer it goes.
